Why only in Ireland?

Hi,

I know nothing of your sport! number 1

But it looks to me to be amazing, so I am wondering why this has never taken off in Scotland, England and Wales?

Any theories on this?

I was told that the USA has embraced your sport? It seems really odd to me that for example the Scots would not also play?

Because its amateur and so limited opportunity to make money out if it. Plus we dont really try and promote it properly abroad.

To me as an outsider it really is surprising, just back from speaking with the old man, who is a big rugby fan and likes ozzy rules etc and he had not a clue either, neither of us that really give a cra# about soccer but GAA would be something I am sure we would both be into.

Who is Shane?

As i have only recently been introduced to this sport via a business partner its brand new to me and I am probably the only person who has to google to find out who the 2012 champions are!

P.S. Donegal fans, I know it now...

It just seems odd that there is not a big following through the rest of the UK, my kind of sport, much better than football (Soccer)

also because the GAA seem content to keep international coverage on some back catalouge sports channel called Premier Sports. If they gave it to terrestrial TV channels in the UK it would probably do well.

Chances are someone higher up in the GAA is pulling favours for their buddy in Premier Sports. Its how some people like things to run in Ireland.

Sounds pretty standard and that would make sense...
Pity I get totally bored of all the soccer coverage, sure the sport would take off fast if it were on the bbc.. given they can no longer afford golf or soccer maybe they should be looking at this, loads of people hate sky and 24.7 soccer..

I feel there is another major reason for the reluctance of HQ to promote the GAA abroad and that is the fear that it will lose control over the games in foreign countries if they were to prove popular there.

Im pretty sure Sky used to do a weekly show about 10 years ago called "Clash" which showed all the highlights from the previous week with no analysis. It was never on at peak times from what I can remember.

I work in England and what I find is that when I mention GAA there seems to be a more positive reaction to hurling than football. My boss always asks me about "that mad, fast game with sticks."
