GAA Discussion / Run for Adam Burke, 30 September

QuoteThe dream is alive - run for Adam Burke
Thursday, September 21, 2017

By John Harrington

On Saturday, September 30th, Two Mile House GAA Club in Kildare will host a special fund-raising initiative for 21-year-old Adam Burke who suffered a devastating stroke playing for the club's football team in 2016.

Adam, a very talented forward who scored 2-2 from play in Two Mile House's All-Ireland Club Junior Championship Final victory in Croke Park in 2014, collapsed on the pitch in the second half of a club-game in July last year.

Watching from the sideline, his father Willie immediately knew his son was in terrible trouble.

"I just saw him getting a crunching tackle into his chest," said Willie in an interview with RTE Radio 1's Cormac O'hEadhra last month.

"He was attended to on the ground, thankfully he got up but didn't take much part in the next few minutes (of the game) because it was coming up to half time.

"He came out in the second half and drifted his man over near us and our eyes met and I could just tell something was wrong, he was grey in the face.

"I don't know why I was tracking him, suddenly I just saw him out in midfield and he put his hand up to his head and then just fell gentle as you like onto the ground.

"I jumped over the fence and ran into him and took him by the hand and I could tell he was in terrible trouble."

Adam's brain was swelling and he needed a life-saving operation at Beaumont hospital to remove his skull-cap and allow his brain to swell naturally.

"We were given the news at that point that he had a 20% chance of living and if he did live that the chances of us communicating, walking, talking or interacting with us were very slim," his mother Catherine told Cormac O'hEadhra.

"I just prayed and wished he would come back to us, the whole family have gone through the mill and suffered but not as much as Adam has suffered.

"He was in a coma for two weeks. He was very sick when he came out of the coma. He gave us great hope after three days, he put his big left hand out around our necks and gave us a hug.

"He recognised us but his right side was paralysed but it gave us great hope and through those dark days a light was beginning to shine a little bit."

The Two Mile House team that won the 2014 AIB All-Ireland Club Junior Championship. Adam Burke is seated at the front of the picture on the left-hand side.

The stroke left Adam with a number of extremely challenging injuries.

He suffered paralysis of his right arm and hand, weakness of his right leg, increased fatigue, and also damage to the part of the brain that controls language and speech.

Adam spent three months in Beaumont Hospital engaging in a gruelling multi-disciplinary rehabilitation before beginning a further three-month intensive rehabilitation programme at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire.

Through hard work and with the help of his therapists, Adam has made great progress and has gone from being bed and wheelchair-bound to walking again.

He still has a long way to go though, and the intensive and specialised neurological rehabilitation he needs during this crucial early stage will cost a lot of money.

It is estimated that the total cost of Adam's future rehabilitation including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy along with life adaptations will be in excess of one million euro.

"The therapy he needs is very expensive," said his father Willie.

"He's a growing young man, his brain is able to find new paths and new ways and that's what the funding is really for."

As part of their fund-raising initiatives, the Burke family and Two Mile House GAA Club are hosting a family day of fun on September 30th that includes 5k and 10k fun-runs.

Tickets are €25 and include a t-shirt and entry to the BBQ that evening. The BBQ will be followed by a celebrity GAA Panel hosted by Marty Morrissey with special guests Davy Fitzgerald, Joe Brolly, Michael Duignan and Tomás Ó Sé.

Tickets for the event can be purchased here, but if you cannot make the walk/run and would still like to make a donation you can do so here.

So these two great stalwarts of Leinster football will duke it out next weekend in the senior championship and the minor championship. What a time to be alive!

Started every championship game since making his debut against Louth in 2000. 67 consecutive championship starts. Scored in 50 consecutive championship games between 2001 and 2011.

The best forward we have produced since the 1920s. It's going to be strange watching a Kildare team without him.

