Whatever about kiplings views, its a wonderful piece of writing. It has become overused however, and because of that seems cheesy now, which is a real pity.
At Wimbledon, the line 'If you can meet with triumph and disaster, and treat those two imposters just the same...' is above the door out onto centrecourt. The BBC coverage of the final had Nadal and Federer read alternate lines of the poem - it was very well done, and a bit of an anticlimax to switch over and see Sean Boylan reciting it in an ad. I have to say however, Seans rendition was better; Nadals halting english made me doubt if he knew what he was saying  :P

Also, in ladies football, you quite often see pile ups from people diving on the ball

This is the key point exactly. It sems noone really knew why there was a pick-up, many thought it was unneccessary and slowed the game, until that experiment a few years ago.
Pile ups galore, if the ball was on the ground and a few players were in close proximity, it was a gauranteed throw up. When there is a pick up, generally only 1 player can be in the appropriate position at any one time, so these pile ups are avoided.

It seems our fore fathers were smarter than we gave them credit for...

Bad for the game? O Neill, that judge may have been right after all with his comment about Tyrone people, if you're representative. How could a team playing 'the game' be bad for 'the game'? 'The game' isnt a static entity, 'the game' is what happens every sunday, and evolves and changes over time. 'The game' being made illegal, would be bad for 'the game'. 'The game' not evolving would be bad for 'the game'. Society losing interest in 'the game' would be bad for 'the game'.

Theres no such thing as puke football, or football thats good for 'the game' or football thats bad for 'the game', it all is; 'the game'.

And as for the fermanagh folk? It seems strange to give out about being seen as plucky wee fermanagh, and then making sure to include all the reasons for said attitude, presumably to pluck at the heartstrings.

I see Brollys quote about being an awful team to watch, and awful to play against is being regurgitated. I know that this year when I've been watching fermanagh I've found the games great to watch. I couldnt care what neutrals think. I've never went to a game hoping fermanagh play well, I go hoping they'll win. And as for awful team to play against? Take Kerry, for eg. Would they be a good team to play against, or an awful team to play against? I suspect the latter. The statement sounds good, but doesnt actually mean anything. Pity so many just latch on to meaningless soundbytes.

If fermanagh had not being prominent in the championship for the last number of years, there would be no mention of anything negative about them. In 04, Fermanagh werent playing with gay abandon, they were playing quite similarly to how they are now. Because that was their first big outing, it was sacrilegous to slate them. Now its different. That this thread was started is a surer sign than any yet that perhaps Fermanagh have finally arrived.

I knew we'd beat Monaghan, I was sure of a tight game against Derry, but not the result, but I'm confident of landing the 'Celt now. I've been really impressed by Armagh, I think they have the potential to be better than any Armagh team over the last decade, but I think the occasion will drive Fermanagh on. Do or die - 'next year' for the 1982 team never came, could well be the same for this one.

Wtf? This must be a record no of posts on this thread in 1 day! We fermanagh folk really have come out of our shells!

Agree Impartial Reporter is better for quality (its far and away the best local paper I've seen, although admittedly thats not too many), but think the Herald is still decent enough. I think we're lucky to have 2 such papers serving us. Bradley can be cringeworthy enough tho this week wasn't too bad.

The club competition is a good idea, its a decent attempt to keep every one happy, never an easy thing to do. Certainly it throws up some new games, and even if there are uneven matches, teams like Coa will relish the chance to play against Div 1 teams.
Good decision by the county board, regains some of the respect I lost watching Cartys interview on telly
'...we're a good team, derry are a good team, we beat derry, that means we're a better team...'

PS I predict defeats for young Mc Cabe, in both the UEFA Cup (by some team from a country with a population of 193) and the Ulster Final, by Armagh of course ;D

Sure what difference - its meaningless anyway... :P

Fearon, by implication you're suggesting that teams are going out with an ambivalent attitude towards their provincial titles. To take Ulster for example; that derry were beaten basically because they knew they were still in the AI, and so put in less effort.

Why, then, bother to enter a draw for tickets to a game you believe is meaningless, esp when it means you might miss the start of Neil Young??

Yes, a good move.  But anything else would have been pretty bad PR for them.

Think you're holding back on a bit of credit there. The most important PR for any team is with their fans, a typical glens fan would, I imagine, be entitled to feel that he should be playing for them when hes contracted, even moreso if they were to watch any of the games and see the treatment he has got from outplayed defenders (take a particular bow, McQuaid). They would be right to feel aggrieved if he got injured playing for fermanagh.
Is it maybe the case that the Glens are expecting to win this match anyway, so his loss isnt that important? Just curious...

I would say the offences are probably about even. Agree that a cold punch off the ball is worse than swinging 'in the heat of the moment' but its hard to start distinguishing the events surrounding an incident.
Galvins offence was aimed at a referee though, and so deserves stricter sanctions, imo it should be about equivalent to cold punching someone.
A lot of people have taken delight in Galvins demise, while I agree he certainly deserves a pretty hefty punishment, I enjoy watching him play for his intensity. He has been the player who has being most responsible for bringing Kerry up to speed when they were rattled in the early 00's. Silky skills are no longer enough.

Oh no, Gerry's in no way to blame. The fault lies completely with the f**ker. I just meant, that fella won't be happy with him.

Same time, he could have kept his mouth shut. :D

You're not the home wrecker, she is. Taking advantage of the poor man. Seriously, deny everything.
#3029
I concur. Someone will remember. Best thing to do Gerry would be to say to him as soon as he gets back that one of the other ones told you about it, but you think you managed to cover it up ok for him  :P
