Quote from: Rossfan on December 03, 2024, 01:31:39 PMNobody hates them, unless you're from the Hand, Clerkin, Stack, Kelly, Sheehan, Ryan, McCabe, Oliver families among others.

As for me I don't like their
holier than thou preaching of schoolmistress McDonald,
Unashamed populism,
Cut taxes and increase spending
Economic illiteracy
Their unashamed grab for fascist transfers in their manifesto
And while Clare Kerrane seems a fine person there are some total scumbags among their numbers

I Take it you don't vote FF or FG on account of their connections to deaths in the civil war? Or is that past the expiry date and then it's okay?
Provos murdered servants of this State.
They were supposed to be fighting the "British war machine"
That's why a lot of people don't like them in the 26.

PS I certainly don't want to live in Bunker's United Ireland.

Quote from: 03,05,08 on December 03, 2024, 01:11:17 PMWhy do certain people in the south hate SF? They've never been in government to even justify the level of vitriol of some people. Is it the media bias? Or is it the fact they are connected to the north?

Had great admiration for them a decade or so ago. The last 5 years they joined the mainstream, ran with the herd. They provided no opposition and look now to be a worse option to FFG. And that's bad. The United Ireland they want is not the United Ireland I'd want.
Not saying I disagree with you but times change and so too everyone with it or get left behind. The Ireland we grew up in has changed immeasurably and if there is to be a united Ireland, expect it to be very different to what you might have envisioned. It will be shaped by our grandchildren and the grandchildren of unionists. And it might be no harm their views be very different to ours.

Mary Lou got 11,223 first preference in 2020. She got 6,389 in 2024.

That's a loss of 5k votes! She got 57% of the vote of her previous run out.

Last time around she had nearly two quotas.

She has lost her mojo in her electoral area.

She does not represent a vast majority of them anymore.

A second SF candidate this time around, and Hutch account for most of that drop ;D   To be fair Hutch's vote may have hurt Janice Boylan more than ML.

2nd person elected in that area in 2020 was Neasa Hourigan (GP) and got 3851 number 1 votes.  The Hutch wasn't far off that total this time on 3,098.

Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

Correct me if I'm wrong Rossfan, but did the founders of Fianna fall not literally assassinate the president of Ireland? Oh pre 1969 my bad...

Don't know how they know. But it was reported that up to 1,200 that voted for Hutch - voted for the first time.

Mary lou got 878 in transfers from her SF running mate Boylan. That still leaves a 4k drop in the SF vote.

RTE did a bit on transfer patterns across the Big 3.

The Exit poll also had breakdown of demos. Might be off a slight bit given active they under estimated FF support and overestimated SF. Even so, SF have stronger support in younger demos.

The collapse of the greens is to be expected. They knew they had limited time in government and wrung as much reform out of the system as they could while they had the chance. A lot of their reforms are like the smoking ban - unpopular at the time, accepted as normal later. They'll be back when people come to realise they were right all along.

A fair few also leave with Ministerial Pensions, which will lighten the fall.

It always amazes me how women seem to blame men for women not getting elected. They do know women have been allowed to vote since 1918? And there are as many of them as men in Ireland?

Looks like they have finally sorted a government.

https://www.rte.ie/news/politics/2025/0114/1490626-ireland-politics/

QuoteTwo Independent TDs will attend Cabinet meetings as super junior ministers under an agreement reached to pave the way for the formation of the next government.
The Regional Independent Group will have two ministers at the Cabinet table, but they will not hold senior ministries.
It is likely that these posts will go to Galway East TD Seán Canney and Galway West TD Noel Grealish.
Seven TDs from the Regional Independents are set to support the next government as part of an agreement with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.
Meanwhile, Independent TDs Michael and Danny Healy-Rae have also reached an agreement to support the incoming government.
Tonight they are only saying "job done" and will reveal more details of their agreement early tomorrow.
The Cabinet breakdown will see Fianna Fáil hold eight senior roles to Fine Gael's seven.
It is expected that Micheál Martin will hold the office of Taoiseach until some point in 2027 and possibly for a longer duration than the Fine Gael leader...

I am glad none of the left wing parties are involved, make FF/FG plus assorted Independents own it and hopefully present a left wing alternative at the next election (though I am not confident that that the various left wing parties can be that coordinated).
