I see Cavan won the Leinster Junior Championship last night. It begs the question of why, like with the minor championships and their back doors, is Ulster the only provincial body in the country not running something like this?

Surely this is a good way for counties to develop young players who might not be in the current senior teams. Cavan seem to think so anyway as do the rest of the GAA.

Tyrone county board secretary Dominic McCaughey has claimed that Joe McMahon was deliberately struck during Tyrone's Ulster SFC semi-final defeat to Donegal in June.

McMahon was forced off after shipping a high challenge from a Donegal opponents and Mickey Harte's team went on to lose the game in Clones by a single point, while the Tir Chonaill men marched on to the final against Derry, whom they defeated to clinch their first Anglo-Celt Cup since 1992.

"Tyrone were incapable of breaking through the Donegal defence, were guilty of poor free-taking and were unfortunate to lose full-back Joe McMahon through injury, from a deliberate and cynical punch to the head," McCaughey said in his report to the County Convention.

Sligo manager Kevin Walsh believes that cynical fouling is ruining the game of football.

Walsh was speaking after his junior side had been beaten by Cork in the All-Ireland semi final and the Galway native feels it is time that the GAA acted on the matter.

"In my view cynical fouls should result in a straight red card and a sending off," stressed Walsh. "The professional foul is creeping into the game and it's something that has to be addressed.

"Referees should use their own initiatives in these cases. A cynical foul should result in a red card and a sending off. Maybe the rules have to be looked at. It's something that's come into the game a lot this season and it needs to be addressed."
