I would have thought it had to opposite effect as I was of the understanding the two bodies were traveling in opposite direction when they hit (I have on seen a 3d rendering of the accident).  Assuming of course it was a straight on collision. Also that calculation isnt for the force of the impact just the kinetic energy of the spring at point mass hit it

I read the spring was supposed to be traveling at 160 mph. Ignoring the fact Massa was traveling in the opposite direction, the kinetic energy of the spring would have been in or around 2000 kg per metre squared per second squared (1/2 mass x the velocity squared or 1/2 * 0.8 x ([160*1.6*1000]/60/60)^2 which I believe from memory is a Joule.  Therefore the kinetic energy of the spring at the point of impact was approximately 2000 joules.  Thats I believe about 4 times a 9mm bullet at point blank range.  He is lucky to survive and thats with out even considering the relative force of the crash and the momentum.

Please note I havent done any physics in about 3 years and am open to correction on this.

He named a 'fake team' shall we say for the paper on the Thursday before the Monaghan game and we would have all thought that was the team for the game had the actual team not been posted on this board on the previous Wednesday night.

Obviously there was a leak from within the team which was clearly undermining McDonnell. This leak was outed momentarily on Orchard County.

Nothing to do with the Armagh situation, but what is this obsession wiith managers naming dud teams on a Thursday and then think they are pulling a fast one by naming a different starting team. International rugby have a process of naming their teams in mid week and to it religiously unless there is an injury. Either stop this ridiculous process of naming teams in the press midweek or introduce a rule stating that the team named has to be genuine. After all, it us the paying public that are having to swallow this load of crap that they dish out to us.

Worryingly I am a little more qualified than that.  I should have realised a long time ago to stop trying to second guess juries.  Well fair play to the defence team they must have been able to show that immediate fear of violence was there and/or that little weight could be placed on the cctv footage.

The problem with a self defence argument is that to relay on it Gerrard has to show an immediate fear of violence. That's very hard to prove when the guy appears to be doubled over before Gerrard appears to punch him. Hard to establish an immediate fear at the point especially if your in a group of mates

It's a bit early to say a lot will depend on factors such as previous record, liklihood to reoffend etc.  Here we have pre sentence reports which really dictate the sentence. They aren't as a common in England. My gut feeling is either a short custodial sentence or a suspended sentence

I'd be surprised at that the legislation seams to suggest that on a contest the minimum sentence is custodial. The other thing is if Gerard is convicted of affray then he is as guilty of the elbow as the man who through it.

The thing about the affray charge is if the prosecution can show that Gerard used or threatened to use any unlawful violence which would make any normal person fear for their safety then he is guilty of affray.  The problem though is if that if even a single punch being thrown by Gerrard  (not in self defence) can be proven then the actions of all the others in the fight are considered in other words, if Gerrard has even a tiny role in the actual violence, it wont matter, as the jury will have to consider whether or not the actions of all the fighters were such as to make a normal person fear for their safety.

Now given that Gerard apparently admitted at interview that he threw at least one connecting punch then his defence is likely to be one of the following.  Either a it was self defence or b the incident would not have made any normal person fear for their safety.  Id imagine its more likely to be a.  Jury trials are strange things so its hard to know how this one will go

Does ss3 not come as standard when you get either ss1 or ss2?  I have the whole package as the sports are the only thing I watch and find it great.  Although I dont get Sky Sports News which I would watch most often and have to switch to freeview (although I believe that SSN becomes part of the package next month)

I would assume this case is going to be based on a lot more than cctv footage so it will be impossible to tell the result until the jury decides

I would like to see McAlinden given the job again.  I dont think we have the squad to be challenging immediately but we do have a very young team and if they could be brought on properly then 2-3 years down the line I could see us in the top 4-6 teams in the country again.  McAlinden has proven in the past he can build teams like that
