GAA Discussion / Re: County Manager Merry go round

Quote from: redzone on August 31, 2024, 08:31:41 PMHarsh reality is MOR doesn't want a bit of Derry senior team. Why would he. Even their own from within the county won't touch it. Greatest crowd of bitches within the Gaa. Look at some of the posts about him here for leaving Glen after all he's done. Meenagh had the job if he wanted it and chose to go to Down and the Tailteen cup instead.

Not what happened with Meenagh at all, so the entire post is just your opinion and based on rumour or made up info.

Had a nest 2 weeks ago. Pest control did the business, but there has certainly been a surge in the last few days.

Get a peacock. The other day I was at the zoo and watched a peacock dining on poor unsuspecting wasps.

Can you eat peacock? Fatten one up on wasps and flies over the summer, eat peacock eggs, then some organic peacock for Christmas dinner.
You might be onto a winner.

So it would seem.
I would have thought they would go for their U20 manager though?

I saw Oasis in Cork in '95 or '96.
They were good, but the Prodigy supported them who put on a brilliant show and so when Oasis came on it felt like a bit of an anti-climax.
Not sure I'd be bothered to go see them again, but my teenage kids are mad to get. But no way I'm paying that kind of money for a concert ticket. Not for them or anyone.
Always said I'd go see ACDC if they ever came back, but I just refuse to pay stupid money to listen to music.

I didnt actually. I like the Coen brothers movies generally, but when I saw the ad for this I thought it looked rubbish so gave it a pass. Any good?

If they get this appointment right they could be a very dangerous proposition next year and further on.

Unfortunately you're right.

Well I say unfortunately, but to be honest from what I experienced Tyrone ones wished us well for the most part. It was Monaghan, Derry and Down who seemed to be the begrudgers.

No-one from Derry that I know begrudged Armagh the AI - in fact we all supported them.

Hard to pick a favourite.

The 1992 Ulster SF, Derry league champs vs Down AI champs. The atmosphere was electric in Casement.
'93 AISF against Dublin. After that game the final actually felt like an anti-climax. The Johnny McGurk point will go down in history.
94 Derry v Down when Derry were AI champs. One of the best games ever played - unfortunate to lose it and ultimately the fallout from Eamon Coleman's sacking after that game probably cost Derry a shot at further AI's in that decade.
Derry keeping then AI champs Tyrone scoreless in the first half in 2006.

Non-Derry moment - 95 AI final with Charlie Redmond not leaving the field and Peter Canavan (aka a 1-man Tyrone team) losing the final on a missed free ;)
Meath vs Tyrone in 96.

Quote from: Duine Inteacht Eile on August 20, 2024, 02:56:44 PMPaddy Jackson was able to go and play professionally in France.
Yet, there was no chance of a return to Ulster or Ireland. Even London Irish proved troublesome.
He was also found not guilty.

I can see why some make the comparison, but it's not the same scenario.
The Paddy Jackson case went to court when investigated - and the facts of the case were public record as a result. From memory, he didn't dispute what happened, only that it was consensual whereas the victim said it was not.

The facts of the RG allegations are not public record as far as I'm aware, and the same public authorities have not seen fit to prosecute.

Whatever about the rights and wrongs in both cases, I don't think the fallout from the Paddy Jackson case should be a template for what happens in this RG case.

Quote from: Norm-Peterson on August 20, 2024, 02:49:13 AMI consider all the fuss virtue signaling. They talk about setting a good example yet they don't have a problem with McFaul representing Derry? I bet there are many ex paramilitary members in Derry GAA yet I bet you wouldn't have a problem with that? In fact the Intermediate championship is named after IRA volunteers. I am not saying I have a problem with that myself but it is important to point out your hypocrisy. Do you support violence or not? Make up your minds.

I am not convinced having Gallagher back would make a difference, people have short memories, his last big Croke Park games were a hammering against Dublin in Division 2 final and a poor performance against Galway. He had his chance in 2022.

