They are playing the anthem before the city game on match of the day. Will they play it before the Liverpool game?

I am so proud of them Trent didn't sing a word.

Not being a Liverpool fan, I don't know the history here.   Why would an English crowd boo their own national anthem?

Liverpool historically is a working class city, one that has been left behind whilst the South of England flourished. The European city of culture money in 2008(?) was a big help to the city but resentment towards Tories, the Royal family etc still remains.

Isn't that the case with most of the North of England but they still love a bit of bootlicking?

Throw in the Hillsborough cover up,  Thatchers managed decline of the city in the 80's and a general disregard for authority.

I've never  understood the  singing of GSTQ/K.  Footballers, rugby hockey etc,  standing for that anthem  in honour of  a billionaire bellend. I mean , what do they say?   come on lads let's do  this for Lizzie/Charlie??

It's like the Irish  team shouting , come on  lads ,  Let's  win this for  Bono!

Christ , but  the Brits are weird

On top of everything mentioned, a lot of Liverpool people seem to think differently about their national identity than other parts of England. Liverpool supporters aren't particularly into following England. The idea of monarchy and the establishment doesn't fit well in a city more affiliated with socialism. Maybe the Irish heritage is a factor in part as well.
That's just, like your opinion man.

I have never known the Liverpool crowd to be as political as they have been over the past few seasons," he says. "There is a beautiful banner that only comes out now and then. It goes near enough end to end in the Kop and it reads We are Not English, We Are Scouse. And that sensibility is tied in with booing the monarchy and the national anthem.

The writer Tony Evans outlined the rationale and energy behind the crowd hostility towards the anthem and an anti-monarchical stance: that it was the latest in Liverpool's on-going protest against England's prevailing class system and the establishment indifference.
The mood then was dominated by the Toxteth Riots and mass unemployment - set against the fabulous escapism of Liverpool's 1981 European Cup win.

"The release, after 30 years, of the state papers of the Thatcher administration in 1981 confirmed what Liverpudlians knew about the conservative party attitude towards the city.

Advising against Michael Heseltine's bid for a £100 million urban regeneration investment, then chancellor Geoffrey Howe warned Thatcher the government "must not expend all our limited resources in trying to make water flow uphill" and that the option of "managed decline" should not be discounted for Liverpool

It would be some roll to get 4th!  What are the odds.  Something like a 1% chance of that happening?

9/2 now after Uniteds loss last night. #ItsOn

Edit. It's equivalent to 18.2%.

23.1% now. It's the hope that's killing me.

The odds swinging in Liverpools favour now surely. I'd be surprised if they missed out on the top 4 now.

Fecking hope kills ye....

If they don't beat Wolves next Saturday I'll start to believe.

I wasn't expecting United to lose at West Ham. Newcastle also lost. Brighton are still ahead of Liverpool if they win their games in hand.

I still expect Liverpool to come up just short but I am not as sure as I was yesterday.

United only need 9 points from 6 games to guarantee CL. And they'll only need that many if Liverpool win all their remaining games, which won't happen (nor will Brighton win all theirs), so highly unlikely United won't make it.

Actually 9 points from 5 games now, but still
9 from 4 now.

Wish we were playing good enough that they actually need 9. But they'll probably make it with less.
