LWOP is cheaper than capital punishment, and it's possible to release a wrongly-convicted person and give them some sort of life back. You can't resurrect a wrongfully-executed person.

I'm surprised they didn't wait until more information came out about the perp. Whether he was an angry white guy or a dark-skinned Muslim would determine their reaction.

The "thank you for your service" and "brave men and women in uniform" thing will be absent here, I think. The American culture of reverence to soldiers is weird.

And oddly enough, Twitter has implemented a peer-review system called Community Notes that seems to be working well. I've been writing a few notes myself, but got my privileges temporarily suspended after writing a note debunking the "Ireland is antisemitic" claim.
