General discussion / Missing person
December 16, 2015, 09:39:00 PM
Lads,

A local lad has been missing since Monday night. Him and his car hasn't been seen since. A lot of concern for him.

He car is a silver/blue shaded Toyota auris that had "Ted Brennan motors" on each side. Reg is 09 MN 6569.

Last seen in Castleblayney.

It's been widely reported on rte and on social media. Can I ask that people share this info and keep an eye for the car. And lead or help is badly needed.

Paddy is 35, with a heavy beard and slim build, about 6ft tall. A wife and young family waiting in news.

Picture and details in RTE report below.

Thanks

GAA Discussion / Jim Gavin - under-rated?
September 25, 2015, 03:49:50 PM
Read this piece on Jim Gavin and found it very insightful.

http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=244676

Would Jim Gavin be under-rated by many? In the light of the All-Ireland win, very little seems to be made of his role or how he has taken Dublin to another title despite not holding back during the year and winning 4 out of 4 trophies available.

He took risks during the year and got lots from players - Dublins midfield was suspect we where told but he put in Fenton and suddenly its no problem. He generally reads a game very well and gets his subs in at right time and with an impact.

He has done it with the U21's and now won repeat All-Irelands.

Yet he just seems to get on with it and isn't held in the same esteem as Horan was or McGuinness was or Harte, Fitzmaurice etc.

Perhaps its the expectation that comes with Dublin - the pick of players, resources available, etc. But they would always have these and have struggled in the past. He manages this very well and the players same to now thrive in pressure situations and have got better as the year has gone on. A lot will point to last year and the Donegal match that went very wrong. While that is true, you could say that poor finishing cost them as much as poor defensive set up. To his credit he has corrected this and they haven't looked as open all year.

Maybe history and when he is finished he will get the plaudits but its no mean feat to win All-Irelands and he has now won 3 of them as manager.

General discussion / That picture
September 02, 2015, 10:23:46 PM
I'm sure many have seen it and been honest I've seen it and have struggled to get imagine out of head (so won't be posting it).

But what a world we are living in. So much wrong and these people fleeing their own life's and risking so much, yet are viewed as such a plague on modern Europe.

It's a picture that I hope results in change.

And what can we do to make change happen? I don't really know either.

General discussion / GAA health week
June 18, 2015, 11:20:03 PM
Wasn't sure where to put this, here will do well.

As some may have noticed, it's GAA health and well being week. Today they focused on cancer. This link is an article that a very good friend wrote and he lays his experience bear to encourage others to get checked and not avoid it.

I remember the time well and none of us really knew how to handle it or what he was going through.

The article speaks for itself.

GAA Discussion / Feile Peil 2015
June 18, 2015, 05:19:18 PM
Surprised this hasn't been started yet.

We are back in this after a 10 year break  ;)

Playing in Division 3 with Host club An Tochar from Roundwood in Wicklow and Ferns, Wexford and South London (who walked Div 4 last year).

We'd have a decent team but the South London team are traditionally very physical and pacey, which mightn't suit our lads. One of the players won the All-Ireland skills competition last weekend, so its a good start if nothing else.

Last time we where in it, I was involved with the team and it was hectic. Looking forward to a more relaxing trip this time but the preparation, build up has been fairly busy.

GAA Discussion / Club championship shambles..again
October 10, 2014, 11:05:43 AM
Was reading that two counties won't have their club championship finished in time to have a representative in the provincial championship - football in Wexford and Tipperary.

While Tipp may have an excuse with the Hurlers going to an All-Ireland replay, can't see how Wexford are in that position even as a dual county.

It continually boils back to the same problem where counties try to run off their championship in a limited window once all county activity is finished.

I'm sure Croke Park will be getting stuck in to sort this out once and for all  ::)

General discussion / Ebola
October 06, 2014, 06:16:01 PM
Can't see a topic on this but this shit seems to be getting real.

By all accounts its out of control in those 3 three African countries. Its in the states where some punter was at large for days before he fell ill and now a nurse in Madrid has it from treating a medical aid working who was returned from there.

How worried should we be getting?

Is this going to go Walking dead/28 days/shaun of the dead?

Is this going to be the black death of our age?

GAA Discussion / GAA - The simple things
May 02, 2014, 09:46:08 AM
With the GAA and all the focus on Intercounty game and all that comes with it - professionalism, SKY, win at all costs, fixture messes, club V County, money etc etc - you can easily question what its all about. Can be a lot of negativity and a lot of it comes from within.

Then something comes along that reminds you why you put so much into it and why its important. That can be big events, like last years Hurling championship or smaller, more personal stories.

This week has been like that in my house.

The wee lad is 6, he is 7 in November, so he's been training with the Under 8's.

Tomorrow morning, he will be togging out for his first game. To say he is excited, is an understatement. Its just a challenge against another club but it also happens to be the wifes club, who his grand-da would have played with. He'll get a game as they'll split the groups up to play it along the Go games rules.

He knew from the start of the week about the game and hasn't stopped talking about it. The gear has been laid out since Tuesday evening. Among the gems are:
- Will we have to stay after training on Thursday to do extra practice before the match.
- Will it be on telly? When I told him "No", Will it be at least on twitter and facebook?
- Will there be a scoreboard?
- Will you make sure we aren't late, Daddy, you are always a bit late and I want to practice before the match starts.
- Will there be seats for Nanny and Mac(as he calls one of his grandda's) & Nanny & Grandda?

Then after Hurling training on Wednesday, he came home to tell me that "Clontibret are no good Daddy and their goalkeeper is useless". I laughed and told him he doesn't know that and it will be a good game and who told him that. He said one of the other boys watched them play before and told us.

