I see Paddy Cosgrave is torching his Web Summit business with unwise tweeting.
He annoyed the Israeli tech community and it has spiralled.
He has always tweeted edgy stuff about the Irish scene and gotten away with it, like making up some yarn that 4 nurses had died at the start of Covid.

Not sure he did a whole lot (if anything) wrong in this case, but as you say he's been lucky to get away with previous stuff. Of the hundreds of random people I have met as part of my business dealings over the last couple of decades, he stands out as the most obnoxious. A complete a-hole, who is prepared to tell outright lies to make a point.

Greta Thunberg had to delete an "I stand with Palestine" post because of an 'anti-semitic' toy octopus in the photo! The revolution devours its children. How sweet!

He's the best example of how supreme self-confidence over ability can bring you a long way in life.
I know a couple of people who worked on the early Dublin summits. They couldn't believe it ever took off, as it was a shit show. He left loads of people unpaid too.

Interesting that barely anyone is sticking up for him. Too many bridges burned.

He's the right man getting his comeuppance for the wrong reason.

Exactly this!
He's a vindictive, arrogant p***k who deserves to taken down more than a few pegs.
But of all the things he has said, this was on the mildest end.
"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

Looks like Paddy Cosgrave resigning as CEO of Websummit. Probably what is likely the end of a great brand he built is a big price to pay for saying the right thing. Up to that I thought he was a spoilt private educated git who showed little thanks for the money he got from Irish taxpayer, even if he had correct concerns about internet at RDS in the early days of his tech event. In time, big tech will have questions to answer on why they so blatantly took sides as war crimes are being committed.

Bord na Mona man

There was probably a build up to this. For years he has been taking swings, especially at prominent Irish figures and building a reputation of being a loose cannon.
The Indo mentioned how last year his Summit lost a lot of speakers over his suspected pro-Russian sympathies.
He is big pals and a promoter of Chay Bowes who is in the Putin camp, so it's easy to conclude that.

Sponsors and backers getting uncomfortable would have stayed on board while the Summit was still the biggest show in town. When that wasn't guaranteed, they've dropped him like a hot potato.

Big corporations are sheep and follow the herd. Once a couple drop out on some sort of moral stance, they all follow.

It's a very strange downfall though. He would have been the ultimate Fine Gael stereotype. Big farming family, boarded in Glenstal Abbey €20k per year, at the Dublin summits he was cheek and jowl with the Fine Gael government of the day.
It turned very nasty when they didn't relent to his demands for keeping the thing in Dublin and he developed a serious vendetta against them.

He would have spent a fortune on promoting social media posts against Leo etc. He has pumped €1 million into the Ditch to go dig dirt on the government parties.
He might not be able to afford this for much longer at the current trend.

Cosgrave was given to intemperate statements. That is one thing down in the pub or in a forum such as this, but twitter is a only a few characters, so statements go all over the world without context. At some level he knows that rightly, and he would likely hassle anyone working for him who countered his view, so good riddance.

No fan of paddy. His slow hand clapping the IDA speaker at one of his events and then taking the mic off her (after getting €700,000 of taxpayers money) showed him to be a right privileged scut. But he still imo was not wrong with his war crimes statement and it may be the one and only time he praised the Irish gov (post from the days when he was going to U2 concerts with his one time buddy, Leo Varadkar).

Homer Simpson will no longer be allowed to strangle Bart.

Ah wokeness.

I'm left wondering something. Would the people who drive cancel culture,  really prefer to spend a half an hour of their life watching modern day Simpsons over heyday Simpsons?

I saw an ad that said if you are choking someone, even if it's consensual, you're a criminal.
