Isn't it strange -- when you're single, all you see is couples, and when you're part of a couple, all you see are dirty women.

Martin Mc Guinness was a real statesman today calling Irish republicans who shot the policeman today as " traitors to the island of Ireland".

What exactly did he mean considering that he was leader of an organisation who spent the best part of 30 years doing the same thing. In fact I think that the organisation did not confine themselves to members of the security forces. A good few innocent Irish men lost their lives during Martin's reign.

It really was amusing but it is not funny given the circumstances to hear this man line and stand up shoulder to shoulder to men that he would have had murdered only a few years ago.

Classic 360 degree turn around. Anything goes now.

evolution and progress, wonderful things...
you should try them

unfortunately the days of a flights accommodation and a job are long gone in New York for anything but the county level player. In fact in New york a number of clubs are not fielding teams this year. However the definition of "too high level" is unlikely- if you play senior championship you'll have no bother playing in NYC.

I'd like to ask a stupid question...

what is the difference between a cira operative today attacking what he perceives to be a legitimate target in his armed struggle to remove british rule from ireland and pira operative in 1980 attacking what he perceives to be a legitimate target in his armed struggle to remove british rule from ireland ?

I'd imagine the difference is in what the consensus is the the republican and nationalist community as a whole regards as "a legitimate target".

A long time ago there was a view held that the Provisionals were trying to improve the situation of a community and there was a certain degree of complicity of that community in the actions that the Provisionals carried out. In many ways the leadership of the Provisionals and implicitly Adams and McGuinness were able to move the community's view of a legitimate target from any soldier/policeman towards strategic economic targets e.g. Baltic exchange/ canary wharf and away from the human targets. The next step was to convince their supporters that the best move was actually towards a peaceful solution. Many politicians would do well to heed their success.

My view is now that the consensus of opinion in the republican and nationalist community is now a reflection of the Provisional leadership i.e. that there is no such thing as a legitimate target and that the ballot box is the only way to advance their objectives. Of course this is only an opinion and it is quite apparent that there is a huge disparity of views on this subject as evidenced by the board's own forums.

So the difference in the view of those "operatives" is probably small, other than his/her awareness of the views of the communities that they claim to represent and how much they reflect those views.

Never underestimate the power of stupidity, having been caught at every attempt to remotely cause mayhem due to infiltration and ineptness, they have resorted to the only means available and under their control. They have taken a gun and in cold blood "proven their commitment to a cause" and in so doing tried to push the people of the north back at least 15 years and into a time of conflict and hatred.

It is up to every one of us to push back against the idiots and reinforce the idea that these clowns are not going to be welcomed in communities, that they will not be given our protection and they do not have our support. This is not the way forward but backward, not the road to freedom, but to pain and suffering and containment and isolation and fear.

A huge investment conference last year was reaping rewards, despite the state of the economy globally, a lot of effort by a lot of people (and surprisingly a few politicians) were about to culminate in the creation of thousands of high paying jobs.
Really?  :-\

Really, and having been involved personally it looks like the hearts and minds battle has been lost in one evening. Obviously that pales into insignificance compared to the loss of lives but there had been a lot of time effort and money pushing that particular adventure.

And Ros, (despite the appeals to their voters) I was shocked and surprised at the efforts and joint ventures undertaken by some of the politicians that I had slated for being worse than useless.

So after 10 years of trying it looked as if some progress was being made by Belfast. A huge investment conference last year was reaping rewards, despite the state of the economy globally, a lot of effort by a lot of people (and surprisingly a few politicians) were about to culminate in the creation of thousands of high paying jobs. One of the legacy of the troubles, thousands of well educated yet underpaid young people was about to become a big attraction for that small number of international firms actually expanding.

Yet along come three weak minded fools who have been told that the killing of 2 soldiers preparing to go to Afghanistan is a blow for the cause. Genius.

We are now left in the situation where the daily lives of those who live in the north will be hugely affected by the decision of a number of loyalists as to whether they should react to this act of unmitigated stupidity. One move and the spiral begins again.

And so it comes to this, we are faced with the British, Irish and European governments having to increase security spending in the north at a time that it cannot be afforded. All this at the cost of money for health, education and infrastructure. This murder of another couple of kids whose economic disadvantage has led them to be preparing to fight in a conflict they don't understand by a couple of kids whose economic disadvantage has led them to be preparing to fight in a conflict they don't understand.
