GAA Discussion / Arlene Foster
April 01, 2018, 11:31:19 AM
Despite Arlene Foster's attendance at Croke Park yesterday to cheer on her native Fermanagh the still came up short against the Orangemen from Armagh.
Was this her first time in Croke Park since the Springsteen gig a few years ago?

GAA Discussion / Players injury scheme
June 24, 2017, 05:44:20 PM
According to Armagh's Jarlath Burns the players injury scheme costs the GAA 8M euros per year.  Can someone confirm if this figure is correct?
Seems rather high.

GAA Discussion / Yellow Cards
February 17, 2012, 11:58:26 AM
I know that if a player is sent off for a second yellow card in a club game for the second time within 48 weeks he is automatically suspended for 2 weeks but what would happen if he is sent off for a second yellow card offence 6 months after doing the two weeks?

GPA/GAA deal ratified by Central Council
The €8.5m, five-year deal between the GAA and the Gaelic Players Association was ratified unanimously by Central Council on Saturday.
The deal was expected to pass, although the fact that it got through without any opposition will come as a surprise to many.
Reports emerged during the week suggested that several Ulster counties were expected to vote against the deal, but fears of the issue driving a wedge between north and south appear to have been unfounded.
The deal will now see the GAA provide €8.5m in funding to the players' representative body over the next five years, equating to a maximum of €2m per annum.

Surely this cannot be true as it is my understanding that some counties had mad-dated their delegate to vote against this proposal?

Cavan break GAA's winter training ban
By John Fogarty

MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2010

CAVAN'S footballers were last night discovered as the first inter-county side to have broken the winter training ban after they arranged a practice game under lights at their 3G pitch at Breffni Park.

A couple of hours after the conclusion of the Ulster club SFC final at the Cavan town venue, the county's senior footballers convened to participate in a game which featured a number of 2010 first team players including James Reilly and Cian Mackey.

The county's new co-managers Val Andrews and Terry Hyland have not had an opportunity to run their players through their paces since their championship exit under Tommy Carr at the start of July.

It is understood that last night's session was the first time the footballers had trained collectively since they were knocked out by Cork in the second round of the All-Ireland qualifiers.

Rule 6.43 of the GAA's Official Code states that the months of November and December shall be closed months for all games involving inter-county teams and collective training for inter-county panels.

While gym sessions are permitted, only trial games involving development teams — featuring no players from the previous season's panel — are allowed.

GAA Discussion / Jack Bratton R.I.P.
August 25, 2010, 11:46:49 AM
Former Armagh Great Jack Bratton passes away.
Former Armagh player, Jack Bratton, has passed away.
Jack was a member of the Armagh 1949 All-Ireland winning minor team and was also a member of the Armagh team which lost to Kerry in the 1953 senior final.
The late Jack was a terrific ambassador for Armagh football and was known throughout the length and breadth of the country.  He was held in high esteem in the Kingdom of Kerry where he had many friends.
He was a true gentleman and the world will be much poorer as a result of his passing to his eternal reward.
Condolences to his family and friends and may his soul rest in peace.

GAA Discussion / Patsy O'Hagan RIP
March 21, 2010, 08:03:46 PM
Down legend O'Hagan passes away
Down GAA is in mourning after the death of twice All-Ireland Football winner Patsy O'Hagan.

The Clonduff club-man died over the weekend in Galway, where he lived since the 1970s.

O'Hagan played on the 1960 Down team that were the first side from the six Northern Ireland counties to clinch the Sam Maguire Cup.

He went on to lift a second All-Ireland medal 12 months later when Down retained the title.

O'Hagan also was the first Irishman to score a hat-trick at Wembley Stadium.

In the early 1960s, a number of gaelic teams played in a tournament at the world-famous London venue and O'Hagan scored four goals in a match against Galway.

After the feat, there were reports in the English press that Chelsea were keen on signing the gaelic footballer.

O'Hagan made his name as a full-forward but also played full-back for the Mourne County.

He was also a selector for the Down team which won the 1968 All-Ireland title.

