Quote from: jmcgdoire on December 15, 2024, 08:12:30 PMI dont particularly rate Tohill and I do believe he has been given plenty of chances and clearly he just wasnt good enough. But maybe Tally has having a think about the kind of players who will be valuable with these rule changes. I think its totally fair to bring in a 6'5 former Australian Football player and see if he can offer anything inside. And if he cant he'll be dropped. No harm done.

I don't recall him being given many chances, maybe one or 2 appearances as sub in the mckenna cup. I can't judge because I haven't seen enough of him but he might be useful with the new rules.

Getting onto the panel was his chance. Thats more chance than 95% of players in the county get.
He wasnt outstanding for Swatragh and still he got onto the panel. He apparently wasnt great up there and still be got game time. I cant think of any player in Derry whos been given a better chance.

I thought the ref was really harsh on them today at critical times, Sarsfields over carrying, cynical fouling and O Doherty hit to the head was a red card.

Hard luck to Slaughtneil, they did really go for it to be fair and just wasn't to be for them. They're obviously not far away, hopefully they can make the break through to the AI final in the next few years when they have such a good crop of players.

The ref was so inconsistent all game - seemed like a different referee in the last 10 compared to how he had been refereeing the game up until that point.

How much game time he get? Cause he didn't play in any league games i remember. 1 game in the McKenna Cup and maybe another 10/15mins in another? Hardly plenty of chances

Yeah I remember thinking why have him on the panel if he's not being thrown in for a Mckenna game or two. Didnt really seem to get any chances.
I think we are lacking size, and if nothing else he fits that bill and can perhaps be shaped from there.
He was good enough to get chosen for Aussie football at a point, played minor too so has to have talent.

I'd have no issue with any players getting a call up at this time of year, especially under a new manager who will want to make his own mind up.

His chance is getting to play for Swatragh and try prove he is County standard. His next chance is getting the call up and to train with the best players in Derry. Thats your chance. If he didnt get more game time its because he wasnt good enough. When he did get game time he wasnt impactful. Should every player on the panel get a full 70 minutes in the league before the manager decides hes not good enough?

Like I said: I have no problem with Tally taking another look at him but to say he hasnt been given enough chances is very soft

Hard luck Slaughtneil - tough to take especially when you get so close.

Also hard luck to Ballinascreen - unfortunately wasn't to be on the day, but a good mix of experience and youth on that team so hopefully will stand to them going forward.

And different managers will often think differently re certain players, can find a way to best utilise them, get the best out of them. We've nailed on starters now who were 'in out, in out, shake it all about' until Gallagher seen something I them that would work in his system

Jack Doherty was county standard for a long time, what ever chance did he get?

Saw a good few Derry games he played in. Good player but maybe just not quite good enough for county.

Derry Optimist

Another player who would be a definite asset to Derry would be a fit Oisin McWilliams from Swatragh. He came on as a substitute against Dublin in Derry's famous win in the League in Celtic Park in 2023 and scored a magnificent point shortly afterwards. I know that he has been plagued by a long - term injury. Does anyone know if and when he will be fully fit again? If fit and with Emmett Bradley apparently retired, he would be a welcome addition in the middle third of the pitch.

Would be definite addition but has really bad injury and playing at all again I believe is the target before even considering Derry.
Realistically Emmett Bradley hasn't been doing much for Derry in the last 3/4
years so retirement is to be expected.
Patrick Kearney fully committed would be big addition if Tally could get him on board.

Don't think so. Sean's the best footballer in that house. A class act. Deserves a run though size maybe an issue at that level
