Both teams probably threw away any chance of getting to the AI final last Sunday given the road left to travel now, hard to know which was the worse butchering of the prime position each team was in to top their groups, Mayo's probably a more spectacular collapse but Galway's just as bad really given the context.

we got the worst team out of the hat anyway, Mayo are a really good team and Galway are in serious bother with the injury situation.
If Comer and Kelly are unavailable I don't see how Galway can get a result, they are just too important to the team, along with the underrated McHugh. If Comer plays last Sunday and I think we have the feet up this . Mayo's record in knock out matches between the two counties when it's do or die as well is formidable. Hopefully this match will see Galway making a real stand and not a 2019 like situation.
Regardless, the eternal question remains "will Galway bate Mayo?".

GAA Discussion / Connacht final 2023
May 02, 2023, 05:22:01 PM
Can't see any previous thread on this which says a lot. Galway are 1/50 on and the spread is 12 points. I can't recall any previous Connacht final where Galway were as overwhelming favourites to win, it's highly doubtful the 2000 final versus Leitrim was at those levels with the bookmakers, only final I can recall that might be in the mix.

Haven't done Connacht back to back since 2002/03, which both speaks to the competitiveness of the Rossies and the excellent Mayo team that walked all over Galway and the rest of the province for a long time, while also of course reflecting the absolute circle of hell that Galway football descended into, there were some chastening days including at the hands of Sligo in 2010. Would be a sign of progress to be consistently winning Connacht again but that said, the reputation of the provincial system is in dire order now compared to the start of the noughties.
This Sunday if Galway show up paying full respect to Sligo, going full tilt and playing to potential, they should be winning well I think, although given the draw today there's not exactly a brilliant prize awaiting the Connacht winners.

Is there any potential for a shock result at all?

I don't want to post this in the "More Gaa thuggery" thread where there has already been some discussion about it because for me that's not the place for congratulating all associated with the Clonbur team in Croke park yesterday on their huge achievement in winning the All Ireland junior football final.
For a club that is coping with issues that effect many parts of the country such as emigration and rural depopulation but on an even more severe scale than most the trojan efforts of all club members and the people in the locality to even get to Croke park, nevermind to get the win, is fantastic.

Whatever about the semi final furore, Derrytresk came to play football and will feel unlucky not to have held onto the lead until the 60 minutes were up, they had a very good first half performance when Clonbur played poorly and they should have been up by more at the half. The legs looked gone in the last 15 minutes from the prior efforts however and Clonbur were really on top at that stage, despite several bad wides during the 2nd half they hit the front at the most important time in the game.

The county wins in '98 and '01 were days I didn't think would be bettered but when it's "your own" out on the pitch it's even more emotional and exciting to come out on the right side of it. Thanks for all the support from the Davitts club during the game and commiserations to ye on the intermediate final result.

Nice feeling to be heading west for the home coming celebrations at the minute!

GAA Discussion / Joyce axed from Galway panel

From Hoganstand.com:
Joyce axed from Galway panel

Galway's preparations for their Connacht SFC semi-final against Sligo later this month have been rocked by confirmation that Nicky Joyce has been dropped from the panel.

The highly-rated forward, who is a first cousin of fellow attacker Padraic, was dropped by manager Liam Sammon over the weekend for an alleged breach of discipline.

It remains to be seen if Joyce will be brought back into the panel later in the summer, but as it stands, he won't be involved for the provincial semi-final against Kevin Walsh's Sligo at Markievicz Park on June 28.

Joyce has threatened to emerge as one of the top forwards in the game over the past few years, but a series of injuries have prevented him from doing so.

Any Galway lads have the full story regarding this?

Can't see any other thread on this yet so I may as well kick it off.

Galway are coming into the match off the back of a fairly medicore performance against Westmeath while the Dubs were part of a high standard of football game against Tyrone.
That was on a marquee night in Croke Park with fairly benign conditions and a pitch in great shape for this time of year however, it's safe to say that they will get neither in Salthill.

Cullinane is I assume suspended, the Corofin lads are still out along with Nicky Joyce missing through injury. Probably will see a similar enough team to the one that started against Westmeath.

Also can anyone tell me when was the last time Galway beat Dublin in the league? It's a long time ago but couldn't be any worse than 1934 - the last championship win against the jackeens!

Have we any hope?

Worst draw possible from a Galway point of view, the rest of the qualifier winners are no great shakes, it's the toughest draw we could have got.

I reckon we will win it handy about 4-14 to 1- 13 (if only!!!). I am extremely drunk while posting this message, the Valk in Ballinrobe does that to ya.