QuoteMulvihill: Doctors duty-bound not to toe the line on new rules
Tuesday, January 29, 2013
Kildare senior football team doctor Danny Mulvihill will openly contravene the new sideline regulations this weekend.

By John Fogarty
GAA Correspondent
Mulvihill, chairman of the Gaelic Games Doctors Association (GGDA), said it would a dereliction of his duty as a GP to the team were he to sit in the stands.

According to the new rule, which comes into formal operation this weekend, only one medic is permitted on pitchside, with the obvious choice for most county teams being the physio.

However, when Kildare face Donegal in Saturday's Division One curtain-raiser at Croke Park Mulvihill insists he will be on the sideline.

"I'll be on the pitch and I have been on the pitch so far for all our games this year. It's my intention to be on the pitch along with the physio as a team."

As GGDA chairman, Mulvihill has received several emails and phone calls from GAA doctors voicing concern about the new directive after only learning of it in the press.

He also said physiotherapists are of the same mind and said some doctors would contemplating quitting GAA teams were the rule to be introduced permanently.

He has been given assurances by Croke Park that medics won't be prevented from carrying out their previous practices but hopes a compromise can be found.

"There is no way we would have agreed with it because we wouldn't be able to do our duty. We have a professional and ethical responsibility to look after players. This is interfering with our medical practice as it was established without any discussion or consultation.

"The physio is usually a younger person and does most of the running but the doctors are there straight away if there is anything that looks more serious.

"Most grounds have (team) seats behind the dugout but it's still not practical and there are walls. Some of them are six or seven rows up and our doctors would be taking a risk scampering down the steps to look at injuries. It's just not on.

"The physio and the doctor work as a team and track players who may be coming back from an injury or concussion. There's no way we can do that if we are separated."

Following Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Anthony Cunningham, Cork's Conor Counihan yesterday criticised the measure of cutting a team's sideline personnel to five, which was reinforced by GAA president Liam O'Neill last Saturday.

"Was there issues I wasn't aware of? Sideline bust-ups and that sort of thing? I hadn't see anything like that," said Counihan. "It certainly didn't happen at inter-county level. I would like someone to explain the rationale behind those. Maybe there is something I'm missing."

http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/mulvihill-doctors-duty-bound-not-to-toe-the-line-on-new-rules-221056.html

This has to be one of the most ridiculous rules ever introduced by the GAA. Only one medic per team allowed on the sideline? Surely teams should have both their physio and doctor on the sidelines with the games becoming so attritional nowadays and the increased risk of serious injuries.

Hurling Discussion / Kildare hurling in crisis

http://www.independent.ie/sport/hurling/kildare-hurling-plunged-into-crisis-after-management-quits-over-cuts-in-funding-3334449.html

There's great work being done by many clubs in Kildare to promote hurling but the county board have shown their true colours. €75,000 to try and run three inter-county panels is an utter insult to those who are proud to represent the county. Willie Sunderland was doing a fine job with a young panel but it looks like it will all be undone. Interesting to see how the players will react now.

Deja vu from 2008 for Kildare - Cavan followed by Limerick. I suppose there'll be a bit of speculation today over whether we can actually stage the game in the county. It would be nice from a Kildare point of view to have a championship match in Newbridge and it would be a shame if we had to travel to Portlaoise but probably likely to happen if the H&S crowd have their say.

Fantastic result for Laois against Dublin tonight. Don't think many would have seen that one coming.

Tipp and Cork was a very enjoyable game on TG4. This grade never seems to disappoint.

Kildare 1/10
Draw 12/1
Offaly 7/1

I can't recall when Kildare were as short a price for a Leinster Championship match. I don't think we were that short even when we played Carlow as reigning Leinster champions back in 2001.

Injuries are beginning to mount after a good run through the league. Callaghan had his operation in the States this week and is definitely out. Bolton, Lyons, Flynn, Chalky and Johnny are all carrying knocks but all should be ok come Sunday week. I'd say there'll only be one personnel change from the Tyrone match with Flynn replacing Leper and Mick Foley moving back to the edge of the square. McGeeney can often come out with an unexpected selection but apart from maybe Smith under pressure from young Fogarty it's hard to see many other changes. Is McNamee back for Offaly?

