the true story is supposed to be that the official was handing out participation medals first and didn't realise that winners were also meant to get those medals as well, as that wee girl was also the winner.

The official made a mistake, thought she had handed  a medal to the girl in question but hadn't, she sought to rectify the mistake immediately. She wrote a long letter of apology to the family  straight after, but GI 'neglected' to forward it to the parents.



Gymnastics Ireland suppressed a personal apology letter to a young gymnast whose treatment at a medal ceremony sparked international outrage, and have refused to acknowledge or tackle systemic racism in the sport, her family say.

But her email account showed the woman had sent a more detailed apology letter, and Gymnastics Ireland had withheld it from me."

Yeah I watched the news, I think the gripe is how GI went about it.

Only after the video went viral did GI decided to 'make amends' 18 months later.

I've been to many of those events way back when my daughters were involved in gymnastics, it can be busy and things get muddled up, but fix it quick and everyone goes away happy.

yes it doesn't look good and doesn't add up then if there was a lot of hassle after for 18 months, that's why I said 'supposed'.

Well that's not true.

After the incident the family's case was taken up by the campaign group, Sport Against Racism Ireland, which informed the American civil rights activist Professor Harry Edwards.

He in turn contacted gymnast world champion Simone Biles, who sent the family a video of support.

I truly believe ( I hope) that the judge just completely forgot or got mixed up, god knows I've been crapping myself looking down the line at kids tournaments saying to myself "christ, I hope I've enough medals to hand out" to think otherwise in this case would be desperate.

No the problem was suppressing an email apologising from the judge in question and not doing anything for 18 months!

That is supposed to have been what happened. I really can't believe that you would have something like this so blatantly obvious. There must be more to it and the participation vs winning seems to be it.

The exact timeline I am not sure about. If GI or the person who presented the medals actually made a statement and clarified what actually happened it might help. It has been really poorly handled by GI.
