Similiar thing happened to me. Some program hacked in and sent one of those apple e-mails to all my contacts. Just had to change my password which seemed to work. This is all coming from the user details that were stolen a couple of months back. Makes u think about the whole on-line banking thing.

Exact same thing happened to me nine months ago and all my contacts got emails saying I'd lost my handbag in Ghana or somewhere and could they forward me some money ... I WANT TO MAKE IT ABSOLUTELY CLEAR THAT I HAVE NEVER OWNED A HANDBAG!!!  Contacted hotmail but they were as useful as a chocolate teapot

Why dont you just type in the middle name of your child and re-set the password?

I googled it, as I hope u did too and not just rely on the wisdom of this place ;D. It seems a mixed bag, some said windows live support team were great and sent back an email detailing steps to be taken to regain access to said account and sorted it out while others said they were useless. It sounds a bit hit and miss but in all reality they seem ur only hope.

I used hotmail for about the same amount of time, and in the summer I decided at the suggestion of a friend to switch to Gmail.

I think it is a much better service and I cannot remember the last time I logged onto hotmail.

Its a pain in the ass to change everything, but so far a much much better email account for me.

The spam emails originate from a keylogger virus spread through Microsoft Messenger. You could have it and not know it, so you should change your password regularly. I doubt though thats what has caused TG's problem.

Sounds to me like someone has hacked her account - this is easy enough to do if you know someones personal details (date of birth, where they were born, mothers maiden name etc). So that would suggest that whoever has done it is well known to her i.e. the people behind the spam emails have no need to change passwords and secret questions as they can access the account without them.

It's only when you don't know the account's password that you go though the secret questions proceedure and then you have to reset the password. As the original password is not known you have to change it to something else which alerts the account holder - and they get locked out.

All web based email have the same vulnerabilities you just need to be a bit more security conscious about how you use them.

But there is no way anyone would have known the answer to the secret question i had to be able to reset it . No way, it has to be a virus - and with the messages going from my email all week saying i was selling ipods confirms this. Contacted microsoft yesterday evening - filled in the online security to validate the account is mine but no response yet

Thats what im sort of panicking about is my paypal. I cant remember my password for it and not sure what to do now to make sure it isnt used. Did u just send that form to windows support with the different details about your account? How quickly are we talking? Its annoying my head big time - gonna have to go to bank this morning and clear every penny out just in case

Hotmail support sent me this form:

https://support.live.com/eform.aspx?productKey=wlidvalidation&ct=eformcs&scrx=1

Provide them with information to prove ownership of the account.

I got a text message then an email from supposedly a mate offering ipods etc about 6 weeks ago.  I knew it wasn't him then got confirmation by a phone call.

Anyone doing internet banking using an unsecure site is asking for trouble.  Likewise, using an iphone/any phone to do wireless internet banking is leaving themselves open to attack.  I never use my phone to go near my banking stuff.

Folks check out Conficker on google.  Banks only let us know about the very minimum of attacks due to their not wanting the bad publicity of insecure sites and the follow-on increase in  customers using banks, therefore needing more staff and reducing the cost-cutting effectiveness of online banking.  The fcukers are robbed half enough if you ask me.

Define what you call an unsecure site? Surely anyone using an unsecure host is what you mean?

Renew.  Especially at work.  Maybe work will pay for it and you can piggyback and get protection at home.

I think it was about a week - maybe less - I emailed them to chase it up. There was money transferrred form my paypal - but paypal spotted the transaction and restricted my account.
