Olympic aspirations for ladies gaelic
09 March 2007

The Ladies Football Congress took place in Tipperary at the weekend with the expansion of the game one of the main topics for discussion.

Due to the growing popularity of the game overseas, it was proposed that Ladies Gaelic Football be put forward for recognition as an Olympic sport by 2032. Ladies Gaelic is hugely popular in Australasia, North America and Europe and as it is a game with a universal skill base, it could become a global sport over the next 15-20 years.

Also at Congress, the issue of player burnout was discussed following a presentation on the subject by former Ladies Footballer Lynette Hughes and it was agreed that the rule disallowing U-16 players to play senior county football is to be maintained.

Geraldine Giles, President of Cuman Peil Gael na mB_n said: "The Congress was a success and the most striking thing for me was the turnout from the overseas delegates who turned out in force and are now making a huge contribution to the Association. We estimate there are over 10,000 Ladies footballers playing overseas and the game is thriving in places like Australia and Canada."

The Suzuki Ladies National Football League kicks back into action after a rest week and as the hunt for play-off places heats up so too does the battle to stave off relegation.

Sarah OÅfConnorÅfs Kerry recorded their third consecutive league victory with a win over Tyrone and the Kingdom are now in poll position in Division 1A. However, Kerry must beat Mayo and Armagh to secure top spot and avoid the likes of Cork and Galway in the playoffs.

Waterford are the only side in Division 1A without a win and having already lost to fellow strugglers Tyrone, they face a huge task to maintain their division 1 status for next year.

The eagerly anticipated clash of Cork and Galway in Division 1B takes place this weekend. Both sides boast an unbeaten start to their respective league campaigns and a win for either side will no doubt assure top seeding in their group.

At the other end of Division 1B, Kildare and Donegal face a relegation dogfight. Neither side has recorded a win but Kildare have shown more promise with two with narrow defeats at the hands of Galway and Monaghan. The clash between these two sides may determine which county is relegated.

Sligo and Tipperary are leading the way in Division 2 topping their respective groups. Sligo, the 2006 All Ireland Junior Champions, have been in impressive form and have flagged promotion to Division 1 as a must for 2007.

Last yearÅfs Junior All Ireland runners-up, Leitrim find themselves in a precarious position after failing to win either of their opening two games. Leitrim must get back to winning ways this weekend in Division 2A against fellow strugglers Limerick if they are to avoid getting dragged into a relegation battle.

Tipperary have the comfort of knowing that they have already beaten Wexford, their closest challenger in Division 2B, and should confirm top billing this weekend at home to Longford. At the other end of the table any one from three could be facing relegation as Longford, Roscommon and Down have yet to record a victory.

In Division 3, Cavan, Westmeath and Fermanagh have all made flawless starts to the league but no team has as yet broken from the pack and looked like a definite promotion prospect.

Brislane's Royal switch set to go through
07 March 2007

Tipperary hurling manager Michael 'Babs' Keating is expected to give his blessing to Eoin Brislane's proposed move to Meath.

The powerful Toomevara star wants to join the Royals as soon as possible, but if Keating decides that the player could figure in his plans for the rest of the year, the transfer could be stalled.

However, Brislane was omitted from Keating's panel for the NHL and it would seem there is now nothing to stop him from throwing in his lot with the Leinster hurling minnows. The player should be eligible to line out for Meath within a fortnight as David Kennedy's recent transfer to Kildare went through without a hitch.

Ulster SFC final set for Clones
14 February 2007

This year's Ulster SFC final looks set to return to its spiritual home of Clones as it clashes with the Leinster SFC final on July 15th.

The Ulster Council has confirmed that the feeling in their camp is that Croke Park will not be available to them next summer.

A re-structuring of the county championship season sees the All-Ireland final being played a week earlier in order to facilitate the club competitions which, in turn, brings forward the championship dates.

"Because of the tightening up of the fixture schedule, it has ruled it out for us," Ulster Council PRO Martin McAviney explained.

"From the look of it, it will be Clones. Clones is the biggest venue we have."

Limerick travel to Nenagh on sunday in the first round of the national league

the team is as follows i believe

Murray (Patrickswell)
W Walsh (Murroe/Boher)
S Lucey (Croon)
D Reale (C) (Hospital/Herbertstown)
P Lawlor (Croom)
B Geary (Monaleen)
P O Dwyer (Kilmallock)
M O Brien (Glenroe)
D O Grady (Granagh/Ballingarry)
N Moran (Ahane)
O Moran (Ahane)
M Fitz (Doon)
Shox (Kilmallock)
S O Conner (Ahane)
B Foley (Patrickswell)

I would be hopeful for a victory, however after seeing Tipp beat cork in the waterford crystal cup earlier in January. it will be difficult. it has been a draw between these teams so often in recent years, so a draw could definitely materialise.

