Interesting argument that, given the team they played in match 5 was the same team they played in match 6.

Still, I'm sure your post is no reflection on the standard of the discourse here in recent years.

Was that the same year as Ray McCarron's goal? Denis Hollywood did some damage for Armagh too - was it against Fermanagh?

Might as well put up a happy one.

Something else when this went in. On the Hill, didn't see it hit the net as everyone on their feet before it went in. Was like a mosh pit for a few minutes afterwards, ears ringing, voice gone, we were in a different part of the Hill when we finally came back to our senses. After match celebrations were crazy, totally! Couldn't get away with it nowadays. Was the Thursday when the voice finally came back. Great times and people, a lot of them buried since very young. Bittersweet in many ways.

You seem to be missing context alright

Will never forget 1977 semi finals against  Roscommon as an Armagh fan
As a child first time in Dublin , first time I missed mass ( both times )first time croke park
Still can remember the first day vividly .
Had a wooden rattle and a crepe paper hat .
Jeez still brings a lump to my throat when I remember people who were at the game .

Football - 1982 All Ireland Football final, I was only a young lad in the Hogan stand that day it was magical. The water coming off the net as the goal went in. To this day I could never understand why so many Offaly supporters had made their way onto the sideline with 3 mins left.

Hurling - 1994 All Ireland, it was a slow burning performance from Offaly. The last 5 mins were pure magic, for an Offaly man I should add.

I've been very lucky to see Offaly win and loose hurling and Football finals in both codes at Senior level, U21/U20 level, and minor hurling. Unfortunately at minor football only seen Offaly loose an AI. For a small county it's not bad.

While our recent win was a bit out of the blue, in 1977 a whole generation had no memory of Armagh playing in Croke Park. I recall one neighbour, a GAA man, saying that he had never been in Croke Park. He would have been a child in 1953 and had had no business there in the intervening years. Now with quarter finals and the like everyone has been there.

Quote from: NotedObserver on August 24, 2024, 10:45:20 PMEither of these games against dubs

05- tyrone v Dublin replay. The noise from the dub supporters when coming back was something I've never heard since.

08. Tyrone v Dublin. The win in the rain was totally unexpected from my view point. Hitting dubs for goals was great to see

Two great choices. The noise from the Dublin fans in the first one when they hit those five points in a row to come back into it - then silence when Mugsy answered with the goal and celebrated by staring down the Hill. As iconic in its own way as the goal in the first game!

And 2008 was an incredible team performance.

My own favourite was the 2005 final. Some in Kerry - some very high in Kerry - had denigrated Tyrone after 2003 (chairman making comments in 2004 about saving the sport). Seeing Kerry simply unable to cope with Tyrone in 2005 was the most beautiful answer. The 3 point margin of defeat flattered Kerry and truth was that Tyrone were just a better team with better players.

You were a good bit the better team and now you seem to read in places that Kerry could have won. They could have but it would have really been against the run of the play. Tyrone much the better team in 05.

I don't there's a credible case that Kerry could have won in 2005. They made a good start and led 1-2 to 0-2 early on but Tyrone took over and from there to half-time outscored Kerry 1-6 to 0-3. They carried that into the second half and Kerry couldn't live with them with the lead going out to 1-12 to 1-7. Kerry were in dire straits and desperately needed a goal which came from Tomas O Se against the run of play. But from then getting back within a point Tyrone took over again and outscored them 0-4 to 0-2 to the finish. I don't see how Kerry could have won - other than the opening stages they were chasing the game and hanging onto Tyrone's coat-tails.

Those 3 games between 2003 and 2008 brought 3 Tyrone wins with an aggregate margin of 14 points. The only one Kerry could have won was 2008 against the weakest Tyrone side of the three - and even then they were outscored 0-5 to 0-0 in the closing stages.
