The quota results from the total (number of the votes) divided by (seats+1)+1. But the tallies are estimates as you go along, they may be fairly close or may not depending on the quality and number of those taking the tallies.

Tallies are for election geeks who can't wait for the final result. They also help parties see where their vote is, where they could do better etc.

The first step in the count process is to count the number of ballot papers. When you open a ballot box they want to confirm that the number of papers in the box matches the number of ballot papers handed out at that location.

In Ireland the papers are counted face up which means the observers that the parties have in the count location are able to see how people have been voting.They are so well practiced at that they are able to give very accurate tallies of the amount of first preference votes each candidate received. They also have at least some idea of how the transfers are going but the level of accuracy for that is much less.

Appreciate the explanations, seemed like a lot of excitement are something that wasn't official. But as ye say, they are that good at it, they won't be far wrong

The big stage of a general election suits Mary Lou. She is an excellent campaigner and gets a good few blows in during debates. However Pearse Doherty's fine result in Donegal probably ensures he will be new leader in the near future. That said, I don't think he'll have the same impact as a leader as Mary Lou. She definitely made her mark. Could she do a Hail Mary and offer FF 4 years as Taoiseach versus Simon Harris insisting on a rotating Taoiseach? Depends on the gaps between parties.
