Title: Johnny Doyle announces his retirement
Post by: Donnellys Hollow on April 06, 2014, 06:30:43 PM
Started every championship game since making his debut against Louth in 2000. 67 consecutive championship starts. Scored in 50 consecutive championship games between 2001 and 2011.

The best forward we have produced since the 1920s. It's going to be strange watching a Kildare team without him.

Brilliant record. Great warrior, great skill, never a mean hit, never a complaint.

Why, Johnny, why? Thought he was carrying on for another year?

An all-time great player and a gent off the field to boot.

Pure class, in every respect. Best to Johnny, the epitome of a well earned sporting retirement.

Wonderful player. Always enjoyed watching him. One of those lads who "deserved an All Ireland" but unfortunately was in the wrong county at the wrong time.

Odd timing. Is he injured or what made him decide on this.

Strange timing alright but what a player.

One of the great players. He doesn't owe Kildare anything.

Brilliant record. Great warrior, great skill, never a mean hit, never a complaint.

You obviously haven't seen him n too many games. Well able to give a dig and did so! Fine player and leaves Kildare with a large gap in their forwards to fill. Don't know why he committed for the year and then packs it in today??

He has twin babies and he is obviously as committed to been a father as he was Kildare footballer. Joins Glenn Ryan and Dermot Earley as another great Kildare player never to win an All-Ireland.

Played 154 times for Kildare only 4 times as a sub. Legend!!!

Pity we won't see anymore of him, but I suppose all these greats have to end sometime. Pity he never got that All-Ireland medal though. Owes Kildare nothing as somebody above mentioned.

Shite player. Never wun nuffin'.

In all seriousness, he's a perfect example that success is not measured in medals. Never gave up, he mightn't have scored the most or the most spectacular but on every given day he was always at the coal-face, even in the face of defeat. That's a quality that outweighs all others.

Fair play to Johnny. Great player. He will make a great manager.

Pity the sports news this morning didn't give him a mention.

Unfortunate to have soldiered for one of the weaker counties. He was a quality forward, reliable without being flamboyant. He had a great vision and timing. Always seemed to find space, when no one else could, to pop over a point.

Farewell johnny and best wishes on your retirement.
You had a good long innings above and beyond the call of duty.
Yet another wonderful player to prove that you don't need a drawer full of medals to show you're good.
Anyway players only win medals if they're surrounded by enough of other good players.

Maybe if he had been around in 98 it might have worked out.
A great player and an inspiration to a lot of Kildare kids. It's not always about winning.

Great player, a player Kildare could always rely on for scores. At 37 not a big surprise though, I thought he might have retired last year.

A great player and a gentleman.

He'll be remembered as one of the elite of the game who would have got on to any team but who unfortunately never won an All-Ireland medal.

Best of luck for his retirement.

The catch he made from the last kick-out against Down in 2010 summed him up.
Surrounded by bigger, stronger, younger men, he soared above them all to win the ball that very nearly ended up in the net with the last kick of the game.

So something good did come out of our trip to Newbridge yesterday so, got to see him in the flesh one last time. Pity that free didn't go over. Game that sticks out for me is the run around he gave us in 05, impossible to tie down.

Some player. Got better with age. Seemed to possess every skill needed.

Should've been moved into Corner forward v Dublin in 2011 when Dublin had a debutant in the corner and 14 men - could've all been different.

Why wouldn't his marker have just followed him?

You'd still have a good corner forward playing in a position he's comfortable in, with either a rookie or a fella less comfortable in there marking him.

The great man kicked 3 points off the bench for the Kildare Junior Team tonight. He will grace Croke Park again in the Leinster Junior Final in a few weeks time.

Legend. No harm having a man like that around, he was only a sub, the starting forward line were all young bucks. Excited to see Jack Robinson back in the white himself and Nash scored 1-7 between them, some serious forward talent in Kildare at the moment.
