General discussion / Soccer Fans Survey/Logo Quiz
May 13, 2014, 12:01:50 PM
I decided to post a new thread at the risk of getting some backlash.
I am a sports masters student studying the effect sports games have on fans.
I would really appreciate people filling out this survey. We have made it fun with a few logo and trivia questions involved.

General discussion / The Hypocrisy of Women
August 28, 2011, 12:07:45 PM
Was watching a video on youtube today and as annoyingly happens these days an ad plays before the real video and it was for its4women.ie comes up - advertising insurance for woman only.
Now even though they are probably getting cheaper insurance that men on this site, I couldn't give a fiddlers, what annoys me is that if there was a site advertising insurance for men only, or if there were men-only gyms etc, there would be uproar from women - see the court case over Portmarnock GC.
And can you imagine the uproar if the insurance or the gyms for men were cheaper than those that the women could go to?

Quote20 May 2011

Chris O'Connor and Mickey Burke have been recalled to the Meath football panel by manager Seamus McEnaney.

The defensive duo were released from the Royals' championship squad along with forward Peadar Byrne at the beginning of the month, but have been invited back and are expected to feature in tonight's challenge match against Westmeath in Rosemount (throw-in 7.30pm).

There are also unconfirmed reports that retired duo Graham Geraghty - who manages Rosemount's neighbouring club Castledaly - and Darren Fay could feature in the game against Pat Flanagan's men. Both men retired from inter-county football a couple of seasons ago and it would be a sensational development if they were to play tonight.

There was surprise when O'Connor and Burke were let go, given that both had been regulars in the Meath defence under former Eamonn O'Brien. Longwood clubman Burke was first-choice centre back at the start of last year's championship, only for his season to be cut short when he suffered a broken leg against Laois in the Leinster SFC quarter-final replay in Tullamore.

Aparently Geraghty and Fay coming back in not a rumour. Anyone hear anything on it?

Hurling Discussion / Andrew O Shaughnessy retires
April 28, 2011, 12:14:46 PM
http://www.sportsnewsireland.com/gaa/andrew-oshaughnessy-retires-from-hurling/

QuoteLimerick hurler Andrew O'Shaughnessy has announced his retirement from the inter-county game.

The Kilmallock clubman was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2009, and while he has continued to feature on the senior team,he has failed to hold down a regular place. He played in the early rounds of this year's league, but has decided that the time is right to move on.

The 27-year-old had a huge reputation as an underage player and made his name in colleges hurling with St. Colman's, Fermoy. O'Shaughnessy was still a teenager when he made his Limerick senior debut as a substitute in an All-Ireland qualifier clash against Cork in 2002.

He was the star man in Limerick's season as they reached the 2007 All-Ireland final, and while they were well beaten on the day, O'Shaughnessy won an All-Star award later that year.

He has scored 8-102 in his 33 championship appearances for Limerick. O'Shaughnessy made the announcement of his decision on Limerick's Live 95FM this morning and added that while he was retiring from the inter-county game he would continue to hurl with his club.

General discussion / Insoles
November 05, 2008, 01:16:45 AM
Lads, anyone wear insoles for sport? Trying to find out if they are worth investing in. My local physio either swears by them or else he's trying to screw everyone that comes into him for €300. THe test he does is where you walk on this board with sensors on it and a reading comes up on his computer screen. That might be all be well and good but for sport, surely the test should be done when you are running? I have talked to people who say their insoles have cured their back ailments etc but the jury is out for me.

Has anyone every had this? It has been bothering me for about four months now. When I am training regularly, its very sore, unable to kick or run at any pace. It warms up after a while and goes away almost completely but then gets gets sorer after. When I take difene it goes away but i dont want to be taking it for prolonged period and i'm worried that I am just covering up a problem. Rest relieves it but once I go back trianing it fires up again.
Anyone ever dealt with this?

Well looks like we're all fucked, ecomony gone to crap, unemployment, emigration, first time since 1983. So says an ESRI report anyway.
I cant wait till its over so I can say 'the kids of today dont know what its like to live through the hard times'

After training in the evenings, its usually about 10 by the time I get home, after a feed and a read of the papers or whatever, I scale the stairs at 11 or so and am usually asleep by 11.30. I get up at 6.30am. I am usually wrecked halfway through the day, eyelids dropping, no concentration. I don't drink tea or coffee and would be wary of anything like red bull to keep me going. Is anyone in the same boat?

The tribune did a thing a while ago where they picked a team of all stars 5 years in the future. Would be interesting to see what people think. My team is only off the top of my head, so I will probably leave out a fair few gems. It will be interesting reading in 5 years time!

4. Kieran Gavin (Westmeath)
5. Cahir Healym(Laois)
6. John O Loughlin (Laois)
7. Gary White (Kildare)
8. Eamon Fennell (Dublin)
9. Sean Cavanagh (Tyrone)
10. Ramie Mulgrew (Tyrone)
11. Declan O Sullivan (Kerry)
12. Bernard Brogan (Dublin)
13. Colm Cooper (Kerry)
14. Shane O Rourke (Meath)
15. Seanie Johnson (Cavan)

QuoteMartin Johnson has been appointed England team manager.
England's 2003 World Cup-winning captain will take charge from 1 July this year, having secured a deal until 31 December, 2011.

The Rugby Football Union management board unanimously approved Johnson's appointment following an meeting at Twickenham today.

Brian Ashton ceases to be England head coach, and has been offered a role as head coach of the RFU's national academy.

There is no news at this stage whether or not 61-year-old Ashton, who took charge of England for 22 Tests and led them to last autumn's World Cup final, will accept Twickenham's offer.

The RFU say 38-year-old Johnson will report to their elite rugby director Rob Andrew, and will have 'full managerial control' of the England team.

Andrew, meanwhile, is to be England's team manager for the Barbarians clash at Twickenham on 1 June, and the two-Test tour of New Zealand later that month.

Existing forwards coach John Wells and defence coach Mike Ford - Ashton's lieutenants this season - are to remain in their posts.

The coaching team for England's two-Test New Zealand trip has been confirmed as Wells, Ford, Graham Rowntree and Jon Callard.

Johnson said: 'It is a great honour for me to be offered this position.

'I am passionate about the England team and delivering success for it.

'While I cannot take up my position until July 1 for personal reasons (Johnson's wife Kay is pregnant) I will be working closely with Rob and the England coaching team on selection for the Barbarians match and the New Zealand tour, as well as selecting the first senior elite player squad of 32 under the new agreement between the RFU and Premier Rugby.'

Bit crazy no? I think the French did something similar.

General discussion / Heath Ledger found dead

Not many details about it, found dead in his Manhattan apartment, possibly drug related. Sad news, a good up and coming actor, played the role of joker in The Dark Night, the new batman film due to be released next year.