GAA fear for Kingdom
09 February 2007

There are growing concerns among Kerry GAA hierarchy over the amount of footballers and hurlers players leaving the county to play Gaelic games elsewhere.

In a survey conducted by the county board last year, a total of 88 players left the county during the first eight months of the year and there is no sign of that number decreasing.

In total 45 clubs have been affected by the mass exodus which has been caused by players emigrating to places like the U.K, Australia and America, while others have moved counties, generally for work reasons.

West Kerry Board chairman, Derry Murphy, stressed: "The present position where club players have no meaningful competition during the summer months must be addressed as a matter of urgency."

He added: "Lads going off and travelling the world is all a part of life nowadays but what I would like to see are more meaningful competitions during the summer to keep them here."

Gulf Gaelic Games and All Stars 2007
29 January 2007

On Friday and Saturday 26th/27th January the biggest festival of Gaelic Games ever in the Middle East took place in the Dubai Polo and Equestrian club, United Arab Emirates.

Over the two days just under 70 games of gaelic football, hurling and camogie were played by the 26 teams that participated including six clubs from Ireland and two from London. Limavady Wolfhounds, Derry narrowly beat Hong Kong in the Men's A final in a cracking game with Fulham Irish, London taking the plate and Finnegan's Irish of Dubai winning the social competition. In the Ladies Football both Dubai Teams proved far too strong for the opposition with Dubai A winning the final.

The camogie proved a much closer fought contest with St. Munna's, Westmeath just edging out Dubai Celts in a very tight final. On Saturday afternoon we were treated to a high scoring game of hurling when St. Bridgids, Dublin took on a Dubai Celts selection. Level at half time, St. Brigids pulled away to win by six points in the final quarter.

The highlight of the weekend was of course the Vodafone Allstars exhibition game between the 2005 and 2006 selections. This game brought down the curtain on the inter county careers of legends Peter Canavan and Seamus Moynihan. Watched by a crowd of over 2000 both sets of teams displayed great examples of the skills in gaelic football before the 2006 class eventually succumbed to their predecessors 4-13 to 3-10.

The allstar game was preceded by an U-6 and U-12 game with Dubai Celts taking on Abu Dhabi Na Fianna. After displaying their skills in this game the children then gave the Allstars a guard of honour as they entered the field.

There has been a fair bit of movement in the GAA transfer circle of late

With Rory Gallagher going to Cavan and the mentioning of Frankie Dolan joining his cousins in Westmeath.

and i see Raymie Gallagher has joined tyrone club side Dromore.

also on the hurling front,  Eoin Kelly Waterford senior hurler made big news this week, with his move from Mount Sion to Passage. And former tipp centre back David Kennedy has signed up to play for Kildare.

Anymore concrete or rumoured transfers

Walsh calls for greater share of cash cake
04 January 2007

Kerry chairman Sean Walsh has criticised the GAA's top brass for failing to fairly distribute their expanding match-day revenue.

Walsh claims that players and county boards are not getting a sufficient slice of the massive financial cake, adding that county boards are nearing financial breaking point from the expense of preparing county teams.

In 2006, Kerry spent EUR776,871 on their inter-county teams, which was an increase of 25 per cent on the previous year, and if that trend continues, there is every chance that the EUR1 million barrier could be broken this year.

According to Walsh, the GAA faces a revolt from players who are pivotal to its annual multi-million euro earnings if it doesn't increase the share-out of match-day revenue and fund boards.

He said: "Our players are generating a lot of money for Croke Park but are not getting it back.

"There will have to be a realistic look at what it is costing to prepare teams, and where the money is being made, and the people responsible for making that money will have to get a realistic cut of the cake.

"The big money is in the gates at quarter-final and semi-finals and finals of the All-Ireland series. That is where the big money is and for us this year in relation to Bank of Ireland and sponsorship towards our team for the holiday fund we got EUR80,000, and overall we got a total back of around EUR300,000 in match expenses, covering all our teams.

"That left us with a shortfall of EUR700,000 to train our teams."

Walsh added: "We in Kerry have always been trying to prune our expenses to make them sustainable but costs are rising across the board."

Hurling Discussion / Camán the Slovaks!
January 04, 2007, 10:45:08 AM
Interesting article there on 'an fear rua'

Camán the Slovaks!
Alien ash makes the running for Irish hurley makers

The clash of the ash is now heard on the banks of the Danube, as the ancient art of hurley-making finds an unexpected new home in Slovakia.

Jack Carey, a member of the legendary Kilkenny hurling family, is training Slovak workers in how to make the camán, and inspiring them with videos of his brother, DJ Carey.

