There's absolutely no way the Downeys deserve to be involved and Tohill might have the physical attributes but football wise is severely lacking. Derry selections as usual are just about keeping certain clubs happy for a new management team.
Your response suggests you don't have any close involvement with a club. Most clubs would prefer to keep their players with them & not lose them for an entire league campaign. There is little/no benefit of having a squad player train in a county set-up but miss a years football in the process.

Many intermediate/ North Derry clubs would love to get some players around county panels and the players themselves want to be there, need something for the youth to aspire to which kids in North Derry haven't had in a long time now

You would assume that the number of call ups is in relation to trying to play as many in house and challenge games as possible to get used to the new rules with no McKenna Cup. Given this I think this was a good chance to have a look at some of the intermediate and junior clubs, even if just, as Brendan says, to give them a bit of exposure. What good is there in looking at the likes to Tohill again who has been given numerous chances and shown he isnt county standard. Personally I don't think there is anyone not looked at in intermediate or junior who could make the step up, but what would be the harm in having a look at them for a couple of months, expose them to county training and gym work and who knows you might find one or two, and if not then they go back to their clubs in a better place and ready for the season. Instead they seem to have gone down the usual route of certain names and certain clubs.

Disgraceful comment on a public board. Its a wonder any young player bothers to give their time and energy to a team with such supporters.

So let me get this straight.. Tally is in with a view to get Derry back on track and winning things. He's put together a serious backroom team and will work around the clock to try and achieve success for our county, but, and this is the kicker, he's picking players because of who their Da is and keeping clubs, happy? Red10, take me to your dealer!

Ah get away out of that. It's a discussion forum. The one thing that will impact commitment of lads is seeing people involved who are not there on merit. As someone said is there no opportunity for lads from Intermediate or Junior clubs to get a chance. People are talking about players who don't even play in Derry ! That's a real kick in the teeth for anyone who thinks there is a chance of selection.

Same old shite every year, crying about south Derry favouritism. Who from Intermediate/Junior is good enough for the county panel? Unless you give names the complaining is useless, also the Downey's are more than good enough & im not sure how much of a chance Tohill got, thought he only played for a year

Brendan

The annual referee recruitment drive has begun, can imagine a few older heads will walk away this year coming with a completely new game to get their heads around and be even less coming forward with the inevitable challenges that lye ahead. Derry couldn't even cover all the adult championships this year so may end up like Tyrone with the statement they had about the future of games due to ref shortages

If they didn't get the abuse they did, they have more available. Yes I been to games refs have done some stupid things, but it get worse with inexperienced refs. Bigger problem is always a few mouths other side of the fence giving hell, who don't even know updated rules. Same can be say for a no.of senior management teams.

I dont particularly rate Tohill and I do believe he has been given plenty of chances and clearly he just wasnt good enough. But maybe Tally has having a think about the kind of players who will be valuable with these rule changes. I think its totally fair to bring in a 6'5 former Australian Football player and see if he can offer anything inside. And if he cant he'll be dropped. No harm done.

Be tough for Slaughtneil to take today. Came agonisingly close.

I thought the ref was really harsh on them today at critical times, Sarsfields over carrying, cynical fouling and O Doherty hit to the head was a red card.

I don't recall him being given many chances, maybe one or 2 appearances as sub in the mckenna cup. I can't judge because I haven't seen enough of him but he might be useful with the new rules.
