GAA Discussion / The anti-Tyrone thread...

To save all the bitter Armagh posters (and Indiana)  the hassle of creating yet another imaginary Newbie account posing as 'neutrals'  disgusted at Tyrone's shenanigans, they can just post their vitriolic outbursts here....

GAA Discussion / Cynical and Negative Armagh?
February 10, 2015, 09:12:32 AM
Wexford manager David Power has accused Kieran McGeeney's Armagh of bringing cynicism, cheating and negativity to a whole new level with the referee allowing persistent,  deliberate fouling to go unpunished and calling on the GAA to deal with Armagh's cynical play.

Do we need a change in the rules?  Or do referees just need to enforce the black and yellow card sanctions more effectively.

General discussion / Suarez not a big game player?
December 30, 2013, 10:03:26 AM
Luis Suarez has understandably earned a lot of plaudits this year for his 19 goal haul in the Premier League but when push comes to shove, he hasn't performed at the critical times for Liverpool this year whereas Wayne Rooney has for United.

The statistics show that Suarez isn't a big game player.

http://i2.wp.com/thepeoplesperson.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/suarez-stats.jpg

In this Premier League season, he has scored 16 goals in seven games against the current worst seven sides but only three goals in eight games against the top 13 sides.

In comparison, Rooney has scored six out of his nine goals against the top 13 which is not a surprise as Rooney has always been a player for the big occasion.

From Champions League finals to highly charged Manchester derbies, Rooney thrives off the big stage. The pressure seems to make him play better.

Beating the teams lower down in the league is crucial to any Premier League title race but any team needs their best players to step up in the biggest matches and replicate that sort of form when it truly matters against the title rivals.

When push comes to shove in the big matches, you'd still pick Rooney in a heartbeat over Suarez because of his big match ability

I need to get 4 crowns replaced and have read come great reports about Hungary having the best dental care in the west.   I could save more than the price of flights and accommodation.

Does anyone know of someone who has gone there for treatment and can they recommend any particular clinic?

No Kerryman's gonna lock down on the only Provincial Championship worth discussing......

QuoteArmagh's full forward line-up wasn't bad.

The Grimley's didn't really like Tyronnies that much.

Very tight fitting tops and shorts - no crests or logos.

Canavan had hair.

The Grimley's were probably still sore from when Eugene McKenna & Harry McClure dispelled the myth about them being hard in Irvinestown.....

General discussion / How to take a penalty kick

Fast forwards to Artur Boruc's penalty on 11mins 40.   Sudden death, goalies have to take their kicks and the Dundee Utd keeper dispatches his, leaving them 10-9 ahead.  If Boruc misses Celtic are out.   Up he steps and hits it like Del Piero into the top corner.   Ballsy hoor!

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/18112008/58/int-football-fist-butcher-threatens-maradona.html

Scotland's assistant manager Terry Butcher has said he will never forgive Diego Maradona for his Hand of God goal at the 1986 World Cup.

Butcher was part of the England side that lost the infamous quarter-final 2-1 to Argentina, as Maradona scored with a clear handball before adding a magnificent solo run.

The former defender said he was still angry with Maradona, who coaches the Argentina team that play Scotland at Hampden on Wednesday, and even joked that he might use the "fist of Terry Butcher" to exact revenge.

"I can never forgive him for what he did. It was probably the best chance England had of winning the World Cup since 1966," said Butcher.

"At the end of the day it is not nice when you lose a World Cup quarter-final under those circumstances. It's very hard to forgive and forget in the circumstances.

"But it was 22 years ago. I think I'm 4-1 to get a red card in the tunnel - it would be the fist of Terry Butcher rather than the hand!"

Butcher also revealed that he encountered Maradona after the game when the pair were required to do drugs tests along with his England team-mates Gary Stevens and Kenny Sansom, and the Argentinian claimed he had not handled the ball.

"It could have been a warzone in there but it wasn't. I wasn't next to him; if I was I might have done something. I would pay a few thousand pounds to be in that drugs room again if I knew he was going to be in there," Butcher said.

"He came in and celebrated. He was the last person you wanted to see because, remember, he had also scored a wonderful goal on the way to which he beat me twice. I felt it more than anybody else.

"When I signalled to him about the head or the hand, he pointed to his head. Maybe that was because it was a small room and there were three Englishmen, not very happy, so he probably took the safe option.

"But that irritated me even more. If he had come in and said 'It was my hand, I apologise' then I would have only [wanted to] hit him four or five times instead of 20."

The Scotland assistant said he wanted to concentrate on Wednesday's match, and predicted that the home side could cause an upset.

"Scotland have traditionally done well as underdogs against the top sides," he said.

"It is like when teams play the big four down south or the Old Firm in Scotland, you play above yourself because you do not want to get smashed.

