General discussion / Re: General Election 2024

Quote from: Harold Disgracey on December 02, 2024, 10:12:13 PMSo it'll be FF/FG and 2 easily bought independents? Boxer Moran and who else?
I would rather see that than have one of the smaller left wing parties join and get wiped out at the next election. Labour twice, and now the Greens have suffered big losses after being junior government partners.

The left wing parties need to cooperate at least a bit in opposition to show that they are a viable alternative next time up. They should also propose popular amendments to the government bills so that they can get FF/FG on record opposing them.

Quote from: andoireabu on November 30, 2024, 06:01:57 PMWhat are the tallies about if not the first preference votes? Is it how they work out the quota?
The first step in the count process is to count the number of ballot papers. When you open a ballot box they want to confirm that the number of papers in the box matches the number of ballot papers handed out at that location.

In Ireland the papers are counted face up which means the observers that the parties have in the count location are able to see how people have been voting. They are so well practiced at that they are able to give very accurate tallies of the amount of first preference votes each candidate received. They also have at least some idea of how the transfers are going but the level of accuracy for that is much less.

No real weak links in Pot 2 so it will be tough enough to get a top 2 position.

Quote from: Gabriel_Hurl on November 21, 2024, 05:38:03 PMWell Gaetz is out as a potential AG pick
This is a very disappointing decision, I had hoped that we would have a long drawn out circus with this nomination.
Never mind, there are still plenty of other clowns.

Have started watching "Say Nothing" based on the book about the Disappeared (Jean McConville etc.). It is on Hulu here in the US. It is not a documentary but a drama focusing mostly on the Price Sisters.
OK so far.
There is a disclaimer at the end of each episode "Gerry Adams has always denied being a member of the IRA or participating in any IRA-related violence"

Age does give you wisdom and a scepticism of easy solutions.
Or they are just voting for the parties that they voted for all their lives.

RFK Jr in charge of HHS.

Words fail.
Trump is a genius, he keeps making each pick crazier than the previous one so we forget how crazy the previous picks were.

Next MTG, Boebert and Alex Jones.

So it looks like the excess deaths started before vaccines were available. That won't stop the anti-vaxxer loons blaming the vaccines.
