Biggest share of Maze stadium money 'to go the GAA'

Maze stadium plan The multi-sports stadium plan was abandoned

The GAA is to receive the lion's share of money earmarked for the building of a sports stadium on the site of the former Maze prison the BBC understands.

The GAA is thought to be in line for £50m, football £30m and rugby is to receive about £20m.

The Executive has still to sign off on the plans.

However, it is understood they have been approved by the Department of Culture and Leisure.

There are expected to be developments in the next two to three weeks.

The plan is dependent on the Irish Football Association reaching a resolution with Linfield over the running of Windsor Park.

A meeting is being held on Thursday night over that.

A proposal to build a stadium for football, Gaelic football and rugby at the site of the former Maze prison site was abandoned in 2009.

More than £3.5m was paid in consultancy fees for the project before the decision to shelve it.

Ex RUC man becomes Sinn Fein MLA

Coleraine councillor Billy Leonard has been selected by Sinn Fein colleagues to become an assembly member in East Londonderry.

He is succeeding the party's Francie Brolly who is to retire.

Mr Leonard is a former Orangeman, RUC reservist and member of the SDLP.

Following his selection he said it was an honour to be chosen to replace Mr Brolly "and to represent the people of East Derry".

"It is testament to the growth of Sinn Fein in this constituency that we are able to hold this convention tonight and I would thank all the party members who came along and contributed to this convention in such a comradely fashion.

"The north west region is one of the most deprived areas on this island and it is important that we have strong leadership to ensure East Derry is given its fair share," he said.

In an incredible twist in Premiership rules Manchester City were today allowed to play for 96 minutes in their match against Manchester United. Unfortunately, in spite of the referee allowing them 96 minutes in which to score more times than United t...hey failed to do so and United were declared winners.Read More

Best scam Ive received to date

Dear Friend,

I am Maureen Haughey, widow of former Taoiseach of the Republic of
Ireland, Charles J. Haughey and daughter of former Taoiseach of the
Republic of Ireland and heir to de Valera, Sean F. Lemass.

The Press has written a lot about unresolved mysteries and corruption
surrounding Charles's dealings, but I tell you something, my Charlie was a
good man. He was human and he did whatever he did. People marvel why I
stuck with Charlie and didn't speak during the mess that came with the
exposure of his affairs with Terry Keane (I just hate to think of her). I
had to stand by him through the tribunal times.. lt was to do with what
I'm doing now. No one knew the details of all Charlie's financial dealings
but me. I remain the only one who knows all who got loans from Charlie and
didn't come back to pay when he was disgraced. I am the only one who knows
about these monies and the other Ansbacher accounts.

I write to you, an old weary woman, sick and almost tired of living. My
end is near but I will not depart until my final mission is accomplished
and I also write this with an unshaken belief in the power of aspirations
and dreams of a human being. The Irish government thinks it can shave and
reduce me to a poor widow
but I have the winning ace. A few years ago,
when we weren't sure if my Charlie would be convicted, he kept some money
in trust for me in a Security and Finance company. He did not open the
account in our names so it will not be traced to us to enable the past
remain the past. The name on the account is Cedric de Vregille. I never
thought Charlie would leave me so soon and it never occurred to me to ask
if this name were fictitious or not or a name of any of his friends. I
have tried to find this man but to no avail. The amount he deposited in
this name is ?30,000,000 (Thirty Million Euros). I want an honest person
to come forward and lay claims to this amount, moreover to use the funds
as instructed by me. I have all the documents needed, I just need a face
for the name.

I have mapped out 10% of the funds for you, as you will help us (you and
I) execute this job. As soon as I receive your acceptance for this work I
shall give you necessary details of my solicitor who will facilitate the
release of the funds in your name. Please reply me via my personal
email:(mrs.haughey0@googlemail.com)

For my security and the sake of letting sleeping dogs lie, I strongly
advice that you keep our dealings confidential. You can read more about my

Deal brokered to end NI deadlock

The DUP and Sinn Féin have come to an agreement on the devolution of policing and justice powers designed to bring a 152-day deadlock at Stormont to an end.

