Does Cowen have any Republican leanings?
Do any of the other possible candidates have any Republican leanings??

Dermot Ahern..

Was thinking of the "wee" county man, what about the others, Coughlan?
I know M Martin is a sliver from FG.

Cowen's father Ber, would have been old school Fianna Fáil. I know Cowen would be 'republican' with a small 'r', but I'm not sure if that's what you're asking. He would favour a 32 county republic idealogically, but I'm not sure what his economic standpoint on that would be. He's also unlikely to do anything not already specified in the GFA, in other words he would wait until there was a Nationalist/pro-reunification majority.

Ian Og Paisley on RTE now lamenting the loss of Bertie Ahern, a man that the DUP had an honourbale relationship with

Does that mean they all got a few pound out of it and that it was shared equally, thereby making him honuorable ???  ;D ;D ;D

Yeah I think he's announcing the date he intends to step down which should probably be sooner rather than later.

Personally I think it's a shame I thought he did a good job as Taoiseach but it seems that to be a good leader you also have to have your flaws as well a lá Haughey and Clinton.

The Grainne Carruth incident was the straw that broke the camel's back and his credibility was shot after that and when that goes you cannot lead a Country anymore!

You are right unfortunatly it will be seen as the Carruth incident. He did this all to himself when he lied and perjured himself. It should be remembered as 'the Ahern perjury incident' and not the 'Carruth incident'.

Will there be criminal charges then?

I havent voted FF in a while, but of all the main politicians in the country, Cowen is the one I'd be happiest to see getting a chance at the top.

Just a few scattered thoughts here; maybe they will strike a chord with others, I don't really know.
I don't like to see anyone being ousted in the way Bertie was- trial by public opinion is just a stop short of lynch law.
Personally, I could not see Bertie surviving the revelations coming from the Mahon Tribunal but I'd like to have seen the matter being decided there and not in the tabloid press.
The man says he's totally innocent and I find that hard to believe; the Birmingham Six said they were innocent also but Maggie Thatcher would have hanged the lot of them. Thank God she didn't have her way.
To be exonerated sixteen years later was small consolation for those involved but at least they were still around to get their freedom.

Public opinion in England at the time would have been behind Thatcher if the legal system didn't thwart her. There is no reprieve from a hanging.
Bertie's case stops a long way short of the B'ham Six but there is a central issue there as well. Many sincere and decent people will not agree with Bertie's alleged guilt and there is only alleged guilt there at present.
The spin off to his departure will continue on and on. This was no way to see him go.

I agree with you Lar - but in hindsight ( which is a wonderful thing ) he should have gone earlier - the pressure was unrelenting !
