QuoteHegan, do you think I need to feed my mind?

surely thats what the board is for?

Just pointing out that it takes a while to get out of the habit of snacking, I suppose you have to get past the stage where you automatically go to the fridge or the cupboard when you're hungry. friend of mine used to go and eat a tomato when eatting healthy and he needed a snack- takes all sorts really

The original and still the best...

its more than likely that you're not actually hungry but that there's a psychological reason that you think you're hungry. http://www.csun.edu/~vcpsy00h/students/hunger.htm

General discussion / Re: New York
January 07, 2008, 04:53:00 PM
ill decide, thanks for the pm- I hadn't seen this.

Anyway for the record. Ben and Jacks is one of the best steakhouses anywhere (their bacon is class and the barman's from Donegal), S&W was a great place but I think has gone downhill over the last 2/3 years. Luger's is great too, but too much like hard work to get out there. There's a few other which I like : the striphouse on 12th, BLT on 57th (though overpriced wine list) Bobby vans in the park ave walkway under the helmsley (but they pack you in too much and everybody is fond of the sound of their own voice) Delmonico's is maybe the granddaddy of them all and has been a wall street fixture for a hundred odd years.  Anyway big money but the story telling value of a steak in a NYC steakhouse is worth it. Try and get creamed spinach with your steak, not a very Irish thing to do but worth it.

Re Boyne gael's posts- very little to argue with there- tix is the booth in times square, you can also see a show you like and head to the theatre yourself, if you are in a decent hotel, drop the concierge a few bucks and ask him to do the booking for your restaurant and shows as he'll get you better seats and a table at a busy time.

Do not put electronics in your checked luggage.

Jersey Gardens is good Nike store there is great value (there is a sales tax though, but its way less than New York). Depending on what you're planning, there is the hell on earth that is woodbury common, Outlet store village where half the shoppers seem to be Irish/British, its definitely a "name brand" bargain hunters paradise (century 21 on steroids). Or if you're feeling a bit more exclusive and dont fancy the fifth avenue brigade, there's always short hills mall where all the soprano wannabes spend their not so hard earned inheritance. Architecture there is quite good to :-)

as for pubs clubs etc, thats a pretty open ended question- give me some more info and I'll see if anything comes to mind. Marquee is worth a look for the celeb spotters out there, but only if you're young and beautiful (or if you know the staff...)

If you're talking paul brady I would have to say "nobody knows" is a brilliant tune that deserves a mention on this thread

General discussion / Re: The 2008 US Election thread

I still fancy bloomberg in this race. He will only step in if he thinks he can win however. There is a very strong sentiment in the US right now that the 2 party system is not working, Bloomberg's angle if he runs will be inclusivity. He is likely to run if you get very polarising nominations. Huckabee for example would be seen as very polarising, right wing old school, big noise on tax, evangelical preacher. Obama, clinton and edwards would most likely fall under the same old democratic stereotypes.

What's interesting however is the obama story. With the analysis of the iowa results obama is getting a lot of attention from independents, the young, the rich, the black, and the female. Here's the problem you can get enough of those voters motivated to go out and swing a caucus or a primary, but can you get them out to win an election. My concern about his campaign is that when it comes to the crunch I believe that should obama get the nomination every right wing racist and hill billy in the country will get out and vote to stop a black president. Same goes for a woman, and for bloomberg the big question is would him being jewish cause the same reaction?

One thing that bloomberg has in his favour is money and track record. He is the most popular mayor in new york in decades, he has $15 billion in personal assets, of which it is believed he would spend $1bn on the campaign. That means he needs no oil money, no weapons money, no drug money etc. That brings a huge amount of credibility and makes this one of the most interesting campaigns since jfk got in. Watch this space...

Poor again, could I say choked, would that be fair?
That being said, couldn't believe arsenal yesterday, yer wee man and his three hand balls, net result 2 goals and a yello card! And as for fabregas' theatrics, he should see a fine for that, not that'll bother him. 2 hand balls, a dive and the stupidist mix up and arsenal win 4-1, feel sorry for the other half...

GAA Discussion / Managers and Payment
December 18, 2007, 07:29:10 PM
So I've tried to get a sense of what the actual position of the club is, and if you'd like to leave your club and county that would help get a sense of the distribution of the paid managers. If anyone knows (not as in I heard from a fella in the bar) what the manager/ trainer is paid and wants to post it, feel free.

Also any thoughts on what you think should be the GAA's position on managers getting paid.

#3269
I know its there in many forms, however its mostly been as an afterthought to the players thing, and in the mudslinging around "how dare he/she comment sure their club has been paying their manager for years"
I'll start one if there isn't one there.

Lies damn lies and statistics...

The report on the 100,000 Euro that county players stand to lose makes a number of interesting assumptions:

  • that the county player will not be promoted because he puts in less hours on the job than a non county player
  • that the county player is in a job where overtime accrues and is not paid for time spent at football related events
  • that the county player gets no compensation monetary or otherwise for his efforts

I think that everyone of those assumptions is a fallacy, and undermines the report in itself.

I do feel that the GPA has been an agent for change for the better for the players, especially with calling the county boards to account for their treatment of injuries to players, and ensuring that training gear etc is funded by the board. However I think that they should have concentrated efforts on making sure club players were looked after before springing the pay for play/ grant issue. Hearts and minds and all that...

By the way I'd like to hear thoughts on managers getting paid, is this something that should be stamped out?