GAA Discussion / Paul Grimley goes to Monaghan

Grimley in surprise Monaghan move
Paul Grimley has been named as the new assistant manager with Monaghan after turning down the chance of becoming boss of his native Armagh.
Grimley was the favourite to succeed Peter McDonnell in the Orchard post after quitting as assistant to Kieran McGeeney at Kildare.
His surprise appointment came just hours after Seamus McEnaney decided to remain as Farney manager.
McEnaney considered quitting after the All-Ireland qualifier defeat by Derry.
He informed the county board of his decision to take charge for a sixth consecutive year on Tuesday evening.
Marty McElkennon, who had been strongly linked with a move to Derry, is staying on as team trainer.
Grimley was Armagh assistant boss during Joe Kernan's reign and he was pipped for the top job by McDonnell in 2007.
The Pearse Og man is currently coaching Monaghan side Clontibret and has guided them to the county club semi-finals.

GAA Discussion / Louth GAA struck by tragedy
August 11, 2009, 10:48:33 AM
Louth GAA was plunged into mourning yesterday following the tragic death of young St. Mochta's footballer Terry Brennan.

The 19-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at the Louth County Hospital in Dundalk after it was believed he had been overcome with fumes while working in a silo at grain purchasers Drummond's Knockbridge plant.  A second man, believed to be in 30s, also died following the tragedy.

Mr Brennan, who was studying agriculture science, was one of St. Mochta's most promising players, having starred for their minor team last year.

A devastated St. Mochta's team manager Stephen Gernon said: "It's hard to take in.  It's an awful tragedy.

"Terry was the most popular man on the team. I don't think he ever missed training. He was so committed. He just loved being a part of the panel with the lads.
"He lived for the football and his personality lifted the dressing room.  He was the main character of the team and he comes from a lovely family."

The deceased, who was the eldest of six children, was working as holiday relief in advance of the busy harvest season.

Condolences to his heartbroken family and fellow players at St Mochta's GAA Club following this terrible tragedy.

TV Games hitting Mass attendances

A priest in Killarney has criticised the GAA for staging Saturday evening games that clash with Mass times.
Fr Kevin McNamara believes Mass attendances are being affected by the number of GAA games which are now being shown live on TV.
"Last Saturday evening you had live TV games from 3.30pm until after 8pm. You had Monaghan v Derry and Kerry v Longford in football, and then Clare v Galway in hurling," he said.
"That's going a bit too far when you think that those games are clashing with Saturday evening vigil Masses which are held in most villages and towns. I noticed numbers in (St. Mary's) Cathedral were down on Saturday evening.
"It could be that some people are on holidays, but the live GAA games on the TV are also a major factor."
Fr McNamara has called on all GAA fans to lobby their clubs and county boards to highlight the issue.
"Everybody loves the GAA - I'm a big fan myself - but surely our faith can come first sometimes, especially on a Saturday evening."

The throw-in for Cavan's Ulster SFC quarter-final clash with Fermanagh on Saturday week, June 6, has been brought forward by two hours to accommodate live television.

The game at Kingspan/Breffni Park was originally timed for 7.30pm, but will now throw-in at 5.30pm in order to avoid a clash with the World Cup soccer qualifier between the Republic of Ireland and Bulgaria in Sofia.

Both games will be shown live on RTE, while BBC will also televise the GAA fixture.

According to a report in today's Daily Mirror Donegal captain, Rory Kavanagh, revealed his anger after an Ulster Council official prevented him from lifting a first trophy as Donegal captain.
The report goes on to state "The new skipper received a yellow card towards the end of normal time in Saturday night's Gaelic Life Dr McKenna Cup final over Queen's and had to be replaced.
"When Donegal scored two goals in extra time to clinch their first McKenna Cup crown since 1991, Kavanagh was stopped from lifting the Cup in Healy Park by an official who insisted that he was suspended due to his yellow card offence.
"Chairman of the disciplinary task force Liam O'Neill, whose group designed the new playing rules, last night explained that their brief was only to deal with discipline on and field and there was no specific policy on presentation ceremonies.
"He confirmed it was up to Provincial Councils who ran the competitions to make such decisions, though indicated that yellow cards were only a sanction for the duration of the game and that technically the player was not under suspension.
"However, Kavanagh, was deprived of a rare opportunity to lift some silverware for Donegal and last night admitted 'I am very supset and annoyed about what happened'.
"'If I had received a straight red card then fair enough, I would have accepted it, but I only got a yellow.
"'I didn't think it was on to be told I wasn't allowed to go up for the presentation, totally uncalled for'.
Barry Monaghan was embarrassed to lift the trophy on Kavanagh's behalf and confessed he felt 'like a fraud'.
"'It was very unexpected because Rory is captain this year and I felt a wee bit of a fraud going up there to pick it up."

Did the Ulster Council official act correctly or was he just being officious?
