Police raid three football clubs 
 
Police have raided three football clubs as part of an investigation into alleged corruption.
Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Rangers are the three clubs involved in the raids.

The operation is not connected to Lord Stevens's ongoing Quest inquiry into the Premiership and was "totally independent", police said.

Search warrants were executed on the club premises and two homes between 0730 and 0900 BST.

A City of London Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that search warrants were served at three football clubs and the homes of two individuals in connection with corruption in football and its impact on owners and shareholders."

'Criminal activity'

Newcastle United issued a statement confirming the club was visited by police.

"The club itself is not the subject of the investigation," it said.

"If the investigation by the City of London Police, or the ongoing internal review of operations by the club's new owners, show that the club has been the victim of any criminal activity, the club will take appropriate action."


A Northumbria Police spokesman said they were aware that "an operation" had been carried out by their London colleagues at St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United.

A spokesman for Rangers said: "Rangers football club was asked to co-operate with a police investigation and have done so, extending every co-operation to police.

"We have been requested by police not to comment further while the investigation is on-going."

Strathclyde Police confirmed that its officers had executed a search warrant on behalf of City of London Police.

Gary Double, director of communications at Portsmouth, said on Monday: "We can confirm police arrived around 10am today.

"We have co-operated fully with their search and will not be commenting further."

On-going inquiry

Detectives from the economic crime unit at City of London Police are investigating allegations of corruption within football and its impact on owners and shareholders.

Last month, they arrested a 61-year-old man in Manchester on suspicion of money laundering.

The BBC's Andy Swiss said police had denied any link between Monday's raids and the Stevens inquiry.

But he said the BBC had learned that information about 17 player transfers had been passed to the City of London Police by the Quest team.

Monaghan-Derry live on BBC Two NI 

Casement Park will host the Ulster SFC semi-final on 24 June


The second Bank of Ireland Ulster Football semi-final between Derry and Monaghan on 24 June will be televised live on BBC Two Northern Ireland.
The Casement Park clash has a 1530 BST throw-in and the BBC NI broadcast will start at 1515.

BBC Northern Ireland will also have live coverage of the Ulster decider at Clones on 15 July.

Sunday's opening semi-final between Tyrone and Donegal will be live on Radio Ulster and the BBC Sport website

Kenny on brink of rare cup double 


Dunfermline manager Stephen Kenny has played down the possibility of leading teams to cup wins in Scotland and Ireland in the same season.
"I'm just delighted for the players," said Kenny, who lifted the FAI Cup with Derry City, after the 1-0 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat of Hibernian.

"It is really remarkable how it has gone for us in the cup and I thought we deserved our victory.

"Hibs were tremendous, but we showed real guts and kept the ball well."


Dunfermline director of football Jim Leishman missed the game after a family bereavement.

And Kenny said: "Jim wasn't at the game because his younger sister died today and I want to dedicate the win to her memory."  This club could be really influential in the Premier League if we can stay up

Kenny also paid tribute to his side for overcoming John Collins' side.

"It was a tremendous performance from the players, they were relentless," he said.

"Hibs are just so difficult to play against because they interchange positions and they're tactically very astute. We just held in there.

"Dorus de Vries was tremendous in goal and the back four got some unbelievable clearances off the line.

"We had a few chances ourselves that we didn't take. When you play Hearts, Hibs, Rangers and Partick Thistle and you're in the final, that's earning the right to be in the final."

Dunfermline will face Celtic in the 26 May final and also go into the qualifying rounds of the Uefa Cup.

But they face a battle to lift themselves off the bottom of the Scottish Premier League.

"We are in Europe and want to do well there, so we really need to stay in the Premier League," he said.

"This club could be really influential in the Premier League if we can stay up."

The Pars must again overcome the odds to beat the newly-crowned Scottish champions in the final.

"They are an absolutely outstanding team, have reached the last 16 of the Champions League and had a magnificent double championship," said Kenny.

"But there's no point in enterting a competition if you don't think you can win it and it is not beyond us.
