I hope the Kildare County Board have invested in a new fóclóir gaeilge so there's no repeat of the team-sheet debacle when these two counties met previously in the league!

END OF THE RAINBOW

Tuesday August 31 2010

Anthony Rainbow has called time on the longest existing career in inter-county Gaelic games. The Kildare football stalwart has let it be known to colleagues that he is bringing to an end a 20-year association with the county team.

Rainbow made his debut in the league in the autumn of 1990 and made his championship debut in 1992. He remained an integral part of Kieran McGeeney's panel over the last three seasons despite a dearth of game time.

Rainbow played in Kildare's last All-Ireland final appearance in 1998 and on his day was one of the game's most dashing wing-backs. He will be 39 in October, the oldest inter-county player this season. He may also be joined by his Suncroft club-mate Killian Brennan, who is also understood to be considering his future.

The focus will also be on Dermot Earley, who had his troubles with a serious knee injury for much of the summer and didn't feature on Sunday. Earley has been a member of the Kildare squad since 1997 and will be 34 next summer.

I've always had great time for Mickey Ned. Hopefully he won't be out of the game for long.

Ideal job for Dwyer now methinks - JP to seal the deal???

Heading up North again - hopefully we'll get a similar result to the one in Belfast.

Bad memories of Celtic Park from 2006 when we got a bit of a hiding.

I watched Leitrim against Roscommon and I thought they were the better team for much of that game but their heads seemed to drop after the Ros goal. They should be the fresher team coming into this and I'm sure Mickey Moran will have them primed to give Kildare a right good rattle next weekend. The Kildare players will know Michael Foley because of his involvement with Kilcock and we can't afford to give away cheap frees anywhere inside forty yards because he'll kick them all day long.

I suspect Kildare will go with the same team again. Hopefully they can replicate the intensity of last night's performance.

'There's no place for the Queen at Punchestown' - Kildare Sinn Fein

Published Date: 15 April 2010

By Lisa Deeney

It would be the end of Punchestown if the Queen was to visit, according to Kildare Sinn Fein Town Cllr Paddy Wright.
"There would be no relaxation at Punchestown. The security would be unbeliveable. The M15 and Irish security would take over. I do not see it as possible," he continued.

"Family, farming, racing and general people, it would be the end of their relaxation. They would be stopped and harassed for ID." Cllr Wright added that he has "nothing personal" against the queen or the Royal Family, but added, "her army is in our six counties don't forget."

Indeed the south Kildare Athy town councillor was involved in the protests against Princess Anne visiting Laois in the in early Sixties.

"We knocked trees everywhere in protest back then," he said. "This is not the Royal Ascot or Cheltenham, it's Punchestown. I could not support her precence over here. It's great to come as tourist but not as the head of the British State."

Cllr Wright was speaking following the news that Queen Elizabeth recently told Punchestown racing manager Dick O'Sullivan, via an aide, that she would love to attend next week's festival "but she can't because it clashes with her birthday".

However, offering an Irish solution to a peculiarly English problem, Mr O'Sullivan told the Leinster Leader this week that she should follow in the footsteps of her predecessor, Edward VIII, and attend the 11 Grade 1 race festival - and perhaps see her horse Barber Shop in the winners' enclosure.

Right lads and lasssies, here are the rules and regulations as we agreed on over on the Horse Racing thread a few weeks back:

-> Daily mythical bank of €100 to bet - so €400 over the four days

-> One selection per race - either win single or e/w (e/w = your stake X2, e.g. €10 e/w is €20 overall), no multiples, doubles, patents, lucky 15s etc.

-> Participants must select one horse in each race

-> Participants who exceed their €100 bank on an individual day are disqualified

-> Participants can only use their €100 bank on the one day - e.g. no carry over of €20 to Wednesday if you've only bet €80 on Tuesday

-> Only the official SP as published in the Racing Post will be used

-> Only the offiicial result will be used in the case of a stewards enquiry and ammended result - no double result as paid out by most bookmakers (Dead heat pays out half your stake)

-> Place terms: 1/4 the odds in all races - 4 places in races of 16 runners or more, 3 places in races with under 16 runners

-> Winner will be the person who generates the most € profit at the end of the four days - in the event that no one makes a profit, the person with the least loss over the four days will be deemed the winner.

Example of an entry for the Tuesday of last year's festival:

1:30 - Go Native €10 win
2:05 - Forpadydeplasterer €20 win
2:40 - Wichita Lineman €10 win
3:20 - Punjabi €5 e/w
4:00 - Garde Champetre €20 win
4:40 - Quevega €30 win

All selections before the off time of the first race each day please. Probably be Saturday or Sunday week before I have the results up given that'll I'll only be flying home late Friday night.

If anyone spots any issues or problems with the format then raise them before Monday.

GAA Discussion / Kildare v Down - 7 February
February 05, 2010, 03:17:04 PM
Kildare team according to KFM:

Shane McCormack

Aindriú MacLochlainn   Mick Foley   Emmet Bolton

Gary White   Brian Flanagan   Anthony Rainbow

Daryl Flynn   Dermot Earley

David Whyte   Pádraig O'Neill   Rob Kelly

James Kavanagh   Ronan Sweeney   Karl Ennis

Forward line looks ordinary enough without JD and Smith. Kavanagh's return is very welcome. Roli looked miles off the pace when he came on but I've always liked him as an orthodox full-forward. His height will be a threat especially with the new square ball rule.

Full-back issues remain. Good to see Chalky moved out where he'll be more comfortable but Foley is a natural half-back too and never looked convincing in at full-back last summer. McGrillen is on the bench and hopefully he'll get a go in the 3 shirt before the end of the NFL.

If Down are in good shape on Sunday they have a great chance of turning us over. I can't see that Kildare forward line racking up a big score and a lot of our backs have been prone to silly fouling recently.

GAA Discussion / Earley All-Star Double - a first?
November 15, 2009, 08:42:36 PM
Noelle Earley was picked on the Ladies Football All-Star team last night. Her brother Dermot was selected for the men's equivalent.

Is this a first? Amazing for a brother & sister to win All-Stars in the same year.

Looks like the end of the road for Quinny, Girve and Mal O'Kelly. Good to see the likes of Cronin and O'Brien involved. Unlike O'Sullivan, Kidney doesn't appear to have any hesitation about giving the younger unproven talent a chance.

How does Gavin Duffy keep getting called up to these squads though?

For those of us who prefer the quiet pint rather than the teeny boppers contributing to the nightclub thread!

Coffey's, Newbridge - perfect location for pre/post match pints.
An Goban Saor, Kildare Town - great place to watch the racing.
Kyteler's, Kilkenny - a hidden gem in the Marble City.
Mulligans, Poolbeg Street - the finest pint of plain in the world, Con Houlihan will vouch for that.
Dick Mack's, Dingle - an absolute haven of a place.
Foxy John's, Dingle - doubles up as a hardware shop during the day.
Foley's, Inch - if talk of turf drives you crazy and you can't face a bale of hay, make for Foley's, work the topshelf, talk pucks pints and the GAA.

Hurling Discussion / TG4 - Best Hurler: 1984-2009
September 28, 2009, 09:10:55 PM
http://www.tg4.com/bearla/clar/gaa125/hurl.asp

Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh and a panel of experts from The Star and TG4 have selected a shortlist of twenty five players who they consider to be the finest stars of the GAA in the last 25 years. Now we need your votes to decide who will be crowned the best footballer and hurler of the last 25 years, and who will be honoured during the 125 celebration game in Thurles on 1st November.

DJ ahead of Whelahan, Shefflin and Nicky English for me.
