How many 'gave up' soccer, or did they have it forced on them (at the level mentioned here)?

Arsene Wenger regrets bitterly that he didn't have the services of Geraghty to complement his other blond bombshell,Denis Bergkamp. One can only marvel at the sacrifices of the likes Niall Morgan, exchanging the glamour of Dungannon Swifts for the anonymity of Tyrone GAA

Cian Mackey played with Monaghan Utd and was then offered a full time deal by Cork City in 07 but turned it down due to the Gaelic. Spent a season with Armagh City in the Irish League too.

Donegal's David Walsh was with Luton Town in his youth.

A few Donegal players have had spells with Finn Harps: Brendan Devenney, Declan Bonner and (I think) Barry McGowan.

Packie Bonner lined out at midfield in the county colours in his youth. Declan Boyle played some intercounty in the early 90s before heading to Celtic and then a long League of Ireland career.

Brendan Murphy - goalkeeper for Meath and formerly Wimbledon.
Gary Rogers - goalkeeper for Meath and various (nearly every?) League of Ireland soccer club.
Ger Robinson - forward for Meath and formerly Middlesbrough (reserves).
Darragh McNamara - forward for Meath Juniors and formerly Drogheda United (a.k.a. the dregs).

Xabi Alonso, (Real Madrid and Spain) played football at club level with Kells but never made the grade at county level. He does still shout for Meath, but finds it hard to get to O'Byrne Cup and league matches during the soccer season.

Surely, Con Martin would be in the back 4.  Val Harris won an All Ireland with Dublin before playing for Liverpool and Ireland.  Both have stronger credentials than a few of your team/

Think O' Sullivan was only with QPR up to u12 level. That's when the family moved back to Kerry.

I remember Houlie playing for Ards ( I think). In an interview he said he was only playing the soccer to keep himself fit for GAA. Or so I was told. Did not stay there long funny enough.

Houlie skipped an FAI Cup Final appearance and winners medal with Sligo Rovers in the early 90s to play for Armagh in the first round of the Ulster Championship.

#To bracket Bonner & Given with Jennings (world legend) betrays a curiously Irish myopic view of things. Quite simply different class.

I bracketed them as any one of the three could be goalkeeper on this mythical team.It was not a comment or otherwise on the respective merits of the three as goalkeepers.Jennings was clearly a class above the other two in that regard.

God you have to love the '90's the decade where Graham Geraghty, Anthony Tohill and Jason Sherlock got Trials with English Soccer Clubs. We were told that the clubs could not get over the fitness of these specimens who were amateurs. They were fitter than the professionals over there.  All newspaper stuff. The lads got a trial like hundreds of other up and coming lads, were not good enough to make it like hundreds of other up and coming lads and went back home. No shame in that, just not the big deal that a trial often is spun as. Still you hear it after a GAA player uses some sort of soccer 'Skill' 'Oh you know he had trials with QPR'.
