Not sure it is great for a club player to train for 7 or 8 months and have their only meaningful game be a championship defeat.

Yea they have it down for the 8 losers to all play off against each other, with the eventual loser dropping down to intermediate championship for 2026 (separate from the league).

While we all agree the groups stages had to go, it don't think straight knockout is the answer either. Best way would be to have one second chance or back door like we had a while back. Avoids the tedious groups stages, every team guaranteed at least two meaningful championship games, and cuts in half those who would be in the relegation side of the draw (only those teams who lose both the first round and the back door enter relegation).

Back door games are crap. I'd rather have groups even if they were made smaller. Straight knockout is probably the way to go.

So is that a case of the 8 losers play off to leave you with 4, these 4 play off in 2 games to leave you with a final 2, and the loser of this final game is relegated?

In other words you need to lose 3 games in a row after your first round defeat to get relegated? Can probably have no complaints at that stage plenty of chances to get out of it

Yes, that's exactly it. So every team will get 2 meaningful games at least - either 2 championship games, or a championship game and at least one championship relegation game.

Will Derry City Soccer have to pay to use Owenbeg like the ladies teams do?

From what I've heard it's £100k deal for use of all facilities but during the day only.

Hard to beat if true, would only be used at daytime for schools matches anyway which only need 2 pitches at most

Interested to see how people on this would line out on Saturday. taking injuries into account.

Holding these team sheets tightly in the purse

Derry hurlers could give Division 2 a real good crack this year.

Down, Kerry, and Kildare all favourites for promotion, but Derry will be well fit to beat any of them.

Tyrone today should be a good game to start off with.

Some of the Slaughtneil lads were very impressive in Ulster and against Sars. This year could be a very good opportunity for Derry.

See McNaughton is back again this year lining out at full forward today. Whats the story there? How / Why is he eligible?

I think it highlights the standard of Derry hurling, players on that Derry squad who don't start for their clubs.

Brendan

McGuigan the only man who stood up there tonight. Hard to see where we pick up any points with our home games coming against probably the toughest 3in the league

Teams not playing in Liam McCarthy Cup /Div 1 NHL can take transfers from other counties. McNaughton just there for the GPA grant and expenses as far as I can see.
Let no-one say the best hurlers belong to the past. They are with us now, and better yet to come

Killkenny not get a Kerry lad for this season?