"The spotlight is on us at home so we have to adapt with the players we have here. The key thing is adapting quickly and wanting to play on the big stage.

"These are the games that can forge reputations but doing well or scoring a goal; they will remember that for the rest of their lives but other people will remember it too. It is a big thing for the Scotland squad.

"It is not a case of feeling inferior, it is a case of going out and being the ones in the spotlight."

The Irish News reports on loyalist Jackie McDonald's claim that the husband of President Mary McAleese presented him with a fast-tracked Irish passport, so that he would be able to go to a Rangers game during a major loyalist feud.

If this happened in the UK there'd be heads rolling á la Mandelson.   Hasn't caused much of a stir here tho strangely.

GAA star involved in a drunken club brawl

One of the country's leading GAA players has been involved in a drunken row at a busy Dublin club in which a man suffered a suspected broken nose, the Sunday Tribune can reveal.

The player, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is accused of punching a nightclub patron in the nose after being insulted with the comment, "show me your All-Ireland medals".

The incident happened shortly before midnight on Friday 24 October in a well known nightclub on Dublin's Harcourt Street.

The GAA star plays for a prominent club and is a regular with his county team. It is believed he spent the afternoon drinking in a number of pubs and then went to the club to meet his girlfriend.

When the man arrived, he was greeted by the alleged assault victim and words were exchanged. Sources close to the GAA player said that he had previously been insulted by the man about his county's lack of success on the pitch and there was bad blood between the pair.

The injured party is understood to have tripped and fallen into the player's girlfriend. The player then threw one punch, striking the man on the nose.

The GAA star then left the nightclub with his girlfriend. He has the reputation of being a quiet individual and has never been in trouble before. However, he had consumed a significant amount of alcohol.

The injured party returned to the nightclub the following day to make a complaint about the incident.

He indicated he would be filing a garda complaint over the assault. A number of senior garda sources contacted by the Sunday Tribune were aware of the incident.

Attempts to contact the player were unsuccessful and he did not answer repeated messages seeking a response.

Maradona 'set to coach Argentina' - From BBC

Argentina legend Diego Maradona could be set for a sensational return to football after claiming he has been offered the role of national coach.

The 1986 World Cup-winning skipper held talks with the Argentina Football Association (AFA) on Tuesday and is set to continue discussions on Wednesday.

The 47-year-old said: "The offer attracted me a lot. As soon as it is confirmed I will start working."

Maradona has had only two brief spells as a coach in Argentina.

If Maradona does take over he will succeed Alfio Basile, who resigned earlier this month after a World Cup qualifying defeat to Chile.

BBC Sport's South American football reporter Tim Vickery said: "This is all coming from Maradona.

"There is no official word from the AFA yet so it's still early days. But the tide seems to be blowing in his direction.

"He's a religious icon over in Argentina and is a very dangerous force to leave out."

Widely regarded as one of the best players in the history of the sport, Maradona is an iconic figure in Argentina after a remarkable 21-year playing career in which he hit new heights of brilliance on the field and plumbed depths of despair away from the action.

After making his professional debut as a 16-year-old for Argentinos Juniors, he went on to play for his beloved Boca Juniors before spells in Europe with Barcelona, Napoli and Sevilla.

Maradona's unique skills with the ball at his feet made him a superstar, and he is idolised by Napoli fans for almost single-handedly winning the Serie A title and the Uefa Cup for the unfashionable club.

But his most memorable achievements came with the national side - the 1986 World Cup tournament becoming synonymous with his name.

His first goal of the 2-1 win came courtesy of an outrageous handball which he later described as "the hand of God"; but the second is said by many to be the best goal ever scored as he danced past five England players before poking the ball past Peter Shilton.

But Maradona's life away from football has been anything but straightforward, with a long-running addiction to cocaine undermining his genius.

The second failed drugs of his career saw him sent home from the 1994 World Cup in disgrace, and since retiring at the age of 37, Maradona has suffered numerous health problems.

Battles with his drug addiction, alcoholism and obesity saw him suffer a heart attack in 2004 which put him in intensive care, while a later stomach-stapling operation saw him lose 30kg (66 lbs) of excess weight.

Maradona is a virtual novice in coaching terms, with just short spells with Argentine clubs Deportivo Mandiyu and Racing Club in the 1990s on his CV.

But with his health largely restored, Maradona now looks set to take the reins as coach of the national team.

Carlos Bilardo, who coached the winning side in 1986, was involved in the talks with AFA president Julio Grondona and is likely to be part of Maradona's coaching set-up.

Noray Nakis, the president of the AFA selection commission, has already stated his wish, saying: "I'd like Maradona to be the next coach."

Maradona was thought to be on a shortlist with former Boca Juniors coach Carlos Bianchi, San Lorenzo coach Miguel Angel Russo and Sergio Batista, who took the Under-23 squad to Olympic gold in Beijing in Augus