The innocent of the youth.

Good times  :D

Lads, have a look at the website http://www.charitygaamatch.com/

The match is taking place this Monday in Portlaois. All the players are cancer survivors. Micko and Brian Cody are managing the teams on the day with proceeds for St Lukes and St James Hospitals.

A very good friend of mine, Jason Hughes, is taking part and any support would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

General discussion / European City break
November 19, 2013, 09:30:05 AM
This has probably been done elsewhere but could anyone recommend a location in European to spend 4/5 days next April. A city break or even take in a couple of places ie fly into A and fly home from B.

Places mentioned so far - Prague, Stockholm, Croatia, Berlin, Budapest, Copenhagen or maybe even a few days in the sun somewhere.

Any pointers much appreciated. Kids not travelling by the way.

General discussion / Irelands Nicest place
October 11, 2013, 01:52:39 PM
Following from the Grimmest place thread, how about some credit to ourselves.

Westport would have to be my place of choice. Lovely wee town, well kept, great pubs, restaurants and plenty to do in the area.

Dingle would be similar and some lovely wee spots in Kerry and Cork to totally get away from it all.

GAA Discussion / Club V County Management
October 02, 2013, 03:55:08 PM
In the current climate, which is the harder task, without doubt the County manager will carry more profile and therefore face more media attention, pressure to perform and cricticism on many fronts. But against that he will have many advantages - more resources, a relatively predictable season of fixtures, committed group of motivated players at generally a high skill level, motivated players, etc.

Club management is a different matter. The season is so long and the fixtures are often unknown from one month to another. You may rarely see your better players if they play county. You are dealing with a different level of player and a limited pool of players. Resources are limited but expectations are high from players and supporters. Facilities may not be available or are on shared basis. Players pulled between between teams and codes.

In the modern game is Club management much more difficult than County Management? And are many managers (recent ex-county players) now bypassing club management and going straight into intercounty management roles  - selectors, U21, senior etc. Some much to learn at club level are they bypassing an essential part of the learning curve?

General discussion / Croatia V Serbia
March 22, 2013, 10:21:05 AM
This evening sees the first game between Croatia and Serbia in the World Cup qualifiers since the Balkans conflict. Its sure to be a toxic affair and huge efforts have been made between the sides to calm tensions before it.

What makes it even more interesting is the history between the two managers, no love lost there but it appears they have recognised the potential for trouble and have extended the olive branch to each other for the sake of getting the game played and move on.

Very good article here about the two of them http://www.wsc.co.uk/forum-index/27-football/777492-a-history-of-hate-cro-vs-srb-22-mar-2013

Much more than about football this one.

The balkan war largely bypassed me, was only out of school at the time, moved to Dublin for college, didn't have/need a TV and was living the good life, the outside world was off little relevance or importance. But from reading of it since, its very hard to fathom the reasoning behind it bar the usual reasons - nationalities, religion, sense of superority etc

Edit to say that the ref appointed is Nani's friend from Old Trafford  ;)

I didn't hear this last night but seen some twitter activity last night about it. Basically saying they don't deserve their grants.

http://www.thescore.ie/jerry-kiernan-critical-gaa-players-scheme-payment-796487-Feb2013/

FORMER IRISH ATHLETE Jerry Kiernan believes GAA players do not train hard enough to warrant grants.

It was announced yesterday that the Irish Sports Council and the GAA were renewing their agreement for the next two years meaning €900,000 will be made available for inter-county players to receive payments of around €400-per-year.

Kiernan, who represented Ireland in the marathon at the 1984 Olympics Games and regularly appears as an athletics analyst on RTE Sport, is opposed to the scheme, however – suggesting there is too much emphasis put on the GAA.

Speaking on Off The Ball last night, Kiernan said: "I think that the GAA are the richest sporting organisation in the country and should be well able to look after themselves.

I watch some of the games occasionally but I don't particularly like the GAA. I don't like football in particular. I don't think there's much to it, but I watched bits of the national league games over the weekend and what struck me was how unfit players were.
"An athlete I coach, Joe Sweeney, training 120 mile-a-week for the last six months, ran a 30km road race in Holland last weekend and won the race. There was no mention of it on the national airwaves.

"We're giving so much prominence to a sport that I feel doesn't deserve it."

Kiernan added that the commitment to training made by athletes in other sports is not matched by those participating at inter-county level in football and hurling.

"I don't have a high opinion of their fitness or their commitment to fitness. I understand that it means an awful lot to people in the country and from an economic point of view when you've got thousands of people going to the games it means a lot to the country.

"If this money, and it's only a small amount, wasn't given to them, would it dilute the attendances at the championships? I don't think so."

I believe that the GAA people live in a cloistered world, don't think beyond what they do and they tell themselves that they're training hard.
"I always notice as well when they're commenting on things they often talk about the sacrifices they make. You'll never hear that among athletes, boxers, swimmers or people who do international running."

"If there is a finite amount of money involved I would only give it to people who are competing internationally."

General discussion / Kerry Drink Driving Permit
January 22, 2013, 10:55:31 AM
http://www.rte.ie/news/2013/0122/363832-kerry-council-rural-vote/

Is this man for real? A permit system to allow designated drivers to drink drive in certain locations etc etc.

Interesting to note that councillors who voted for it where publicans. But this didn't influence their decision making according to Healy-Rae.  ;D

GAA Discussion / Goalpost supplier
January 11, 2013, 12:21:18 PM
Lads,

Anyone know or could point me in direction of supplier for full set of GAA Goalposts (Intercounty standard). Have a few names for ones down the country but haven't came across any of any in north and midlands.

Also, anyone know off hand the price range. DM me if you wish.

Any help much appreciated.
