GAA Discussion / God to be Fermanagh's miracle?
November 16, 2011, 07:03:10 PM
It is rumoured that former Tyrone star Peter Canavan is the leading contender in the race to become the next Fermanagh County manager. The Errigal Ciaran man recently completed a three year stint with his home club and it appears he is now ready to take on the challenge with a move to inter county management. Fermanagh would be Peter's first venture into the inter county scene and he would hope to reverse their recent decline which has seen them drop to the lower reaches of the National League while also performing dismally in the Ulster Championship and The All Ireland qualifiers.

It was no secret that the Fermanagh senior team endured a rather turgid year throughout 2011 with stories of player dissatisfaction and at times open revolt against the management. To appoint a manager with Canavan's profile would be a huge coup for the Erne County and would surely be seen as a positive move by all those involved with Fermanagh football.

It is widely believed that if Canavan is the successful candidate he will bring Fermanagh native Kieran Donnelly and former Tyrone county Board Coaching Officer Enda Kilpatrick with him as part of his backroom team. Donnelly, a teacher in Omagh CBS is a well respected coach and was the Errigal Ciaran trainer during Canavan's time as their club manager while Kilpatrick has a long record and association with Vocational Schools and youth coaching within the O'Neill County.
It is believed that interviews for the post are due to take place within the next forty eight hours.

So many to thank: ONeill, Hardstation, Orangeman, AZOffaly, youse been brilliant. Really kept me going. When I wanted to get a good night's sleep. there you were, willing back for some late night posting.

Puckoon, Gabriel_Hurl, carmen stateside, what can I say? You've taken my words of wisdom and shared them with our North American neighbours.

Downgirl, Tyronegirl and Rois. I've loved you all and in very different ways.

The people I've over the years: TyroneLass, Maggie, Leenie, Bensar, heganboy, Take Your Points, sandwiches_in_the_boot, redcard, ExcellentDriver, Norf Tyrone and Fionntamhnach.

Hello
#56
A former GAA county star who lost the use of his legs in a workplace accident has kept up his sporting life thanks to a gift from his local community in Lisnaskea, and now Cormac McAdam wants to help others with spinal cord injuries.
The Lisnaskea man and an experienced plastering contractor was 37 when he fell from a customer's roof while plastering a chimney five years ago.

His ladder slipped and Cormac fell 40 feet to the ground, leaving the gaelic footballer with multiple injuries, including five broken bones in his back, a damaged spinal cord, punctured lungs, eight broken ribs and a broken thumb.

The father-of-three has been paralysed from the chest down because of the injury to his spinal column, but says he has not accepted that he will never walk again.

"My life changed in February 2006 and it's very hard to take in that you might never walk again.

"I don't think you do take it in. I definitely think I will get back on my feet someday - that's the thing that keeps people with spinal cord injuries going.

"If you didn't you can fall into a very dark hole."

'The Keady Cat' captained Fermanagh for 13 years and as his gaelic career was coming to a close, Cormac took up a different sport.

"Golf gives you something to do. I kept playing club football for Lisnaskea Emmetts and got involved also at Clones Golf Club.

"After the accident, the turning point for me was the load of support I got from the GAA and Clones golf club.

"They run fundraising events put the money together and bought me this buggy."

Cormac uses a specially adapted van to drive himself to the golf club and his motorised buggy takes him around the course easily. But the 42-year-old said there is no such thing as a quick game of golf anymore.

"Before the accident someone would ring me up an hour before and ask if you want to play a round of golf. Now it's a day's notice I need to make sure the buggy's charged for the game."

Cormac wants to use his experience to help others who have severe back injuries and he hopes one specific charity could help him get back on his feet.

"Six to eight people a day across the UK and Republic of Ireland will end up in wheelchairs because of spinal cord injuries.

"That means this time tomorrow, someone will be getting the dreadful news that I got and I would like to think that there's help there for them. Spinal Research is a very small charity, and the research they do is very important.

"You just keep going and hoping someday I'll get a little movement back."

I'm off to the golf course guys!

GAA Discussion / The Joe Brolly Drinking game
May 31, 2011, 05:55:35 PM
Saw this on Facebook  :D

Championship 2011 is fast approaching, so in honour of Gaelic games' finest pundit, we bring to you, the JOE BROLLY DRINKING (SUNDAY) GAME!

To play you must have 1) Beer and 2) any spirit of your choice.

These are the rules. The game must be played while Joe Brolly is a pundit and can be played for either live matches or on The Sunday Game highlights programme. Suggestions for rules are more than welcome - just write them on the wall!

Whatever side of his body his limp, poorly-knotted tie is pointing to - that's the hand you drink with. No tie - drink with your weaker hand.

Rules for the beer:

Flying Without Wings - when Joe's hands are in the air or moving around when he explains something, drink your beer til he stops

Drink While He Thinks - drink your beer whenever Brolly goes silent when he thinks of something to say mid-sentence - the longer he's silent, the longer you drink.

Bonus shot: whenever a pundit jumps in to say something, and Joe cuts them off so he can continue his own sentence, take a shot.

Rules for the spirits:

Each time he blocks the cameras view of his face with his hands - 1 shot

He says "an I'll tell ye another thing" - 1 shot

Each time he interrupts another pundit - 1 shot

Each time he interrupts Des Cahill/Michael Lyster - 2 shots

Northern rules (on matches involving Ulster teams vs. a team from the other provinces):

Slagging Southern football - 2 fingers

Defending Northern team from pundits' criticism - 2 fingers

Tipping Northern team for All-Ireland - 1 shot

Calling Tyrone the team of the decade (2000s) - finish your drinks

Pat Spillane rules:

If he slags off Pat Spillane when he's not there - 2 fingers of beer

If he slags off Pat Spillane when he IS there - 4 fingers and a shot

General discussion / My Way Access
May 11, 2011, 01:18:46 AM
I hope this isn't looked at spamming, but here goes.

For the past wee while, I have been working hard on getting a wee project off the ground. It's now up and running, but in it's early stages.

I have set up a website for disabled people. On the site, it will list all public buildings and companies that people can use, plus a wee review about how good it is for disabled people. Whether that be the access, the parking facilities, the co-operation of the staff, etc..

Visitors can then register to the website and leave their own feedback regarding these businesses and rate the businesses on a variety of different topics.

If there is a business that hasn't been listed, then the visitor can submit a business and their own review of the place. This will be monitored, so nothing goes live without my approval.

So if you're disabled, have friends or family members that are disabled, point them in the direction of my website.