It all goes back to the shortage of suitable Irish ash to make the sticks. Hurleys made at home require 90pc of the material to be imported and it is increasingly hard to find. Mr Carey went looking for suitable supplies in eastern Europe. "They have natural ash in abundance here, but the specifications I wanted are very different from what they were used to, so it was difficult to get the material."

A breakthrough came when he made contact with Smurfit-Kapa in Sturovo, southern Slovakia. The merger between the Irish and Hungarian firms created the biggest forestry product company in the region. "You really have to have connections to do business here," Mr Carey says. "It is the biggest cultural difference from home. Trying to do business on your own just doesn't work. The Smurfit-Kapa link definitely saved my bacon."

Even then, the Slovak foresters had to be persuaded to take the ash trees up by the roots, rather than cut them in the normal way. "You need the root to get the curve in the grain of the hurley. They took a while to understand that."

Showing videos of hurling games being played was a big help. "They were absolutely amazed by the speed of it, and the physicality, and the fact that players wear so little protective gear. It was great motivation for them." Now, having watched DJ's wizardry on his own video, some of the half-dozen workers are learning how to pick up the sliotar on the stick and strike. "It shows them the balance in the stick and how it should feel."

Originally, he planned just to ship the wood to Ireland, but realised that good hurleys could be made on site. "It's a pretty mechanised business now, although the finish is done by hand. It just takes time for people to realise what they are making and we have constant training to get that through. "It is early days, but I think there is scope for expansion. It is not a question of cheaper labour. Sourcing the right material is everything in this business. "Labour is not an issue, and most of the expansion will probably come from new technology," Jack says.

GPA hit out at GAA comments

21/12/2006 15:58:27
The GPA has hit back at what it calls "comments made by GAA officials" regarding the proposed government-sponsored intercounty player grants during the past week.

The players' body, which is headed by Dessie Farrell, reiterated that they have, for the past four years, been lobbying the Irish government for grants inline with that which is already afforded athletes in other codes.

A statement, issued on Thursday, also welcomed the government's confirmation that funding will be ring fenced for the direct benefit of intercounty players.

And Gaelic Player Association chiefs acknowledged that this funding will be contingent on an agreement between the GAA and themselves on the utilisation of the money.

However, they have lashed out at comments from within the GAA domain that the grants amount to pay-for-play.

"Any suggestion that the provision of Government grant aid amounts to 'pay for play' by Croke Park officials' is nonsense," read the GPA statement.

"This is inconsistent with previous assurances sought and received by the GPA, that Croke Park had accepted the bona fides of the association in relation to this issue ie that professionalism is not part of the players' agenda."

The statement added that the grants would in no way damage the GAA's chances of securing government grants for other areas of its association such as stadia development and funding for grassroots level.

"The mechanism for this will not impact upon requests from the GAA for financial assistance, for development of county and training grounds etc.

"The very recent allocation of EUR6.85 million in funding, through the Government's infrastructural development grant scheme, to assist with the installation of floodlights in Croke Park and various stadium and training ground developments, clearly demonstrates this."

Michael Conway (Nurney), Murt and Ken Donnelly (Ellistown) Declan Brennan (Rathangan), Adrian McAndrew and Timmy Dowling (both Allenwood), Emmet Bolton (Eadestown) and Brian Flanagan (Johnstownbridge) have all been called up the panel after their respective performances at club and/or U21 level.

McIntyre rings the changes

John McIntyre Offaly Hurling Manager
20 December 2006

Offaly hurling manager John McIntyre has raised eyebrows by completing overhauling his panel for the coming season.

Established stars such as Michael Cordial, Damien Murray, Mick O'Hara, Joe Brady and Aidan Hanrahan have all been surprisingly omitted from the 28-man training panel. But the biggest shock of all is a lack of a single Whelahan family member since 1989. A county board spokesman said that the most celebrated of the brothers, Brian, is "not available", while Barry and Simon simply haven't been included.

In all, 12 players from last season's panel have been culled, and this has paved the way for McIntyre to introduce 10 players who are still under 21 in 2007. Amazingly, 23 of the 28-man panel is under the age of 25 so the Tipperary man is clearly building for the future.

Among the newcomers are Cathal Horan and Shane Dooley, sons of former county stars Padraig Horan and Joe Dooley. The other new faces are Ray Murray, Trevor Corcoran, Michael Verney, Conor Hernon, Kevin Kelly, David Kenny, Alan Middletown and Derek Molloy.

The panel in full is: J Bergin, E Bevans, K Brady, B Carroll, P Cleary, A Egan, D Franks, G Hanniffy, R Hanniffy, D Hayden, D Hoctor, B Mullins, B Murphy, G Oakley, B O'Meara, C Parlon, J Rigney, B Teehan, C Horan, S Dooley, R Murray, T Corcoran, M Verney, C Hernon, K Kelly, D Kenny, A Middletown and D Molloy.
