Very interesting, ideal size of a stadium for some irish matches I would think.

Thomond Park to host soccer
Thursday, 11 December 2008 10:12
Officials at Thomond Park are ready to open their doors to soccer after UEFA approved the venue as an international soccer venue.

The stadium is believed to be in serious talks with some of the leading European soccer clubs about hosting a pre-season tournament in the near future.

Stadium Director John Cantwell has confirmed that such a move would be subject to ratification by the IRFU and the FAI.

Officials hope to announce more details early in the new year.

Kirby takes up club reins
Will be interesting to see how Kirby gets on with his home club on his own, possibly he could be back with Limerick as his own man in a few years time. will be keeping tabs on how the d'well perform.

Former Limerick hurling star and selector Gary Kirby will manage his home club Patrickswell next year.

Kirby, who was Richie Bennis' right-hand man in the outgoing Limerick management set-up, will be assisted by Paul Foley, Ger Hurley, Pat Lillis and former All-Ireland referee Terence Murray, whose son Brian is the Limerick goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Richie Bennis has defended the Limerick hurling team holiday to Cancun and Florida earlier this year, which cost EUR200,000.

He said: "The players raised EUR100,000 with a golf outing and a car raffle brought in EUR15,000. As far as I can see, the county board didn't contribute a whole lot."

I might aswell start a thread on this, it is really getting down the the business end of the competition, Ulster and Connacht are already completed and both Munster and Leinster are down to the provincial finals.

Here is a summary

Ulster          - Cushendall (Antrim)
Connacht     - Portumna (Galway)
Leinster       - Birr (Offaly) or Ballyhale Shamrocks (Kilkenny)
Munster       - De la Salle (Waterford) or Adare (Limerick)

The last six has a very familiar look, with only the Musnter pairing have a novel pairing,

The GAA has confirmed that a sample recently provided by one of its players as part of the Irish Sports Council's Anti-Doping Programme has revealed an adverse analytical finding regarding the use of Salbutamol.

The finding will require the player to show that the result was the consequence of the therapeutic use of inhaled Salbutamol.

Salbutamol is a commonly prescribed treatment for asthma, but it is a banned substance, and players are only allowed to take the drug under strictly controlled guidelines.

The player involved has not been named.

In accordance with the provisions of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules, the GAA are obliged to provisionally suspend the player involved pending the outcome of a hearing of the Anti-Doping Hearings Committee.

A date for this meeting has not yet been scheduled

Hurling Discussion / New Wexford Hurling Manager
November 12, 2008, 09:53:22 AM
I think this is a very good appointment. Bonnar has been around for a long time on the college hurling scene and should know his stuff regarding wexford, players, as the majority wexford students go to WIT.

Bonnar takes charge of Wexford
12 November 2008

Former Tipperary star Colm Bonnar was last night named as the new Wexford hurling manager in succession to John Meyler.

One of the stars of Tipp's All-Ireland victories of 1989 and '91, Bonnar has been appointed for an initial two-year term and takes over at a time when many in the county are still smarting over the controversial dismissal of John Meyler last night. Meyler was sacked after a four-player delegation met Wexford chairman Ger Doyle to seek a change of management.

After an illustrious inter-county career which ended in 1998, Bonnar has since built up an impressive CV as a coach and physical trainer. Living in Waterford where he works as Sport and Student Development Officer in Waterford IT, he trained the Deise hurlers from 1999 to 2002 and later fulfilled a similar role with his native Tipperary in 2004 and 2005.

He has been manager of Waterford IT's Fitzgibbon Cup for the past six years, winning the competition four times in that period. He played in 10 All-Ireland finals with Tipp at all levels from 1982 to '98, and is also the holder of five Munster medals.

A member of one of Tipperary's most famous GAA families, Bonnar won an All-Star in 1988 and captained Cashel King Cormaces to their first county and Munster club senior hurling wins in 1991, which gave him the Tipp captaincy the following year.

ARFLI News: Start A New Club Today

ARFLI are looking to hear from anybody interested in forming a new club for the 2009 Season. Last year new clubs were formed in Mayo and Kerry but were not up and running in time for the season start. Both these clubs will participate in the 2009 Campaign, but now we want to hear from anybody with an interest in setting up new clubs in other areas. We're particularly interested in hearing from individuals in Down & Armagh, Galway, Belfast and the Southeast. For more details simply e-mail us at arflipr@yahoo.com and we'll be more than willing to help anyone get things off the ground and get out on the paddock next season.

picked this up off their website, anybody involved with this or know anything about the standard?

Loughnane to stay on as Galway hurling boss
20/08/2008 - 08:54:45

Ger Loughnane has agreed to remain as Galway senior hurling manager following talks with the County Board last night.

The Clare man's future in the job had been in doubt following the side's elimination from the Championship in the final round of qualifiers.

Loughnane has already completed two years of his three-year term, but there was a stipulation that his contract would be reviewed after the second year.

Probably a good thing, and if Galway move into Leinster next year, along with Antrim it would definitely help both counties, Also on a side note Westmeath and Carlow should be invited into the Leinster championship aswell.

Loughnane confirms Canning's inclusion
24 March 2008

Galway hurling boss Ger Loughnane has confirmed that teenage star Joe Canning will be joining up with the county senior squad this coming weekend.

"I'll just be straight honest with you lads," Loughnane told reporters.

"The story is we invited six Portumna lads onto the panel. Everybody that is brought into the Galway panel this year, they have been brought in for a chat beforehand.

"Ollie (Canning) is taking a bit of time to consider whether he will come back or not because it's a very big decision for him. It's a very big chance for him to take.

"We had all the other fellas in - Kevin Hayes, Damien Hayes, Eoin Lynch, Andy Smith and Joe (Canning).

"Joe will be back in. They're all back next weekend."

GAA Discussion / GAA Online Questionnaire
November 19, 2007, 07:13:59 PM
Anybody do it yet?

GAA Online Questionnaire

The GAA have announced details of a new online questionnaire which seeks the opinions of GAA members and the general public on how the Association is perceived and on its role in moden Irish society.

The exercise is part of a broader review in this context which has seen the Association carry out in-depth research among its clubs, players, officials, members and among supporters of the Asscoiation as well as key political and media figures.

The President of the GAA. Mr Nickey Brennan said: "It is important that we consult with our members and the wider community so that we can take as broad a range of views as possible into consideration in terms of how the Association is perceived by our own members and indeed the general public. As part of the process we have prepared a short questionnaire to enable us to get a real insight into opinions about the GAA. It is intended to aid us in understanding where we stand at present and how we can develop in the future and we would welcome the participation of interested parties in helping us acheive this goal."

The GAA have held a series of consultations with its members at all levels in recent months which included nation-wide workshops which sought the opinions of club members of all ages (from 12 years of age upwards) from all over the country. The views of major figures in Irish public life were also canvassed as part of this process and an omnibus national market research programme has been commissioned. A questionnaire has been sent to each club in the country and the online survey represents the final strand in the programme.

The questionnaire is currently available to complete at www.gaa.ie or directly at www.questionnaire.gaa.ie and has already generated a huge amount of interest among individuals wishing to have their say in relation to the ongoing development of the Association.
