I've heard it said the brother of...

... ... ... and a long time Fianna Fáil county councilor. The identity of the man is key as it's alleged he used his political position and authority to block the investigation. The name has been in the public domain for a long time and a senior Fianna Fáil official confirmed he is still a member of the Party.

General discussion / MOOCing
September 18, 2013, 11:04:27 AM
Not sure if anyone is interested in or has taken some of these. For those who don't know MOOCs are Massive Open Online Courses - essentially HE distance learning courses that can be taken for free. Currently the leading provider of these is a company called Coursera https://www.coursera.org/ though there are a few other smaller and start-up currently on the go.

I've a vested interest in that I currently doing work for Queen's in Belfast and a new company called FutureLearn which is today launching the platform and course programme.
If you get a chance give us a wee like on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/QubMoocs) or Google+ (https://plus.google.com/u/0/104920601012127493681).
Sign-up for new courses on the FutureLearn website: www.futurelearn.com

Having gotten the shameless plug out of the way has anyone any thoughts on the Mooc stuff?

Can anyone give me some advice on this. I'm getting an increasing amount of freelance work from Dublin while living in Belfast. Currently I'm sending invoices to pay cash into the wife's old southern account (in her maiden name). This is grand up to a point but now the work has become regular what are the risks and implications? I also have a fulltime job in the north where I pay tax and national insurance.

GAA Discussion / Grimley wields the axe (apparently)
October 24, 2012, 11:32:34 AM
Not sure what to make of this. Grimley trying to stamp his authority early on? Can't see what Mackin did to get dropped as he was one of the few stand-out performers in the league last year. Also us Grimley expecting any Cross involvement in the club championship to end before the league restarts?

Grimley drops 14 players from 2012 Armagh squad

New Armagh football manager Paul Grimley has swept the decks following a clear-out of 14 players from the 2012 squad over the past few weeks.

Among them is Andy Mallon, the former All Star corner-back who has been involved with the county since 2003, when he played in the All-Ireland final against Tyrone.

Billy Joe Padden, who linked up with Armagh after years with Mayo, has also been released, as have long-serving players Malachy Mackin, Michael O'Rourke and Anton Duffy.

Grimley said it was necessary to make such sweeping changes because Armagh have been "drifting for too long". "Change is needed," he said.

Grimley has introduced 12 newcomers, including two of the Crossmaglen Rangers All-Ireland club championship-winning side, Paul McKeown and Stephen Finnegan.

It brings to seven the number of Crossmaglen players that are now in the Armagh squad, with Jamie Clarke, Aaron and Tony Kernan, James Morgan and Johnny Hanratty all still involved.

Oisin McConville was critical recently of the low number of Crossmaglen players that had made the Armagh team in recent years.

The promising Rory Grugan is also off the panel but is set to travel in the coming weeks.

Grimley said he has spoken to all the players released and explained the reasons behind his decision.

"Some of the lads gone have been injured in recent seasons, others have lost form," he said. "In Andy Mallon's case, he's living in Dublin now, has a young family and he's a player we will probably revisit in February or March."

He warned that further changes can't be ruled out once the new season gets under way.

"I'll be willing to cut some of the younger players some slack. It will take time to blood some of them. But the older players won't have the same time," he said. "They need to step up."

General discussion / Dental Tourism

Anyone tried going abroad for dental work? Getting quoted over £3k here for an implant (complicated because it needs to go near my sinus) but this place in Bratislava (http://www.dentalholiday.co.uk/) will do the same job for £900. Have Googled them and they seem to be a top class outfit with no complaints on any of the review sites I read but there's always that niggling doubt that your going to end up in a chair with this boy:

General discussion / TV Series Thread
September 01, 2011, 11:08:56 PM
Seemed to have disappeared while I was posting. Anyway, my reply was:

My summer viewing was the first 3 seasons of Breaking Bad and first 7 episodes of season 4. Pretty good, great script and characters. Watched the first season of Game of Thrones as well. Put it off for a while as I didn't think the whole fantasy thing was my cup of tea but was hooked by the third episode. As discussed here before, season 1 of Boardwalk Empire is also very good - think Sopranos set in the 20s.

All available for download on the torrents.

Bertie is going to spontaneously combust soon if people don't start acknowledging he was the bestist leader ever and had nothing to do with Irelands decline to status of economic basket case.

General discussion / For Peace Sake. Join the UDR/UVF
August 03, 2011, 11:26:26 AM
Startling evidence as to the extent of the collusion that existed between the British militias in Ireland and the murder gangs has emerged over on the Detail. Among the revelations:

  • 70 members of one UDR unit were linked to the UVF in west Belfast, including one of the Shankill Butchers
  • UVF members regularly socialised at the UDR's Girdwood barracks social club
  • One UDR unit siphoned-off £47,000 to the UVF
  • An investigation into collusion was suspended on the excuse that it was damaging morale within the UDR.

General discussion / Picture Framing/Display Case
May 28, 2011, 01:28:05 AM
Could anyone recommend a good picture framer or joiner who could manufacture a shadow box display to a bespoke design? Have already asked the picture framer we usually use and he only does the standard (flat) picture framing. What I'm looking for is more of a display case with pictures enclosed within along with incriptions.

General discussion / Networked media players
February 04, 2011, 01:09:28 PM
Lads I'm looking a media player for the kitchen with the following features.

Can play music directly from my networked media server. Wired and wireless.
Can play CD's - the wife likes play CDs rather than dick around with my geek stuff.
At least an FM radio, ideally with LW & MW.
Can play internet radio stations and maybe DAB.

Spotted something a few months back which fitted for around £140 but can't find it again. Anyone have any suggestions?

Anyone listening to that chav 'Crystal' from Portadown at the moment? She says her five year old has moved out because he doesn't want to live in her two bedroom house. "When other people with one child have a f**king three bedroom house". Greedy selfish whore should have the children taken off her.  >:(

Bit of a long shot but anyway. I spotted a place a few years back Co Cavan, I think somewhere around Butlersbridge, a mile or two anyway from any town or village. It looked like a scrap yard from the road - a house with the side field full of old fireplace surrounds and stuff. Have tried Googling a few things there can can't anything. Ring a bell with anyone?