Northern Ireland's first and deputy first ministers have set out a series of steps to be taken before policing and justice can be devolved.

The executive will meet on Thursday 20 November and on a weekly basis until business is up-to-date, they said.

There is no timetable but both parties are committed to completing the process

Under a special clause, temporary arrangements for electing a justice minister will be replaced by permanent rules by May 2012

Speaking at a news conference at Stormont, First Minister Peter Robinson said there had been "a satisfactory resolution of the most difficult issues".

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said "significant progress" had been made.

Both ministers said they wanted devolution to happen "without undue delay".

"We are both agreed that policing and justice functions should be devolved, every leading politician in this community is committed to this outcome," Mr McGuinness said.

Weekly meeting

Mr Robinson said: "We have agreed the executive should meet this Thursday, 20 November, the meetings will continue each week until business is up to date, we will then revert to our fortnightly meeting"

"The agreement we have reached represents a very satisfactory resolution of the most difficult issues relating to the modalities of transferring power and meets all of the publicly expressed concerns," Mr Robinson said.

"We believe these arrangements are capable of gaining the confidence of the community and we look to the prime minister to make good his commitment of helping to resolve the financial arrangements relating to the devolution of these powers."

The ministers were speaking to the media after a meeting of the assembly and executive review committee to discuss the devolution of policing and justice.

It was held in private. The DUP and Sinn Féin had been at odds over when the assembly should take these powers.

New attorney general

A new attorney general is to be appointed for Northern Ireland under the agreement.

Currently, the attorney general for England and Wales also holds the post for Northern Ireland.

The two ministers have announced they are "minded to invite" John Larkin QC to take the post.

Just four Irish apply for 'Girls of Ryanair' calendar

Just four of the 700 applicants for the 'Girls of Ryanair' calendar were Irish -- despite the proceeds going to an Irish charity.

The 2009 edition, launched in Dublin on Monday, is once again filled with bikini-clad Ryanair cabin crew from all over Europe.

But no Irish women featured in the latest calendar after just four applied. One was chosen but pulled out due to other commitments at the time of the photo shoot.

"We are hoping she will apply again for the 2010 calendar," a Ryanair spokesman said.

The calendars are priced at €10 each and the airline is hoping to raise €100,000 for the Simon Community which cares for the homeless.

Suggestions of prejudice against Irish girls were flatly denied by Ryanair yesterday.

CEO Michael O'Leary has no input into who is chosen for the calender, with the final decision left to the photographer and members of the production team.

But top model Rosanna Davidson believes more of an effort should have been made to involve Irish women in the fundraising project, saying: "If I was organising it, I would have made sure that Irish women were involved because it's an Irish charity and Irish fundraising.

"Any person from any part of Europe would say that Irish women are gorgeous."

The Simon Community's Sam McGuinness said the number of people requiring assistance from their Rough Sleeper Team had risen by 50pc during the first half of the year.

There are currently over 2,000 homeless on the streets of the capital, with over 110 sleeping rough each night.

Mr McGuinness defended the airline's decision to feature bikini-clad women.

"Ryanair have shown a genuine interest in helping and we have taken it at that level," he said.

Last year's calendar sparked a backlash from women's rights groups, including Spanish organisation FACUA, which accused Ryanair of presenting female flight attendants as "sexual objects".

And in a tongue-in-cheek move that is now typical of the Ryanair PR machine, a free copy of the new calendar is to be sent to the agency.

"Ryanair expects that these typical humourless groups will again oppose Ryanair's 2009 cabin crew calendar, but at least they will have the benefit of 13 stunning Ryanair babes throughout the year," a statement read.

apparently in their case, putting weapons beyond reach, means putting them inthe attic.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7675390.stm

80 recovered guns 'linked to UVF'

More than 80 guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition have been found by police in a loyalist area of Belfast.

