These sporting franchises in American sports, do they still have fans going to the games? Are they popular?

Yes.

The NY Knicks are one of the most valuable of the NBA teams, and have been selling out the Garden for years.

They've been utterly shite for most of the last 20. Owners (the Dolan family, who own Cablevision, a load of tv stations, the NY Rangers and others) don't give a f**k though.

And when a team gets shit and the fans stop coming, the team franchise simply ups and moves to a different place.

Its often used as a bargaining tool to get cities to pay for new stadiums and the likes too.

Looks up the wiki page for many of the teams from out west and see where they started.

The Lakers, for example, don't get their name from any lake in California!

Oakland raiders now the Las Vegas raiders. Wasn't there another sports team from New York that was relocated to Los Angeles?

Dodgers

The San Francisco Giants were originally the New York (Baseball) Giants. They left at the same time as the Dodgers as they needed 2 teams out west for the scheduling to work.

Lots of US teams move, all for $$$$ and they care little about the fans

Oakland raiders to LA then back to Oakland then to Las Vegas since the 80's
Houston Oilers went to Tennessee to become the Titans
Baltimore Colts to Indianapolis, this in turn allowed the Baltimore Ravens to start up a few years later
LA Rams to St Louis back to LA
St Louis Cardinals went to Phoenix to be later called AZ Cardinals

Countless MLB and NBA teams moved including
Dodgers and Giants moved from NY
Athletics went from Phili to Kansas to Oakland
Lakers went from Minneapolis to LA
Warriors from Philli to SF then to Oakland and now back to SF
Seattle Sonics went to Oklahoma Tunder
Charlotte Hornets went to New Orleans
Grizzlies, Kings, Clippers, Jazz all moved

Some folks may be interested in how LA lakers are called Lakers, Utah got the name Jazz etc.
Lakers - Minneapolis to LA
Jazz - From New Orleans to Utah
Cardinals from St Louis to AZ
