General discussion / Internet forum database 'hacked'

Internet forum database 'hacked'

Irish internet forum Boards.ie has reported an attack on its user database which could affect thousands of users. In a statement it confirmed that "an unauthorised source" from outside Ireland accessed its database server. It urged members who use the same username/email and password on other sites to change passwords. "Part of the database which includes our members' usernames, email addresses and obfuscated passwords was accessed," Boards.ie said on its homepage. The site started life as a forum for the computer game Quake in 1998 and has more than 500 forums on a range of topics. According to the most recent ABC internet traffic statistics in November, Boards.ie had more than 20m page views, averaging more than 1.1m page views a day. Tom Murphy, co-founder of Boards.ie said, in a statement, that like all large sites they were "regularly the target for disruption and take continual actions to proactively protect data". He said that the attack was "was completely unprecedented despite our rigorous security measures and while we have no idea if this data will be used for any malicious reasons, we felt it vital to tell you this immediately".
Boards.ie says it is changing all user passwords and has notified Irish police, the Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes and an independent security consultant. Mr Hawkes said the attack should be taken as a warning to internet users to create different passwords for different websites. He said his office would be investigating the security breach but he praised the company for pulling the website immediately and alerting its members. The site has been posting updates on Twitter, with a tweet telling users Boards.ie would "hopefully" be back on Friday morning.

 Casement upgrade proposed by GAA

Ulster GAA bosses are proposing that Casement Park should be upgraded to become the premier gaelic games venue in the province with a 40,000 capacity.

Following Sports Minister Gregory Campbell's decision to abandon the Maze project, he asked the three main sporting bodies to submit their ideas.

The GAA gave its proposals to the minister earlier this week.

The ball is now in the court of government as public money would be required to upgrade Casement.

Last month, the sports minister confirmed the widespread speculation that he had decided not to proceed with the Maze Stadium project.

Mr Campbell said the plan was not value for money and did not have political consensus.

The minister added that he intended to help the Irish Football Association, Ulster Rugby and the GAA to develop solutions to their stadia needs and the three sporting bodies were all asked to come up with proposals.

Ulster GAA bosses have moved quickly to submit their proposals although government's reaction remains to be seen.

Earlier this week, a business consortium, Eastonville Traders Ltd, proposed the building of a new stadium for football and rugby in the Sydenham area of east Belfast.

It said the arena would have a 20,000-capacity and would be built on a 90-acre site beside the Danny Blanchflower Stadium, but would not host GAA fixtures.

However, Ulster Rugby said it is not committed "in any way" to the proposed new stadium in east Belfast.

Ulster Rugby added that the lack of "any appropriate business case" meant it does not form part of its plans to develop stadia for the sport.

The IFA said it would welcome any proposals "provided the finances stack up".

Ferguson sacked as manager after Home Mauling

January 25, 2009 · By Editor · Filed Under Stranraer, Transfers
Stranraer have announced that they have parted company with manager Derek Ferguson following their 8-2 home defeat to Stirling Albion yesterday. "Following today's disastrous result Stranraer manager Derek Ferguson has left the club by mutual consent," read a statement on the club's website. Stranraer are currently bottom of the Second Division, seven points behind nearest rivals Arbroath who have plyed a game more.

Ferguson had only been in charge at Stair Park for little less than a year, after a brief spell as player manager of Clydebank. The Clayholers lost in last season's play-off final against Arbroath but were allowed to retain their Second Division status following the demise of Gretna. This season, Stranraer have recorded only two league wins and amidst financial turmoil at the club with chairman Nigel Redhead stating that Stranraer have a 50/50 chance of staying in business until the end of the season, with around  £250,000 worth of debt.

Meanwhile French midfielder Gregory Tade has left Stranraer and completed his move to Clyde. Tade joined Stranraer in 2007 from Forfar Athletic and featured in 61 matches, scoring 22 goals. He enjoyed a winning debut for the Bully Wee in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Ross County. As part of the deal, Stephen Connolly and Jordan Murch have gone out on loan to struggling Stranraer until the end of the current season. Connolly and Murch both featured in Stranraer's 8-2 hammering at home to Stirling Albion.

General discussion / Adams has gone away you know

Tony that is!

Adams set to make Portsmouth exit

Portsmouth are to announce on Monday that they have parted company with boss Tony Adams after just over three months in charge, BBC Sport understands. Portsmouth have won just two of their 16 Premier League matches since Adams, 42, took charge back on 28 October. On Saturday his side were beaten by Liverpool after having led 2-1 with just five minutes to go in the match.  Prior to Saturday's loss - the seventh in eight games - Adams had insisted he had the backing of the club chiefs. Portsmouth are currently 16th in the table, one point above the relegation zone, with 14 games to play. Adams was appointed at the end of October when Harry Redknapp, who guided Pompey to FA Cup glory last season, decided to take the Tottenham job. He was named as Redknapp's number two in 2006, after an ill-fated spell in charge of Wycombe and coaching jobs in the Netherlands with Feyenoord and Utrecht. At Wycombe, the Arsenal legend won only 12 of his 53 games in charge, losing 20.
