And so Mayo go through to their 10th All-Ireland semi-final in 11 years.
For a bit of context, consider the fact that before 2011 they had been in 10 All-Ireland semi-finals in the previous 30 years.

How about 2 semi-finals in 25 years 1955-1980

We are well on our way to emulating that or even bettering it based on Sundays display.  One would hope the second half "display" provokes the much desired response from the powers that be in Galway football - recent history suggests not....................

Abysmal display from Galway, especially the forwards. Dublin thoroughly deserving of their victory.

We thoroughly got what our performance deserved.

PJs point is well made BUT venue selection is finalised at this stage so we move on and focus on what will be a tough game up in Monaghan.  It's a right good game to have in the lead up to the championship and if we think we are good enough to be in Div 1, well then we should be winning it regardless of the venue IMO.  The last 2 performances have been a small step in the right direction but our own kick outs and the defence / attack balance still need a lot of work. 

[Overall there's no point getting too up or down about this league once they show some bit of form ahead of the Roscommon Connacht semi-final and aren't relegated.]

Flynn and Daly injured. Sean Kelly carrying a slight knock I think hence is on the bench. I think 9 of that team started the Connacht final.

Interesting to see how they go, genuinely have no idea if they will be good or poor tomorrow. Tough match up as Kerry have been seething since the Cork match last year so expecting them to come out all guns blazing, Galway had a terrible post COVID lockdown season with 3 losses on the bounce and outside of Sean Kelly and Conroy - who was unplayable for club and county - not too many performed up to standard at all, good bit of pressure on there as well.
Overall there's no point getting too up or down about this league once they show some bit of form ahead of the Roscommon Connacht semi-final and aren't relegated.

That's it in a nutshell.  God only knows where some teams and players will be at in terms of prep / conditioning etc.  A clean bill of health and as close to a fully fit squad as possible going into the championship would make a welcome change for Galway.

Brilliant win especially given the injuries to big players, majority of these players have lost the last 2 minor finals so delighted for them.

Galway really look tired in that last 15 minutes, you could see in the warm up Dublin looked the bigger side.

My feckin nerves!  Delighted for that group of lads, a good few have lost minor finals.  Poor second half performance and the backs dug the win for us in the end. 

The very best of luck to the U20s this afternoon.  James McLoughlin is a significant loss but the 2 lads selected in MF were both excellent against Kerry. Paul Kelly misses the semi final and should be a significant addition around the middle third also.  Not sure how much training continuity they have had over the past few months but hopefully they put in a solid performance and see where it takes them today. 

In the last few days I learned of an interesting connection between the Maamtrasna murders and the Bloody Sunday massacre.

In 1882 in Maamtrasna on the Galway and Mayo border five members of the Joyce family were murdered in their beds. One of the young sons, Martin, survived because he was out of the house on the night of the murders. Some years later Martin was married and settled in Dublin where he had a large family. Two of his sons Joe and Christy played football with Parnells (Stephen Cluxton's club). On Bloody Sunday both Joe and Christy were on the Dublin team which was caught up in the massacre.

And of course the great Johnny Joyce who scored six goals for the Dubs in a Leinster championship game against Longford in 1960 was a grandson of Martin Joyce.

Yes it's a fascinating connection.

I knew that Johnny Joyce was a grandson of Martin Joyce who survived the Maamtrasna massacre, but I didn't know that two of Martin's sons were on the field on Bloody Sunday. At the moment, by coincidence, I'm reading The Maamtrasna Murders by Margaret Kelleher and she mentions the Bloody Sunday connection in her book.

I live close to Kilbarrack Cemetery in Fingal where Martin Joyce is buried (a long way from Maamtrasna).

Great story for the weekend that's in it and a thoroughly deserved win for the Tipp lads.  Delighted for them.

Maurice Deegan is a very poor ref - couple of very debatable frees there to Cork in the first 15 mins. 

They felt they couldn't give MOTM to the lad after him cynically taking a player out, only plausible reason.

Yeah, that was probably the reasoning alright. He carried some great ball for Mayo today in fairness to him.  Shot selection is a bit suspect but he's a big addition to that HF line.  His overall performance highlighted the loss of John Daly even more unfortunately for us.
