Title: Each Counties Last Appearance in an All Ireland Semi Final
Post by: SouthOfThe Bann on March 05, 2024, 03:17:46 PM
Since Roscommon last made an All-Ireland Semi Final in 1991 I have counted 20 of the 31 competing counties on this island have made an All-Ireland Semi Final. Astonishing stat if correct. For a proud football county who compete well at provincial and league level why do they under perform so badly on the main stage.

Below is the year each side last played in an All Ireland Semi. I am open to correction on any of these.

ULSTER
1.   Armagh - 2005
2.   Down - 2010
3.   Donegal - 2014
4.   Derry - 2023
5.   Cavan - 2020
6.   Monaghan - 2023
7.   Tyrone - 2021
8.   Fermanagh - 2004

CONNACHT
9.   Galway - 2022
10.   Mayo - 2021
11.   Leitrim - 1994

MUNSTER
12.   Kerry - 2023
13.   Cork  - 2012
14.   Tipperary - 2020
15.   Clare - 1992

LEINSTER
16.   Dublin - 2023
17.   Meath – 2009
18.    Kildare – 2010
19.   Offaly - 1997
20.   Wexford – 2008

TEAMS WHO HAVE NOT MADE ALL IRELAND SEMIS IN THAT PERIOD AND YEAR OF LAST APPEARANCE
1.   Antrim - 1951
2.   Sligo - 1975
3.   Roscommon - 1991
4.   Laois - 1946

Fairly good record there for the Ulster teams. Bit depressing from an Armagh pov but overall Ulster have 8 representatives in the 21st century and 4 in the 2020's. Hopefully we can add to it this year.

Armagh haven't won an Ulster from 2008, so that is probably an indicator of why they haven't made that stage of the championship, they just weren't at that level.

Donegal would be the most surprising of that list, given they were constantly competing at near the top past their last entry of 2014.

Meath/Kildare a bit of a strange one also, I would have thought they would have made that stage, but then I suppose Dublin dominating Lenister means they are pitted against a Provincial winner in the QF's if they make the Leinster final.

Interesting reading that is!

Imagine how a hurling list would read... (Granted structures slightly different now but still)

The comparison isn't standardised. Tipp and Cavan won provincial finals during Covid and went straight to the semi. Sligo, Westmeath  and Ros have won provincial titles in the last 20 years and not reached semi finals because of the qualifiers.

It could be a big deal for a smaller county but there are no prizes for getting to semi finals. It can often come down to the luck of the draw in a cup competition. The only metric should be when your county last actually won an AI title.

That's true. The OP for whatever reason seems to have a strange obsession with Roscommon.

2004 was a heady year in Fermanagh. A semi-final replay kept the drama going.

The knock out championship in 2020, beaten by Cork.

The consistently weaker  football counties, the ones who prop up Divison 4, are a mixture of small counties with rushes and counties with good farmland who concentrate on hurling

The last 20 years are not a great dataset for All Ireland semis because from around 2013 on it was often Mayo, Kerry, Dublin and Tyrone.

The 90's was  probably the greatest  era for football(and hurling ),.

8 different AI  winners in 10 years.  Two new winners,  11 different finalists,  17 different provincial winners/semi finalists and no one team  dominated.

Amazing that the period immediately after that Armagh dominated Ulster with 7 Ulsters out of 10 from 1999 to 2008.

With their noisy neighbours winning three All Irelands in the same period.

That must annoy Armagh fans.

I think Fermanagh 2004 is more existential in Orange County