I'd agree with a lot of this and have said similar before.
In this case it is alleged violence, no findings of guilt. There are many instances in the gaa of convicted players, management etc being involved in the organisation.
If we're making an example of someone now, it needs to be at HQ level with a set of regs as to who is and who is not eligible to be involved. Maybe that already exists?

Some people saying MOR would solve the problem, and I dont think there'd be many complaints if he got the role. But it just doesn't seem like he's interested. He'd know the players well and he's used to the Derry setup in terms of league/championship, he's a proven intercounty manager too and ticks all the boxes. But if he's not interested, there's nothing can be done about that.

In purely footballing terms RG is the best manager Derry have had in a very long time. In purely footballing terms, and not to be hypocritical about who can or should be involved with the county team, I'd have no issue with him being appointed. I agree though, having RG back is no guarantee of anything - Derry might have missed their opportunity.

Personally I'm not going to judge anyone without factually knowing details - and the only details I know are what was reported by the press. Not enough there to say with any certainty what did or did not happen in my opinion. But I appreciate others are led more by social media and word on the street. I just don't buy into the online "experts" who "know".

I've said before too, if guilty of the alleged claims, then prison is where he should be.

It still amazes me that so many people have him down as guilty or have known about him for years.

If those same people knew he was committing abuse for years why didn't they go to the police?

I think the moderator needs to look at the some of these comments as many are saying a man is guilty of something whereas there is no public record of that.

Media will be very careful about what they say if he's reappointed too.

Once again, anyone guilty of the alleged crimes should be in prison.

Quote from: Ethan Tremblay on August 14, 2024, 11:41:24 AMThat appointment would spell disaster for all concerned, again sponsorship and other revenue generating avenues could set the county back years if they react negativly.

Players will be boxed into corners by the media for their personal take, which is unfair on them also.

Would he even bring anything new to the table if he was to come back? His return certainly wouldn't have the impact McGuniness has had with Donegal.

Ultimately, as mentioned above by Lough Neagh, if he does not win an All Ireland (going off previous management must be the expectation), which I personally don't see happening , then the country board have thrown ethical values in the bin for a chance of success.

Gallagher improved Derry a lot more than McGuinness did Donegal. What McGuinness achieved this year had been achieved the previous 2 years by RG.Would he bring anything new? Probably. He did every year he was in charge. Would we have lost 4 championship games if he was in charge? Not a chance.

I don't think it's AI or nothing for Derry fans. We've won one in our history. We do want the team to be competitive though and be in with a chance.

Agreed.
RG was able to get the best out of the players we have.
Harte/Devlin were not.
If we are getting the best we can from the players we have and are competitive, I don't believe there'll be outrage if we don't win an AI. No-one I spoke to in the last few years "expected" to win anything, not even Ulster. But we had a chance, and that was/is enough for the majority of us. Of course we want to win an AI, but there are no expectations, just hope.

I've said on here many times my opinion of the RG situation so I'm not going into it all again - but to summarise, anyone guilty of domestic abuse should be in prison. But guilt should be determined by the authorities and not the online jury.

I have a question though, and honestly don't know the answer - was there widespread criticism/protest/sponsor issues when RG became involved in a club team?

Some people had their mind made up about RG the second a complaint was made, and they'll never change their mind no matter what comes out in the wash.

The west is complicit.
If Saddam or the Taliban had been doing this the US and their UK lapdogs would be in all guns blazing to remove that regime.
Its shameful.

Quote from: Gael-in-exile on August 09, 2024, 12:59:21 PMI've seen a few county boards struggle to provide 'jeopardy' in their championship when trying to marry it with a suitable amount of games for the players.
I'm not sure I have seen a county get it perfectly right yet...... and thus the reason why simple knock out in Tyrone is still lauded possibly

Tyrone league is running flat out at the minute with most teams playing 2 league games a week.
I know they play starred games during the county season. From what I can make out, this means most teams have all their county players for the 2nd half of the league leading into championship. Downside is the volume of games over such a tight schedule.