Police officers went to the Ballysillan area of north Belfast to investigate the death of a man at the weekend. It is believed he took his own life.

In follow-up searches of his house, more than 70 guns - mostly handguns - and ammunition were discovered.

About 10 more guns were seized from a nearby lock-up premises. The guns are thought to be linked to the UVF.

All the weapons have been removed for examination and police inquiries.

The UVF announced last year that it was putting its weapons beyond reach.

BBC Northern Ireland security correspondent Vincent Kearney said UVF sources could not confirm the weapons belonged to the organisation.

Billy Hutchinson, a member of the PUP who has represented the UVF at meetings with the international decommissioning body, said he hoped to make a full statement later.

Senior UDA sources have said the weapons do not belong to them.

very selective in what questions are answered..........

10:29 DCAL Minister Gregory Campbell will commence answering your questions from 11am
10:51 SUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS BELOW

10:59 [Comment From Paul]
When will a decision be made on the Maze stadium?
11:01 Very shortly.
11:03 [Comment From Pat, Belfast]
Belfast has such a proud history of community arts - with theatres such as the late lamented Arts Theatre and The Group Theatre providing great plays and entertainment during some of the worst years of the Troubles. Has DCAL any plans to increase community arts funding?
11:03 Community Arts funding is a matter dealt with by the Arts Council which is an arms-length body of DCAL.
11:04 [Comment From john burke]
do you feel your small mindedness and petty bickering in relation to the position of the tyrone gaa team and your uncultured attitude to the whole issue has contributed to the "circling of the wagons" mentality now evident in government?
11:05 I congratulate all sporting excellence in Northern Ireland and, therefore, have no difficulty including the Tyrone GAA team in defeating Co Kerry from the Irish Republic.
11:05 [Comment From John]
Did the DUP not let down the Orange Order yesterday by failing to meet with the Ashdown Review on parading in Stormont?
11:07 The DUP were ready and in place to meet the Ashdown Review Team but, unfortunately, circumstances surrounding the deputy First Minister's availability precluded the meeting taking place.   The DUP remains ready to meet with the Ashdown Team again as with the Orange Order.
11:09 [Comment From Paul Campbell]
Have the Irish Football Association complied with all the DCAL/SportNI requirements needed to release the balance of the £8million promised grant aid and if not, what specifically remains for the IFA to do?
11:10 Quite a number of the matters requiring resolution from the IFA have been addressed.   There are a small number of matters still outstanding, hopefully will be resolved in the near future.
11:11 [Comment From Paul Campbell]
Do you believe that the 'history' of treatment and experience of Nationalists going to Windsor Park when attending football games can be overcome should it be decided to re-develop Windsor Park as the international venue?
11:11 I believe the experience in recent years of fans from all backgrounds at Northern Ireland home games has been an excellent one and hopefully that will continue whatever the outcome of the national stadium issue.
11:12 [Comment From Gareth Wilson]
Irish language is considered by many as a 'hobby' language spoken fluently by a very small minority. Does it warrant an actual 'Act' when its audience is so small?
11:12 No
11:12 [Comment From Phil]
In discussions with Sinn Fein thus far has the DUP ruled out any immediate movement on devolution of policing and Irish language legislation?
11:14 Numerous discussions have taken place between the DUP and Sinn Fein on the policing and justice issue.   Three months ago we both agreed this matter should be referred to the Executive Review Committee of the Assembly.   That remains our position.

