Are we more concerned with political correctness than crime?
There have been many reports in recent weeks and months of gangs of muslim men in towns throughout england systematically grooming and abusing children. The one reported yesterday on the BBC news website was particularly harrowing: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-45980210?fbclid=IwAR35-lJKh3vVLAhq0N7O9gEU4Vx8ZqHd0ZkMzgdC3CB2gO8YO78WTvdgbfQ

This is an account from one of the survivors: https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/rotherham-grooming-gang-sexual-abuse-muslim-islamist-racism-white-girls-religious-extremism-a8261831.html

And an article from Forbes.com on the widespread abuse in Rotherham: https://www.forbes.com/sites/rogerscruton/2014/08/30/why-did-british-police-ignore-pakistani-gangs-raping-rotherham-children-political-correctness/#4a2095c0754a

Here are some more wiki references of other abuse rings if you care to read them:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banbury_child_sex_abuse_ring

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotherham_child_sexual_exploitation_scandal

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telford_child_sexual_exploitation_scandal

I would point to the survivors comments of the rhetoric at the time of the abuse, the men's attitude towards white people and their religious outlook.
At the risk of being called rascist or anti-muslim, the media and the public at large are not addressing the problem or the fundamentalist beliefs of the perpetrators which the survivors say is their motivation for the abuse.....

General discussion / Every day carry
October 29, 2018, 11:25:51 AM
I worked in an off license and bars in my teens and always got used to carrying a bottle opener (corkscrew, beer bottle opener and small blade). In my later teens I always had a swiss army knife. I grew up in the countryside and was always footering at wee projects here and there and loved the versatility of the tool. I've progressed to a Leatherman and absolutely love it. When I was a younger man and hunted and kept dogs I always had bailer twine in my coats! You never knew when a loose dog needed caught (or so went the thinking!)
I don't wear a watch. If we were going out hiking I would bring a small backpack with a first aid kit and we have a first aid kit in the cars.
I have a small rigid wallet that only holds 10 cards and has a money clip. I got it because I was tired of a bulky wallet and this one is also RFID blocking.

Interested to see what others carry most of the time and why?

General discussion / Mid life crisis
July 26, 2018, 08:20:31 PM
I went home earlier in July to Armagh and was home the year before that too. Something I noticed and I suppose I'm experiencing a bit of it myself is the scary realization that life is moving very fast, time is precious and lots of men (and maybe women too) around the age of 40 are having a bit of a mid life crisis and wondering if they chose the right path. I've changed jobs recently in to a brand new industry.  Some friends at home have done the same. I also see the negative side of things with people ending their marriages in the hope for something better....

I find myself concerned more about time.  Missed opportunities to spend time with my aging parents or missed opportunities to spend time with my kids.  My job change hopefully will provide more work/life balance and afford me more time at home and less travelling for work. But I still wonder what else I can do.

Anyone in the same boat?

General discussion / Christmas cards
December 19, 2017, 12:19:21 PM
Do you still send them?
I see all these posts on FB "we won't be sending any this year we are donating to charity instead" and then all the other people who don't send cards patting them on the back for a "great idea"...
Whatever happened to sending cards and making a charitable donation?

I know it's a small thing to gripe about or miss but I miss it all the same - I think it's a nice touch to send cards and write a wee note to people you might not have seen in a while.

General discussion / Pedophiles in Hollywood
October 30, 2017, 01:49:55 PM
Surprised not to read anything on here yet about this?
Allegations against Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Second Mile charity for underprivileged kids started by Sandusky in the late 70s is now at the center of an investigation. Corey Feldman's talk of this for years.... references throughout award ceremonies about it. Seems to be widespread.
This is genuinely not about point point scoring. I know the Church should be held to a higher standard than hollywood and the church should be a safe place. Just wondering why no outcry from the folks on here who would be usually very vocal about it?
Is it just expected in Hollywood?
What's the response now? stop watching films?
Pedophilia is Pedophilia...whether in the boy scouts the church or hollywood. Surely the widespread response should be the same?
did I miss a thread?

General discussion / Sweet chilli chicken
September 05, 2017, 03:44:51 PM
Can someone explain how it happened?
Before I left Ireland Sweet Chilli Chicken was a new item on the menu in chinese takeaways.  It was tasty but so where/are many other items on the menu.
Fast forward 11 years and sweet chilli chicken is EVERYWHERE. I don't know of a cafe or hot food counter in Armagh that doesn't have it in some shape or form on the menu. I'm sure other towns are the same? It's in every supermarket in the pre-made sandwiches/wraps section...
I can't eat it now at all just on principle.

There has to be more to life that sweet chilli chicken???

General discussion / Hunting
May 15, 2017, 09:24:05 PM
I see a lot of commotion about banning hunting on FB and TV.  I grew up hunting with hounds and terriers and lurchers. It was part of country life. Most of the country lads I went to school with did the same. I travelled all over the Northern counties to meet with other "Foot Hound" hunts and always enjoyed the sport and the camaraderie with the groups.
There's still houndsmen in Armagh.
There's plenty of lads lamping still and shooting foxes and other vermin.

What are folks thoughts on it? Is it a big show made for FB? Are people dead set against it? Are those against it all folks that would be classified as "townies"?
Where do you stand?
Is any form of hunting ok?

