Can anyone explain why there is a back door route for minor teams in Leinster and Munster  but not in Ulster?
Careful now

Canalman

Presume the Ulster Council (ie the 9 counties themselves) don't want it. No other reason as far as I can see.
Strictly speaking there is a backdoor for  the losing finalists in Ulster.

ross4life

Same in Connacht apart from the the losing finalists no back door.
The key to success is to be consistently competitive -- if you bang on the door often it will open

Doesn't seem right that there are 2 different systems.

Ulster said NO.

Ther isnt one in Connacht either  - you know the Province whose 2 teams in the All Ireland Series last year bet the 2 Ulster teams in the Qtr Finals. ;) - other than the Finalists get to play in the AI QFs.
Up to each Provincial Council how they run their Championships.

Should be up to Croke Park to at least enforce that if one team gets a second chance everyone else does as well.

Rossfan

Teams in Munster /Leinster can get third chances .
The whole "losers group" thing defies logic altogether - lose Round 1 you get back in , win round 1 and lose round 2 or a semi final and it's out you go. ::)

The Insider

There are rumors about an overhaul of the minor championships coming down the road within a couple of years. Most likely their will be an A and B All Ireland in the football. As long as the present system stays in place the same same 8 or 9 counties will continue to dominate. The other 22 or 23 if you include Kilkenny will become less inclined to put money into their minor teams preparation as before as resources become scarcer and football in theses counties will regress. Can a county like Longford, Carlow  Fermanagh , Antrim,  Leitrim , Waterford ,Clare ever have a chance of winning an All Ireland minor title. I think everyone in Leinster feels that now since Dublin have gotten their act together at under age that if they get over Kildare this year they could go the rest of the decade unbeaten at this level in the province leaving mismatches like some of their results in the province over this and last year. Would assume that the respective leagues would be used in each province to get your championship finalists so they remain attached to the senior provincial final , and a new All Ireland format with 4 groups of 4 with Q/finals with finals attached to the football semi finals.

People vastly over-rate Dublin at under-age. Logistically speaking it's far easier to compete with them at these grades where only people in a one or two year window can compete.

As other counties look into Dublin's conditioning training and start to be become in similar shape the gap, even in Leinster, will be very surmountable.

Many a dynasty has been proclaimed but few have existed.

No one in Dublin "proclaiming a dynasty". Jeez we haven't won an AI minor since 1984.

Who are these "people" you are talking about? Genuinely curious.

This year we got imo our sternest test in the 1st round in Wexford in the U21s where  we could easily have lost.

Onlooker

As canalman says Dublin's last Minor All Ireland win was in 1984 and Kerry's last title was in 1994.  No sign of dynasties there from the 2 most sucessful football counties.  In the 28 years from 1984 to date, 14 different counties have won the All Ireland Minor Football title.  I don't know where Insider gets the idea that "8 or 9 counties" will continue to dominate, when this grade has never been dominated by 8 or 9 counties.  As regards A and B competitions, I don't see this happening and grading counties at Minor level would be impossible IMO.   Tipperary won the All Ireland last year, beating both Kerry and Dublin among others.   With the Insider's proposed system, they would almost certainly  have been playing in the B grade.  Thank God they were not and that they gave this long suffering Tipperary follower and many of my fellow county men our greatest day ever in Croke Park.   There will always be strong and weak counties at all grades, including minor, but if the likes of Laois, Westmeath, Roscommon and Tipp can win Minor All Irelands there is no reason why most other counties can not produce good competitive minor teams in some years and have a good shot at winning provincial or All Ireland success.  Quarter Finals in the Minor Championship were brought in from 2002 and in the 10 years since then, no less than 23 counties have played in All Ireland Quarter Finals.  It is no mean feat to get to an All Ireland Quarter Final and I certainly can not see any need at all to interfere with the Minor Football Championship.

Rossfan

Senior level is more suitable for an A and B Championship.
Minor teams change personnel and potentially standards every year being an age group grade  but a Senior team usually stays around the same level for more than 5 years .

...

Yes. It is not so long ago that Tipperary would have been included in that list

Dublin have good U-10,12,14,16 teams? instead changing the minor championship maybe just look at the Leinster championship as no side from their has won the All Ireland for almost decade now.
