Title: The Open 2017
Post by: Boycey on July 17, 2017, 01:45:09 PM
Almost upon us again, it's definitely one of my favourite sporting events every year.

It's one of the most open Opens  :D I can remember with most bookies going 14/1 the field... I haven't really studied the betting yet but will have a few speculations. I'm not sure what the forecast is but if it's calm I might chance Rory, he's in a similar vein of form as he was the last time he won it when I'd a decent few quid on him at 20s!

Was thinking McIlroy, he hit 3 under on the front 9 on Friday, which shows hes not far of. Think I seen him at 16 this morning. Got Harrington at 50/1. Discount Saturday there and he's in great form.

I'm going with Patrick Reed - 66/1

Not too many have won a major with the form McIlroy has coming into it

I think it's too soon for him. The USPGA is made for him though as can be seen by the very low odds on him. He hasn't got his game going yet as he hasn't played enough competitions and he definitely needs to hang on for a few weekends before I'd be punting him.

Harrington bound to be worth a sneaky bet his form is OK and it's a course that suits him! Sergio I think won't do much more having won the Masters although DJ and Spieth are sure to be there or thereabouts as well.

Looking forward to it as well I'm sick of losing money on golf I might just leave the gambling this time!

Will be there on Saturday and Sunday, and find that the one player I really hope is there is Harrington - have resigned myself to the very real risk that Rory won't even make the cut.

Weather looking a bit showery for those days - a bit far out I know but not looking great for spectators  :(

Let's not have this discussion.

It's the Open Championship because it's the original open championship in golf. It's entitlement, not a sense of entitlement.

Ah no. Let's have it anyway. I'll put the argument for the opposing view. It's another (OK, tiny) example of the cultural imperialism that makes a security guard at Manchester Airport feel free to abuse Irish people on the assumption that the British way of doing things is right by default and the Irish one wrong for the same reason. Even though the truth is the opposite.

Only, in that case, Seanie's wife not being a forelock-tugging peasant who would stand for such shite, the casual assumption of superiority wasn't facilitated by the responding cultural cringe that compels some Irish people to refer to the Irish army, for instance, when they mean the army - our army. Or the mainland, when they mean Great Britain. Or even to think the term 'Great Britian' means that the UK state is great.

There - whooda thunk the name of a golf tournament was related to the behaviour of a security man? Everything's connected.

I'm appalled that someone could think I'm from NI unless you think Ulster and NI are the same thing  ;D.

If I'd put the thread up any other week I probably would have called it 'The British Open 2017' just to distinguish but I think this week it's obvious what I'm talking about. Boylesports have coupons for 'The Open Championship' Sky certainly think that's what it's called, even the US PGA App agrees..

Rory probably calls it the British Open though?

Sky's live show in the afternoons was brilliant yesterday, John Rahm playing out of green side bunker with a 4 iron and Padraig being Padraig.. fantastic entertainment..

I don't think it is being anti-british to suggest that the Open should be called the British Open. This clearly distinguishes it from the US Open.

Yes, when the British Open was first played, there was only one Open. But times change. Stadium names change. Even the name for the Lions has changed.

But there's always a chance and that's the great thing with him. Watching that first video you can see how absorbed in it he is I really like him. His interview with Kimmage along with Shane Lowry was fantastic, Lowry seems to keep his head right.

Not really a fan but you have to hand it to him for sticking with it. He needs a good round this morning and then he'd be right back in it. The reason people always give him a chance despite his poor form is that he's devastatingly good when on song and they know it will turn at some point. Maybe this is the point.

It's a serious blowy day, if these guys are supposed to have the best of it it's gonna be tough in the afternoon..

Please please please God reserve the worst weather for Spieth.
+1

Fingers crossed the back 9 goes well for Rory and I get to see him play tomorrow and not at the crack of dawn.

Might be a bad teetime today then for Harrington to make up enough ground to make the cut, if the weather's going to get worse.

He is just top ten in every category, or usually is, McIlroy as good as he is sometimes finds himself top ten in driving accuracy, sand saves etc but when it comes to putting he drifts in and out of the top fifty and higher, Spieth does not do that, his consistency in stats are remarkable and he has no real weaknesses to speak of, that is what makes him great.

A load of shite stew, Spieth drifts in an out of form like the rest of them, he was 146th in greens in regulation last season for instance. There are currently 4  golfers Spieth, McIlroy, Johnson and Day who are capable of operating on a different level than the rest of the field when they're on fire trying to paint one as great is  a pointless exercise.

For whatever reason though their 'A' games haven't collided yet its going to be a hell of a tournament when 2 or 3 of them go down the back 9 in a shootout. It could happen in the USPGA maybe....

Depends on your perspective.

Augusta has marketed itself to be the one course that everyone absolutely wants to play.

