"Highly unlikely Gleeson would go from managing a Liam McCarthy County to one who isn't"

This was your original point.
The one that I challenged.
You don't like being challenged.

The above statement would indicate one of two things

1. Antrim are much superior to Laois
Or
2. Gleeson has prospects of job offers from Liam McCarthy teams.

Nobody needed you to point out that Antrim (and all Northern teams in their chosen code) are very well supported financially.
Likewise, the playing numbers for historical and cultural reasons are very very high.

Antrim are no better or worse than Laois.
Moving from Antrim to Laois or vice versa is very much a sideward move.

To the best of my knowledge, these are the last 5 games between the two.

2023 NHL Antrim +6 points
2022 NHL Laois +1 point
2021 Leinster Laois +6 points
2021 NHL Antrim +2 points
2019 Joe Mc Laois +8 points

Of course the playing population and the prospects of Casement Park are huge positives for them.
Unless Gleeson expected to be there for another 20 years it was never going to matter to him.

So again, based on their respective ability, results and prospects for success, Antrim to Laois would be as clear an example of a sideways move as you'll find.

Everybody would like a high quality manager from within Laois.
If one of the few of those don't want the job, a poor quality manager from within Laois shouldn't get the job BECAUSE they are from Laois.

You might not be around for long, but Laois have had an All Ireland winning manager in both codes in the past.

Another Essay

I don't anyone including myself ever said that in relation to appointing a Laois manager

Verbal

Can't wait to see Laois competing in the Leinster and All Ireland Championship in 2025 with an All Ireland Winning Manger who's costing the guts of €1m over his 3 year term  ;D

Verbal

Ah but you see , by your own reckoning they should reduce the Leinster and All Ireland championship to about 6 teams and cut Antrim out of it?
I assume your logic for the Laois championship applies universally?

If so, I'd edit out the word "competing" from your post!

Enjoy!

Quote from: Verbal on August 16, 2024, 03:16:57 PMDo you reckon Darren  Gleeson is currently being considered by any county ranked higher than Laois?

It's a fairly well known fact that Davy attracts a certain level of commercial interest.
Antrim is a far more commercialized area than Laois.

Recruit internally- so just go with anyone inside who will take it ?
Flawed logic.
Cork, Kilkenny, Tipp and Galway are not successful because they appoint internally.

I would prefer a small number of Laois men.
If none of them want it, we have to go outside.

And Antrim are welcome to D Fitzgerald!

There's only ever been one external All Ireland winning hurling manager

Diarmuid Healy, Michael Bond and Eamon Cregan are three for starters.

Darren Gleeson is the new senior hurling manager hope he gets a good back room team in with him.

imtommygunn

He's a very good appointment. Did a great job with us.

Certainly doesn't show a huge amount of imagination, and he wouldn't be my first choice, either. However, he does have a decent track record with Antrim, and the appointment is in place early. Something tells me he may have more difficulty here than he had there, but hopefully my cynicism is misplaced, and he gets all the support he wants.

Yes, would love to know who else they spoke to.
