General discussion / Speakers, ohms, confused !
August 29, 2007, 08:57:10 PM
One for the techies.....

I have bought a cinema system which has 3 ohm satellite speakers. I am not going to use 4 of the satellite speakers and am instead going to get 4 ceiling recess speakers which are already wired for. My problem is i can only seem to find 4, 6 or 8 ohm ceiling speakers online. As i understand it, the wattage of the ceiling speakers does not have to exactly match the ones i will not use from the cinema system but the different impedance (ohms) could result in me blowing the in-built amplifier that comes with the cinema system. Can anybody confirm  re this ? I couldn't get a definitive answer from the sony centre i visited.

2nd problem/question .....  i am using the 4 satellite speakers from the cinema system as standalone speakers in a high ceiling living area. These are going to connect back to a 2 way stereo amplifier (thus the speakers can only be controlled in pairs) to which i will connect a small radio/CD player. Given that the satellite speakers are 3 ohm, does this mean each channel of the stereo amplifier which will be each supporting 2 speakers would have to be 6 ohm ?

Finally, i am presuming the wiring that is done on the house will not in anyway change the impedance / ohms and thus the 2 scenarios above are the only 2 i need worry about ?

General discussion / Broadband from 3
August 16, 2007, 08:46:50 PM
Anyone have a subscription to 3 for broadband access ? Any opinions as am thinking of changing ...

Basically their solution is a new 3DataModem (www.three.ie) - its just a USB connector that connects to your PC or laptop (need USB port obviously) that basically has a sim card in it and so uses three's 3G network (well 3.5G actually - HSDPA network rather than WCDMA/3G) to connect to the internet. Its 129euro for the device and then €20 a month after that which is cheaper than most of the other options on the market at the moment, and faster in that it has a connection speed of >3.6 MB/sec. Also this is truly wireless in that it will work anywhere you can get the 3 network in Ireland (currently 85% coverage - click on 3G icon box at http://maps.three.ie/coverageViewer/jsp/content/mapScreen.do for coverage), same as a mobile phone.

General discussion / Buying a car
August 14, 2007, 03:05:10 PM
Someone might have experience of this before ......

Am buying an 18 month old car on carzone that has a 3 year manufacturers warranty. Can anyone confirm for 100% that this warranty will pass on to me as the new owner. The car looks spotless and as good as new with very low mileage. Engine looks clean enough to eat your dinner off it - question is would you bother spending €100+ on a mechanic to give it the once over given the 3 year warranty that i am presuming passes on to me ?

GAA Discussion / Condom gloves !
August 01, 2007, 10:57:22 PM
OK, no intent on discussing the merits of all the different gloves on the market but was just wondering ..... given that the surface of all bar the mikasa and green cotton gloves are made of latex and given that the gloves used by say most canteen staff or staff in an operating theatre or even the A.I. man ! are all made of latex, then has anybody ever tried wearing a pair of these with a clean wet ball. In principal should be the same effect?? and players wouldn't lose that close feel of the ball like you do with most 'normal' latex gloves
I'm being deadly serious here !! and better still given that the finest latex is in condoms then what about putting a condom on each finger  :P  :P

GAA Discussion / Ger Canning
July 29, 2007, 10:07:24 PM
Now first let me say i am not Ger Canning in disguise so take this as a honest opinion ......
Canning has got dogs abuse over the years on this board, along with 1 or 2 other commentators in RTE. A lot of it was well deserved as he seemed to have got lax in his approach and the professionalism was no longer as evident.
However ....... credit where it due, imho i think he has upped his game substantially over the last few months. Not so many little errors with names anymore and significantly, he seems to be commentating with a genuine passion. Am i imagining all this or does anyone else think the same, or different ?
Compared in contrast with Marty Muppet ... the guy is simply getting worse and worse and is completely drained altogether of any level of enthusiasm when commentating.

All in all i think Canning is now back as No. 1 commentator in RTE, even ahead of Darragh Maloney.

Brolly was commenting on the recent Mayo Derry match. This is way over the top imho:

Quote"Bellaghy's Michael McGoldrick was easily the best player on the field, and does everything right. He put Conor Mortimer in his pocket and fed him on farts, as we used to say in primary school. Conor is no good anyway, the sort of boy Adrian McGuckin had in mind when he said he distrusted boys with 'dyed hair and trendy clothes that scored 2-5 in friendlies'."

Sure Conor had a poor game but this type of shite is way over the top, even for Brolly. I've always taken what he says with a pinch of salt but this time he has gone too far imho

Anyone ever hear about this company before:

http://www.steorn.com/orbo/

They were mentioned on the breaking news website today. Seems like a fairly fanciful notion bu if it is proved to be true well then wow ! absolutely huge, implications would be incredible .... and they are Irish

General discussion / Nurses Strike
April 03, 2007, 09:51:48 PM
So nurses want a reduced working week to 35 hours and a 10% increase in pay.
While like everyone else i am sure, there is no doubting the value of the work they do, however:

The myth about the Labour court saying 27 years ago that the nurses working week should be reduced to 35 hours is exactly that, a myth. The Labour court said that if the average working week is reduced to 35 hours, then so should the nurses working week.
Re the pay, the average salary for a nurse is €56,000. I have to say i am shocked at the size of the figure. They are going to get a 10% rise over 27 months under benchmarking, they are looking for an additional 10% in this instance and if their working week were reduced to 35 hours it would effectively mean a further 11.4% increase in their hourly rate.
Get back to work  ::)

GAA Discussion / 5 on the sideline
December 13, 2006, 11:43:45 PM
I see all these new rules are kicking in for the NFL re water carriers, designated warm ends, 5 non-subs in the dugout. Re the last point, is there anything in it to stop the manager from doubling up as both manager and runner.
I'd said Paidi is back running up over Galrus (spl?) every day at the thought of it
