Something similar coming in in the UK in Oct 2025 I believe.

They pay it into your card, so you might not like it
You pay more up front and then have to trip back to the shop to recycle/refund bottles that the council currently collect from my doorstep :(
Doesn't make sense to me, apart from a feeling that I'm going to get penalised for all the lazy bastatfs who couldn't be arsed putting the right bottle in the right bin currently.

Feel the same makes no sense. My recycle bin is already half full with plastic bottles.
It seems small businesses are at a disadvantage here with these machines , as they cost up to €30,000 .
Hard to compete against the big supermarkets who can afford to install them , and then pick up the trade from those there returning the bottles
We've had it here in New South Wales for a few years now - it's on glass as well, but only up to a certain size. Intended to be only the ones that would often be drunk away from home - they assume the rest would go into recycling anyway. So beer and soft drinks are in but wine bottles and big milk containers are out.
Seems to have reduced litter quite a bit if nothing else.

Here it would have been perfectly reasonable on 500Ml and 750Ml bottles that you use on the move, but it should not have been imposed on 1.5L bottles which mostly go into households and from there into the recycling bin.
What are people's experiences of the scheme so far?
We have very few bottles or cans come into the house so in the main it's fine. But it seems to be a nightmare with people who do have lots. I was heading to LIDL last night, a couple where just ahead of me and thought I was going to the machine. The girl stopped and said do you want to go in front of us, we could be here forever.
Both Tesco and M&S in Newry selling bottles with the logo but not the deposit, so bottle smuggling is the new thing.
It's like anything, the people shouting the loudest just don't like change and offer no alternatives apart from doing the same. Sure weren't bottle banks met with the same resistance. Even listened to one woman on the radio talking about all the driving she was doing every day for returns being worse for the environment. Total guff.
No real issues myself but I know there are a few teething problems. Like you hardly have any cans or bottles to return compared to others.
Had family in visiting there from overseas, brought local delicacies for us to try, think of the air miles on those tray bakes, fecking heathens!
Was passing through Pearse Stadium last Monday and popped in for a look. Clean up from the previous day 20k crowd was going on and The stadium was filled with plastic bottles. I said to one chap they'll be good money made out of all those bottles once recycled? no money made they'll be fcuked into the skip was the answer I got.

Would it not be beneficial if Galway GAA allowed a few kids in after the match to clean up the bottles, and allow them to keep the cash rewards? Everyone's a winner.