Buy those 75 extra years of history, plus the fact that it's played on links courses, gives the Open something that no other golf tournament ever will.

Lads, why do people involve in golf insist on using the word 'golf' before the other nouns related to the game. I've never seen any other sport do it as much.

It's always a fantastic 'golf course'. The 17th is a spectacular 'golf hole'. And Rory hit a wonderful 'golf shot' as he mastered the 'golf ball'.

Would there be confusion if it was a fantastic course, a spectacular hole and a wonderful shot with the ball?

I know Speith used the rules to his maximum advantage to get the most advantageous drop on 13th. However that aside I was always taught there was a spirit to the rules of golf. I would go as far to say he was allowed to break that spirit. Surely the powers that be need to look at the way the pros get these drops in tournament play. I remember D.Johnson getting a free drop from thick US Open rough last year because a tv tower was in his line of sight. He proceeded to drop the ball on an adjacent fairway and hit over the tower onto the green. Could they not make all the trappings that go with tv coverage part of the course. They are already getting an advantage of trampled down rough in many cases as it is. I think the less opportunity they have to put their hand on the ball in open play the better. This rant aside glad to say I had Speith and Kuchar both done e/w.

The crux of the bolded is that the rules of golf do not exist to solely be used to disadvantage a player. There are usually options in any given rule and you are allowed to use them to your advantage. Using a rule to your advantage is not against the spirit of the game or the rules.

The annoying thing for me as a fan of McIlroy is that he can have the longest drive in the field, and leaves himself with a sand wedge into the green, but he will still hits it 15 or 20 yards from the pin. Hell, I can do that.

Im not suggesting the rules should disadvantage a player. However in the 3 options he had he clearly was allowed to bend the rule keeping the ball, its original position and the flag in a straight line. If he wants to drop the ball in between the trucks then play it from there after. I am suggesting the rule is imo wrong as it stands and thus is against the spirit it was intended in. And dont get me started on the length of time he takes generally :)

That's true. The 'Football Club' does seem to be a term widely used. But you rarely hear about the 'Football', the 'Football Pitch' or the 'Football Stadium'. And you never hear that was a fantastic Football Shot :)

You seem to have forgotten the US college football - the coaches especially fond of the "football team".  Lou Holtz especially.

How is the rule wrong? He took his drop as per the rules and got relief due to the trucks being a temp immovable obstruction on the course.

I know the rules but I dont believe this rule is within the spirit of the game. He clearly got to play from a more advantgeous spot. Either the trucks/tv towers/grandstands etc become part of the course or out of bounds as that range probably would be on most courses. It will never happen though, same way the final group in a major will never be penalised for slow play

The Range is not out of bound for members usually so wasn't considered out of bounds for the Championship either which is fair enough!

I don't think Spieth, or Johnson in the case also mentioned did anything against the spirit of the rules but what probably shouldn't have happened yesterday was the length of time that elapsed while the situation was going on. It clearly wasn't fair on his opponent to have to stand around for 20 mins. Spieth had the time to unscramble his head rather than having to play on straight away. I'd say Spieth probably knew exactly what he was doing and fair play to him it's something Tiger would have done in his pomp it was up to the officials to speed things up..

Screen. Granted the range maybe in bounds normally but it is the way these pros get drops away from all the associated trappings of tv coverage spectating etc that doesnt sit comfortably with me. That is why they should look at making these either part of the course or OB.
Boycey. Speith stated himself someting to the effect he was happy the way he handled the situation in terms of taking his time. Or poor ettiquette if you prefer! Again nothing will be done to stop slow play bar the odd "hurry it up lads"from the officials.

Unfortunately - your only recourse is to buy a DeLorean and scoot back in time to when things were different and we didn't have tv towers and trucks and grandstands etc...  :)

Sprinkler heads, power boxes, cart paths, concession stands at the turn are all only adding to complicate the rules. Sometimes they help, sometimes they don't. Depends on your perspective. If I get to take my penalty drop from a bush onto a cart path and then use the free relief from said cart path to bring me back onto the course side of the course (i.e. out of the shit on the other side of the cart path), then I don't consider that to be against the spirit of the game or the rules. I've paid my penalty with the unplayable lie rule when I take my drop so at that moment in time that rule has passed and my ball is back in play. Now I get to avail of another rule which entitles me to my stance and swing cart path relief. If I was smart enough to ensure that the course side of the cart path is my closest point of relief - then bingo.

There will be days when the option to replay the shot will trump the entry point line and distance choice, and days when the entry point and distance choice will trump replaying it, or taking 2 club lengths.

Aye back in time to an age of

No range finders
A single 150 to the middle stone if you were lucky
Woods that stopped at 5
Irons that started at 1

Now that was a game. :)
