So the Vatican have released new guidelines telling catholics they aren't allowed to scatter or hold ashes on anything other than Church approved holy ground?

Money making scheme in my opinion....

GAA Discussion / Footballing "Style" within your club
November 19, 2014, 11:08:51 AM
I know it will be necessary to adopt your style of play in matches to counteract the opposition, however, does your club preach a certain footballing "style" or "philosophy" that is ingrained throughout all your underage structures and all your coaches buy in to?  E.g. are you a kicking club?  A hand-passing club?  A club of blanket defenders?  Attack in waves?  All of the above?

If you are, how do you implement this?  Do you have one coach in a coordinating role ensuring everyone is committed to "the philosophy", or is there direction taken from your existing Senior Management Team?

Or, if you don't have a particular philosophy, is it the case that you just allow the kids to learn the game through making their own mistakes along the way and not worry about one particular style?

GAA Discussion / Underage Awards
September 24, 2014, 03:03:27 PM
Well, what's your opinion on Underage Awards?  What do you do at your club?

Should there be awards for Under-8's / P3-P4?

We normally do Player of the Year and Most Improved Player and then all the kids get a medal.  My preference would be not to have awards at this age group.

GAA Discussion / Under 8's / 10's query
March 11, 2014, 08:50:39 PM
Just a bit of a straw poll here if you please for those involved in underage football.

If your club participates in small blitz type tournaments or Go Games are the teams made up by birth year or Primary school year? Is this consistent across your County?

Would you have a preference? Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things?

General discussion / The Turner Prize
October 23, 2013, 08:46:12 PM
Had a dander round the Turner Prize Exhibition today in Derry. Strange to say the least. However, the video exhibition and works in Gallery 2 by some French girl was pretty good. Very thought provoking.

Anyone else planning on getting up to it?

General discussion / Airtricity in the North
April 21, 2011, 08:19:23 PM
Lads, I had some dude call at the house there asking me to switch from NIE to Airtricity.  Offering a reduced rate etc for 1 or 2 years, depending on how long you want to sign up for.  Pay by Direct Debit, paperless billing, read your own meter and all that jazz.

Obviously I can't make a decision on my own and need the wise words from my fellow GAA Boarders before I sign up to anything.

So, anyone made the switch?  Any hassle?  Any problems?  How's the customer service?  Noticed any reduction in your bill? etc etc.

Thanks!  :)

General discussion / Fundraising ideas?
January 24, 2011, 08:07:04 PM
Dudes, bit of advice needed if you please!!!

The missus is thinking about organising a charity event for the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust (specifically for the Trophoblastic Tumour Screening and Treatment Centre), a charity which helped her a lot over the past year and a half. So I need some fundraising tips!

Karaoke night? Disco? 70's night?  What do you think would be a good night out and most importantly, would raise lots of money for the charity?

I've organised a gig night in the past for another charity so I was thinking about doing something different.

Any ideas welcome!

General discussion / Stung on Ebay - any advice?
December 16, 2010, 06:52:16 PM
Looking a bit of advice if anyone can give it.

Bought an item off Ebay, 50 quid for a dolls house as a Christmas present for my daughter. Opened the box the other day to check that everything was present and correct, one of those build it yourself jobs.

So, the roof, made from fecking flimsy cardboard is tore and not worth a fcuk. Some of the walls at the side are also very creased and again, one of them is ripped.

I contacted the seller through ebay to get their returns policy and low and behold, they said, in very broken English, that they don't accept returns.

So what happens? Can I just get robbed like that and get passed off with a pish-poor product?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Jonny Black,
Junior Johnson,
+ Special Guests

Captain Kennedy officially release their eagerly anticipated debut album "See You When I See You" on Monday 11th October 2010.

The album, produced, recorded and mixed by well renowned producer Mudd Wallace (Therapy?, Andy White, Pat McManus) and mastered by Jon Astley at Close to the Edge (Led Zeppelin, The Who, Ash), sees the band play on their strengths, namely the ability to deliver a catchy, melodic tune whilst maintaining their edgy, raw sound, an enduring feature of Captain Kennedy's live shows.  The album cover also features original artwork by designer/artist Dermy McConaghy www.manchini.co.uk

The band released two singles from the album earlier this year, "Stretch That Penny / Sweetest Friend", and "No Friend of Mine", with both receiving widespread airplay and press attention.  You can hear these songs on the band's Myspace

The official album launch is scheduled for 11th October at Auntie Annies, Belfast with support coming from a number of the country's finest acts including La Faro front-man Jonny Black, Americana artist Junior Johnson and Special Guests.

A number of other gigs have been lined up across the country including Derry, Dublin, Cavan and Lurgan.  Full details are available at www.captainkennedy.co.uk

Brian's Story

"My name is Brian and I am 8 years old.  I have a terminal condition called Fanconi's Anaemia of which there is no known cure.  Some children with my condition get a bone marrow transplant but this is only successful if we have a related donor and I don't.  My bone marrow doesn't work properly making new blood so sometimes I get very tired and bleed heavily.

My sister Helen had a bone marrow transplant from my brother, but Helen died two months later.  Helen was my twin and I miss her very much.

I have a wish to go to Florida and ride the big roller coasters but it is going to take a lot of money for me to get there and the insurance is going to be high too.  I would like to go to Florida while I have the health to enjoy it and am not too tired and I can't go when my bloods go down in case I haemorrhage on the rides.

My mummy can't afford to take me because mummy gave up work when Helen took sick and now she spends all her time with my brother and me.

Please can you help raise money to help my mummy grant my wish, I want my mummy and brother to have special memories of me when I'm with Helen in Heaven and I know I will enjoy Florida too.

Please can you make a small donation because my mummy says all the wee pounds add up."

Thank you very much,
Love from Brian Kerr

Stretch that Penny / Sweetest Friend

Ahead of their debut album hitting the shops in early summer 2010, Captain Kennedy will be releasing a download only, double A-side of Stretch That Penny / Sweetest Friend.  The single will be available for download from iTunes, Amazon and other online retailers from TODAY, 5th April 2010.

Stretch That Penny, powered by fiddle and gin-soaked piano, has already been featured as part of the BBC's Raw Money campaign, providing sound advice for hard times.

Sweetest Friend
, often regarded as the band's signature tune and a firm favourite with Captain Kennedy fans, has been given a new lease of life with this release.  Often described as a heartfelt and poignant ballad, Ciaran Lavery's gravel infused vocals ensure the song keeps its rawness and spontaneity.

BIOGRAPHY

Captain Kennedy are a 7-piece band from Northern Ireland.  2009 saw the band establish their position on the Irish music scene with a number of high profile festival appearances, the highlight being two dates at the prestigious Open House Festival.  Other impressive gigs including sharing the stage with the likes of Alela Diane, Noah and the Whale and Foy Vance and appearances on the same festival bills as renowned artists such as Steve Earle, Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling, have cemented Captain Kennedy's reputation as a formidable live act.

2010 sees the band release their debut album "See You When I See You".  The album, produced, recorded and mixed by well renowned producer Mudd Wallace (Therapy?, Andy White, Pat McManus), sees the band play on their strengths, namely the ability to deliver a catchy, melodic tune whilst maintaining their edgy, raw sound, an enduring feature of Captain Kennedy's live shows.

We will be playing an acoustic session on tonight's ATL programme to mark the release, so tune in between 8pm and 10pm, 94.5 on your FM dial!

That is all........ :P
