Not to labour the point- but i don't think that's what Sweeney is saying.

I never said that Sweeny was saying anything i simply stated that I had not read the book and had only read the extract.
My point was to answer the implication that excellent preparation and athleticism should somehow be less lauded than artistry and natural talent.

It is hard to make a comment on this as i have not read the book or the chapter in question. And only have sweeny's spin to guide me - something that should be treated with caution in my experience.
I have more respect for this Cork team than i have for other hurling teams knocking about over the past number of years for the very reason that they are not as naturally talented as other teams. It's the precise point that they have to work so hard to succeed that makes them a great team in my opinion.
IMO if other teams had their level of profesionalism they would have probably even been more successful. This Cork team made the absolute maximum of their ability which in my book is the greatest achievement that any team can have in sport.
I think it is too their eternal credit that they have managed to compete in four all ireland finals in a row (hope i'm right on that one) and their battles with Kilkenny over the years have been great IMO - i dont think either of these sides are better than the other - they just have different approaches. 3-2 in all irelands and 2-1 in head to heads hardly demonstrates that Kilkenny are so much more superior. If we took the last four all irelands it is 2-2.

GAA Discussion / Re: Drinking and the GAA

Total bans are not the answer IMO. Remember reading an article by an inter county player in one of the northern rags - the Sunday Life or Sunday World - who said that players were getting more and more pissed (not a pun) off with long term drink bans. From what I remember he argued that  going off the drink for long periods only made players more uptight and that as long as all players agreed on the lenght of the ban and stuck then there was no problem with having a few drinks when there was ban. Infact at the right time it helped players.

GAA Discussion / Re: Brolly and the GPA

Brolly is fairly shrewd behind the over the top persona. The GPA despite what they say seem to be totally money orientated. If they were that worried about plaer welfare then they should look into lobbying for an offseason. They are also spectatcuarly quiet on the eroding of the club that is going on at the minute - probably because any shortening of the inter county season would not serve their purpose

GAA Discussion / Re: Rory Gallagher, the new Cavan man

My point is that he chose not to play for Fermanagh in 2003 and 2004 and he had seemingly no falling out with any of the managers at that time?
I don't know his reasons for not playing in those years as i don't know the man but it does seem that he picks and chooses what years to commit Would he have came back to Fermanagh had they not had a successful year in 2004?
Look - i dont like all this emphasis on individuals although it does seem to be rife in discussion boards - this is nothing more than innuendo. As far as i'm concerned i wish him all the best and hope he can enjoy his football there.

GAA Discussion / Re: Mistakes that cost games:

That sort of lazy analysis annoys the hell out of me. Its like when somebody says that games are only won in the last ten minutes. What shite, some games are won in the first 15 minutes if you go far ahead.
It always makes me laugh that a forward who does not touch leather for 40 minutes and is hauled off escapes any blame where a player who has won plenty of ball and scored a point or two but misses one in the last minute can be vilified

As far as I know Rory did not play for Fermnaagh in 2003 or 2004. He played in 2002 and scored I think it was 3-9 against Monaghan but did not commit for the following two years. He came back in 2005 and although was top scorer in the league was dropped for the Ulster Championship against Armagh, people in the know would say that was a strange decision. he came back against Down in the qualifiers but was taken off. Apparantly he gave Mulgrew a volley of serious abuse and that burnt his bridges.
But you hear a lie and tell a lie. He was not rushing to ferm in either 2003 or 2004 though.

GAA Discussion / Motions to congress
November 10, 2006, 10:16:13 AM
This topic got a little bit of interest on the last board. Im going to try and put a few motions forward at my club AGM with the view to getting them passed and on to county convention. The general consensus from watching the views on this board is that most GAA people are annoyed about the club game.
Anyway is there any chance we could get a universal motion that we all put to our clubs and see what happens.
As far as I know you cannot change the rules this year - whho is the rules expert here so we know what were doing..lol
