Big loss but he's dead right - playing IC isn't the be all and end all. He's a young man and the break will do him good.
career wise probably a good move and Dubs won't win this year anyway

Dubs post AI hangover year - it's Mayo's this year. Dubs and O'Carroll to win again next year.

Dublin more than likely will have to beat both Kerry and Mayo again this year! And you know they will do it!

If it's in Parnell Park, there will be a fair few disappointed Kerry & Mayo fans not getting tickets.

Either way, it's Mayo's to lose this year. Aido said as much in the indo today along with lamenting the attention he got over his corn rows.

A lad like him probably needs a year break away from football and unlike some other lads at his age he has won a few All Ireland's already.

Brave call to say Dublin won't win it this year. U-21 full back of the last few years David Byrne could easily fill in and it would hardly surprise anyone if Dublin become the first side since Kerry 2007 to win back to back All Ireland's.

It's gas how ye Dubs think! You offer Parnell Park as a alternative away venue for Croker! Classic!

Are you referring to our national stadium? The same one ye all had a canary over when you had to play away from it one time? Will ye make up yer mind please?

Mayo's to lose. Full forwards all over Ireland are on the piss in celebration.

Rory has promised to let Kieran Donaghy and Michael Murphy out of his pocket before he leaves

Say Kerry Mayo Dubs very close together with Donegal a bit behind and the peleton way behind. OK Mayo have the psychological thing but the teams have beaten each other over the last few seasons. The "intinsity" required to win an all Ireland is insane. Dubs have been going since 2011.  They will be back for a serious tilt in 2017

Mayo are specialists at beating the AI champs in their hangover year - this is why it's Mayo's year.

Not an easy decision to make I'd say for a player playing at the Top with a Top team.
I imagine fellas with a bit of a wider view must get sick of the limitations of playing at the top level. And then Indiana's 1000 year Reich and all you know that sort of way bud.

Oh yeah, But You can still imagine the pressure that would be on him even after making his own mind up?

There wasn't any pressure put on him to stay

And that is why Jim Gavin is one of the best managers out there, I lament Dublin's resources and advantages from a selfish Kildare perspective but this guy I really admire, he makes it all tick. Amuses me the cult of the manager in the GAA yet here is a guy whose team play the best football in the country, play with humility (something I firmly attribute to Gilroy and Gavin) and he continually gets the best out of his players. One of the great modern managers along with Cody, O'Connor and Harte.

O'Carroll is a young man, he'll have a great time and Gavin knows O'Carroll will be better for it and with that so will Dublin GAA. Guarantee Gavin will be re-framing as not a loss to Dublin but an opportunity for someone else to step up and so he should.
