It takes 30 signatures to submit a petition of concern at Stormont.
The DUP have 38 MLAs and the Speaker;
The next biggest party, SF, have 28 members.
How, in the name of god, is this a devolved government, acting on the will of the people?
Same as it ever was....

I was asked this question by my daughter today, and it is impossible to answer, I know, but, I had to give an answer.

So, cut the BS, hang your hat on one song; for me, it has to be a song that you can listen to at any time in any mood without question.

What is the song you hope you are listening to when you are 80 and still full of life?

Everything you want in a song...

I give you Van Morrison, Glad Tidings

General discussion / Jeremy Corbyn
August 15, 2015, 12:02:18 AM
Anyone taking interest in the Labour Party election?
He has fairly got the mini-Blairs running about crapping themselves.
And Blair denouncing Corbyn has to be a fillip for his campaign.
It is interesting to see the same political machines being rolled out as they were before the Scottish referendum.
I think he has it in the bag, and more power to him; it is the first time I have been interested in politics in a long while.

General discussion / A Genius in our Time - Discuss

Just finished watching Django Unchained - surely Tarantino has to be hailed as a genius director?
He has to be up there with the greats.
So, to kick this off, who are the people out there, living now, who will be known in 100 years time (Larry Reilly excluded)?

Is AP McCoy the greatest sportsperson to ever hail from this island?

Clare Balding said this evening that he is the greatest sportsperson she has ever met

I attended the county board meeting on Thursday night and there was the roll-out of a consultative process in Down.
From what I can gather, it is a forum to give everyone a chance to air their view on a way forward for Down football.
The reason I am posting this is that I felt that views from the Gaels on this board would be informative and would give folk who can't make the meetings listed to have a say.
If there are gaaboard members who would like to contribute on this board, I will pass on the link - don't know if it will be considered but there you go.

Again, in reply to a past quote from Leo, I would like to stress that I have no connection to the county board and was merely representing our club at the meeting - it's just that some of the views on this Down GAA thread hold a lot more weight, and make more sense than some of the stuff I hear and read. And so, I thought I would open it up to yis. Please see detail below:

I am starting this thread through sheer selfishness; I have reached the age where I can no more 'vet' 10 different bands from the same genre

and age, and decide who is the best - just haven't the time or patience.

So, requesting a dig out on this one - I have been a lifelong fan of Echo & The Bunnymen, and always thought of listening to The Jesus and Mary Chain, but never did.

Heard one of their songs (The Hardest Walk) on a compilation and really liked it.

So the request - recommend a Jesus and Mary Chain Album; not looking for their roots or their alternative stuff, but, as the hacks call it, their seminal album.

(Also interested in same for The Pixies - could never get into them at all, even though I was introduced to 'Trompe le Monde' in the early 90's - any recommendations welcome.)

General discussion / Worst Job Ever?
March 04, 2011, 12:08:59 AM
I visited a factory yesterday which took in the crud and leftovers from the adjacent meat factory and compressed it, seperated the blood from the pulp, and cooked the pulp to produce oil and tallow.

The guy I visited was the lead fitter in the place - last week, the hydraulics of the 'hopper' (the bunkers where the carcasses go initially) broke down. He had to get into the middle of it to fix the problem. Took him three hours to fix.

He was an absolute Gentleman, very clued in, knew the systems inside out - working 7 days a week in fat and stench. He was telling me he has to go home early from nights out with the wife because he starts to sweat the smell of the factory.

I can't in this day and age, think of a worse job - or does anyone know worse than this?