11:14 [Comment From Charlie Stevens]
Should Northern Ireland have a new flag? e.g the St Patrick's Cross, with the six pointed star and the red hand in the centre. Given that Nationalists have accepted the St Patrick's Cross in the PSNI badge, the other symbols should also be acceptable i.e 6 counties and the red hand. In other parts of the UK, the regional flag flies alongside the Union Jack. We either need to start flying the current NI flag or create one as soon as possible.
11:15 The national flag is the union flag.   If each of the respective countries that comprise the United Kingdom wished to fly flags representing their specific countries alongside the Union flag I would have no objection to that.
11:16 [Comment From Phil]
Why would the DUP not consent to devolution of policing and justice on condition that it must be held by the Alliance party for the time being?
11:17 We did not oppose such a suggestion.   The issue is whether Government in its entirety stops until policing and justice is resolved to Sinn Fein's satisfaction or do discussions continue on that matter while all the other outstanding issues are progressed through Executive meetings.
11:17 [Comment From Charlie Stevens]
Isn't it time for Northern Ireland to have it's own football anthem, like Scotland and Wales? This could be played along with God Save the Queen.
11:18 This issue should be discussed and resolved by the football supporters and authorities themselves.
11:18 [Comment From Paul Campbell]
How long will it take for a catholic/nationalist to hold a position of an Office Bearer at the IFA and the fact that one hasn't held such a position since the IFA's conception, if not at least in living memory, concern DCAL in terms of 'equality proofing' and the release of funds to this organisation?

11:20 I have no information about the religious affiliation of any of the officebearers in the IFA (or the GAA Ulster Council  for that matter).   The appointment of such posts is a matter for each of these organisations.

11:20 [Comment From Charlie Stevens]
Given that the GAA refuses to become a normal sporting organisation, isn't it time to stop funding it under equality laws? And if funding can't be stopped, should the Orange Order set up a sporting wing (youth football teams in every Orange Hall)? If so, could they expect full funding without having to meet cross-community criteria (like the GAA)?

11:23 Since becoming Minister I have raised the issue of concerns surrounding the background and history of the GAA, significant progress has been made in recent years but more needs to be done.

11:23 [Comment From Michael]
there is a real big need for a motor sports centre - the Maze site would be perfect and there will be no sectarion issues - will it be considered?

11:26 2+4 Motorsport umbrella group is the body which makes representation for the motorsport fraternity in Northern Ireland.   I have had very positive discussions with this group and any suggestions which may emerge at future discussions I will obviously consider.

11:26 [Comment From Phil]
How is equality legislation met when DCAL funds sporting organisations which have explicit political and terrorist names and features? ie the GAA names many clubs after terrorists and plays the Irish national anthem at matches. Isnt this breaching equality legislation?

11:27 Since becoming Minister I have raised the issue of concerns surrounding the background and history of the GAA, significant progress has been made in recent years but more needs to be done.

11:28 [Comment From Guest]
Will the local government in any way ever help clubs locally in giving funding to pave the way for full time football to help our standing in Europe to move up the rankings.

11:28 Through my Department Sport NI have a number of funding streams available to clubs to assist in development of their grounds.

11:29 [Comment From Equal opportunity Prod]
Isn't it about time that the British/Unionist culture got the same backing as the Irish/Nationalist culture. And would an Irish language Bill skew the funding crisis even further in favour of rampant nationalists?

11:30 I want to see resources deployed in such a way that the British identity receives equitable funding.

11:30 [Comment From Niamh]
Will the Minister host a reception for the Tyrone teams who won the All Ireland minor and senior championships?

11:31 All requests for receptions will be considered.

11:31 [Comment From RJM]
The Maze question has already been asked, but do you not accept that a National Stadium for just soccer and rugby, 25,000 capacity, located in Belfast, is the way forward. Have you visited the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. They play both soccer and rugby there and it would be the perfect model for NI to follow.

11:32 I haven't visited that stadium but in the very near future I hope to bring some clarity to the uncertainty which has dogged this issue for so long.

11:33 [Comment From John, Tyrone]
When will you introduce an Irish Language (Acht na gaeilge) as set down in the St Andrews agreement?

11:34 St Andrews was an agreement between our Government and the Government of the Irish Republic.

11:34 [Comment From Rob]
"Very shortly". Do you not mean when the Sinn Fein Deputy First Minsiter agrees with you?

11:35 All Parties exercising vetos need to understand the mutual nature of this process.