Was chatting with a good friend yesterday and this came up.  We both admitted that our siblings or parents don't really know us. Or at least know much about us. My Ma is adamant I eat mushrooms...I haven't had one in over 20 years.... ah he likes Man Utd or Liverpool, loves Irish music and the GAA - but couldn't tell anyone what you work at, what your dreams and aspirations are what gets you out of bed in the morning, who you look up to, how you feel about politics, religion, the world, where you fit in....
As we talked about this some more we wondered if this was an Irish thing? The inability to go beyond the surface and have meaningful conversations? Or is it just something you experience more when you leave Ireland?

Interested in your take on it....

Mate of mine is embarking on a sales career that will involve travel all over Ireland and I was chatting to him about the different perks over here in the U.S with credit card points, hotel rewards, flight rewards etc...

anything similar in Ireland you would recommend? He will use his own credit card and expense at the end of the month so good opportunity (if he here) to get points but I'm not sure if that's even available at home?

any hotel chains you would recommend for rewards programmes?

General discussion / Not born that way

Some interesting reading here on sexual orientation:
http://www.thenewatlantis.com/authors/lawrence-mayer

The Journal is a well-known journal of science, technology and ethics based in Washington D.C.  This article analysed the scientific evidence of LGBT issues published to date in scientific journals.

The report was authored by two eminent scholars. Dr. Lawrence Mayer, a professor of psychiatry and statistics and biostatistics at Arizona State University, stated in the preface to the study that he has testified in dozens of federal and state legal proceedings strongly supporting equality and opposing discrimination for the LGBT Community. However, Dr. Mayer stated he supports every sentence in this report without reservation since it is about science and medicine.  He also stated he was alarmed to learn during his review of over 500 scientific articles that the LGBT community bears a disproportionate rate of mental health problems compared to the population as a whole.

The other author is Dr. Paul McHugh, one of the leading psychiatrists in the world. He was psychiatrist-in-chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore from 1975 to 2001.  These scientists reviewed hundreds of peer reviewed studies on sexual orientation and gender identity from the biological, psychological and social sciences.
Their conclusions were as follows:

- The belief that sexual orientation is an innate, biologically fixed human property – that people are "born that way" – is not supported by scientific evidence.
- The belief that gender identity is an innate, fixed human property independent of biological sex – so that a person might be a 'man trapped in a woman's body' or 'a woman trapped in a man's body' – is not supported by scientific evidence.
- Only a minority of children who express gender-atypical thoughts or behaviour will continue to do so into adolescence or adulthood. There is no evidence that all such children should be encouraged to become transgender, much less subjected to hormone treatments or surgery.
- Non-heterosexual and transgender people have higher rates of mental health problems (anxiety, depression, suicide), as well as behavioral and social problems (substance abuse, intimate partner violence), than the general population. Discrimination alone does not account for the entire disparity.

General discussion / Personal Trainers
October 28, 2016, 08:50:22 PM
I follow a few gyms around home and the amount of PTs out there is shocking. What's also shocking is that half of them have barely any experience.
One gym offering body transformations has 4 PTs on the books 2 of whom went through the body transformation in 2016 and all of a sudden are now PTs
There's also 2 gyms in Armagh showing the same girl as their success story and one gym showing the owner of the other gym as his success story.

Who is paying for these people to train them?

Any PT's on here or anyone use a PT?

http://dailysignal.com/2016/01/04/washington-quietly-adopts-new-transgender-bathroom-locker-room-policies/

So a new law was quietly passed last month here in WA that allows anyone of any sex that identifies themselves as transgender to use any bathroom they choose.
This week a man walked in to the women's changing rooms at a local pool and undressed in front of a young girls swimming team. Staff were called and he ignored them and went swimming then came back again and used the facilities to dress and leave.  He said under the new law he was able to use whatever facilities he wanted.

There has been a lot of noise about this over here and Seattle would be the PC capital of the West coast.

But here's some questions? a straight man undresses in a woman's locker room, bits hanging out and they are in uproar.  Bruce Jenner undresses in a woman's locker room, buts hanging out and he gets woman of the year?

What's going on online these days? I see so many video's of "homeless experiments" people pretending to be homeless or people interacting with homeless people, highlighting how they are better people than the ones who walk past them on the street. Social experiments. What's your take on the ones that make these videos? Are they genuinely concerned about the homeless problem? Or just looking for some internet notoriety?

So in a time where Bruce Jenner is being celebrated for embracing his inner "woman" and being awarded for the courage to do something about it I found an interesting news item today up Washington State.
http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-33109866
Rachel Dolezal, a resident of Spokane, WA about 4 hours drive from here is the current NCAAP President of her local area. Except she isn't black. She has no African heritage whatsoever. She is a white girl of Swedish and German decent with some Native American ancestry who likes to slap on the fake tan and crimp her hair to look black. In essence she is embracing her inner black woman.

Now the response has been none too friendly in this part of the country. The same media who applauded Bruce Jenner for transforming into a "woman" is up in arms at Rachel Dolezal for going black.....

So how much of our reaction to anything these days is our own? And how much is based off of how the media want us to react?

Found this great resource and thought I would share. Feel free to explore the site - I enjoyed Lady Wilde's stories:

Something I read which was very interesting was about the links between ancient Iran/Persia and ireland... anyone heard anything about this before? all news to me...

So the openly gay Mayor of the City of Houston has issued a subpena for the sermons of all Pastors/Priests in the Houston Area that mentions homosexuality, transgender people or the mayor herself.
Any pastor who does not turn in their sermons will be held in contempt of court and arrested.

I know most if not all of us are for the separation of Church and state but surely it goes both ways (no pun intended)?
Surely it's not ok for legislation of this kind?

Check out the article and do more research if you like for other sources:
