The Insider

Latest news from the world of Longford GAA is that planning permission has come through over the Christmas for the development in Lyneen . So full steam ahead for the training center Work on pitch's should start before end of March, all going well should be open for the summer of 2014. Don't know of any extra conditions attached to the planning by an Bord Pleanna but cant see anything to stop the development now. Co board have rented a property in GEM park and converted it into a gym for all panels and are also paying for improvements to Shroids pitch for use of county squads over the cominig 3 years

OK, time to take off the coversheets, sweep away the cobwebs, and see what the rest of the summer will bring us.

Senior and Intermediate Championships start next weekend. Three rounds of randomly-drawn matches in the Senior (four in the Intermediate), with the top 8 going through to the quarter finals, and three of the remaining four being relegated to Intermediate for next year.

Senior matches:

Longford Slashers v Killoe, Fri, 8.15.
Granard v Ballymahon, Sat, 6.30.
Abbeylara v Fr Manning Gaels, Sat, 8.00.
Killashee v Dromard, Sun, 2.00.
Clonguish v Colmcille, Sun, 3.30.
Mullinalaghta v Mostrim, Sun, 6.30.

Slashers and Killoe are probably the main favourites for this, with Clonguish, Abbeylara, Mullinalaghta, Mostrim and maybe Dromard and Colmcille behind them in that order. The first and last matches of the weekend should be the most interesting.

Current odds from Ladbrokes:

Killoe, Slashers 9/4
Clonguish 7/2
Dromard 6/1
Abbeylara, Colmcille, Mullinalaghta 10/1
Mostrim 25/1
Ballymahon 33/1
Fr Manning Gaels, Granard    50/1
Killashee 100/1

Intermediate matches:

Legan 1-6 Rathcline 1-6
Kenagh v Ardagh, Sat, 6.30.
Cashel v Carrickedmond, Sat, 8.00.
Seán Connollys v Ballymore, Sun, 2.00.

I'd make Ardagh marginal favourites for this (they're performing well enough in Division 1 - holding several senior contenders to a couple of points in league matches). Connollys look doomed to Junior.

The Insider

Killoe got out of jail last night, 4 points down 5  mins to go  . Clonguish gave them 2 out of the last 3 scores . Goalie pulled up for hopping the ball twice, and while after giving away a free about 45m out some dissent brought the ball in a good 13m making it an easier effort for Sean Mc Cormack . Didn't see what Damian Bennett was sent off for , but umpire seemed definite he deserved one and for once a player seemed to accept the decision

Longfordian

By all accounts our London captain will be back for the Dromard match .....

16's , I'll take that .....considering recent performances and the draw

most of North Longford happy enough with that side of the draw !

Quotemost of North Longford happy enough with that side of the draw !

You'd nearly think the Abbey-Half Parish match was fixed to ensure that draw :P

The Insider

Minor Championship starts tomorrow night , Northern Gaels certain to win title . All interest will be on who gets to meet them . 4 semi finalists should be Northern Gaels and Longford Slashers from group 1 with Killoe topping group 2 if Damien Bennett fit to play. Clonguish Og to face Western Gaels in quarter final which will be a hard one to call based on league form , Western Gaels winning the B on Thursday evening will give them a good game .

Don't be putting the hex on us already...

Good to see Shroid winning a juvenile title last week, both for the sake of the club itself and for the number of surnames on the team that were not obviously Irish in origin.

The Insider

St Mel's after winning the "C" championship were due to move up to the 13 a side but pulled out . they also struggled to field in a lot of games in both minor and U-16 . They don't field at U-14. Their biggest problem is the location of their pitch at the outskirts of the parish of Templemicheal leaves them having to collect players in the town and bring them out for training and games.
tensions rising over the "Lyneen" center of excellence project, which is now in huge doubt . Lots of muck being throw at different promoters and those opposed to it from the beginning. Next county board meeting shall be very interesting. This will be main topic while the appointment of the senior and minor managers will take 2nd place on bill . €70k  spent/wasted depending on which camp your in , and with little chance of achieving purchase price should the land be sold on things will boil up nicely for convention time .