QuoteGAA player collapses during game

By Mortimer Murphy

Monday, October 24, 2011

TALENTED Annascaul and West Kerry GAA player Brendan O'Driscoll, 28, was removed to Cork University Hospital last night after collapsing in a club game.

Shocked teammates and opponents watched as O'Driscoll collapsed while playing for his club in the West Kerry Championship against Lispole yesterday. He fell to the ground 10 minutes into the second half while the ball was at the other end of the pitch.

Annascaul were leading 1-4 to 0-4 at the time, with O'Driscoll having contributed 1-1 and referee Peter Lyons immediately stopped the game. O'Driscoll received attention from his cousin and teammate, Gene Farrell, before a doctor arrived and after about 20 minutes he was rushed to Kerry General Hospital.

A spokesman for his club said it was feared that the player may have suffered a brain haemorrhage and described his condition as serious. O'Driscoll was later transferred to Cork University Hospital as his family, friends and teammates gathered around him.

O'Driscoll is also a talented soccer player and was capped by Irish Junior International manager Gerry Smyth three years ago, having played with both Lisselton Rovers and Camp United in the Kerry District League.

Hopefully he pulls through.

Hearing this morning that O'Rourke will no longer be a selector with Kildare next season.

I wouldn't be surprised if Anthony Rainbow joined the senior management now from the u21s with Tom Cribbin expected to replace Alan Barry as their manager.

GAA Discussion / New stadium for Dublin?
August 12, 2011, 03:43:21 PM
The GAA is believed to be considering building a third stadium in Dublin.

According to a report in today's Irish Daily Star, the Leinster Council is to carry out a feasibility study into building a 25,000-capacity stadium on a greenfield site at a cost of EUR100 million on the west side of the city.

With nearby provincial grounds such as Pairc Tailteann in Navan and St. Conleth's Park in Newbridge badly in need of upgrade work, the provincial body believes investing in a new stadium, which could act as a home ground for Dublin, Kildare, Meath, Louth and possibly Westmeath and Wicklow, may be a better option in the long run.

"We are aware of the situation in the north of the province," Leinster Council chairman Martin Skelly said.

"There are a number of grounds that would not be up to scratch under health and safety requirements and cannot meet the needs of paying customers in a modern-day context."

The Leinster Council's plan is certain to raise eyebrows, particularly in the current economic climate. A similar proposal by former GAA president Nickey Brennan to construct a multi-purpose stadium in Abbotstown, West Dublin was shot down in 2007.

GAA Discussion / 'The dreaded cruciate'
April 13, 2011, 01:34:07 PM
There appears to be a significant increase in these injuries in recent weeks. I know in Kildare we have four of our panel currently sidelined:

Peter Kelly - injured in the opening minutes of UCD's first O'Byrne Cup game
Ken Donnelly - ruptured his cruciate last May, made a few sporadic appearances during the summer and had surgery after Kildare were beaten
Mikey Conway - went off injured against Wicklow in 2009 and hasn't kicked a ball in anger since, supposedly close to a return
Dermot Earley - suffered a reoccurance last week while in recovery

Robert Kelly has made a full return this year after doing his cruciate in the league last season. With the recent news that both David Moran and Colm O'Neill will be ruled out for the year, there has been plenty of talk in the media about this particular injury. Are there any specific reasons why cruciate injuries seem to be happening more frequently?

- Are modern training methods contributing to the problem?
- Are the boots players are wearing an issue?
- Is it simply a case that this problem has always existed and it's just easier to diagnose nowadays?

There is an article in today's Examiner in which Johnny Doyle has suggested that sand-based pitches could be a contributing factor: http://www.examiner.ie/sport/gaa/doyle-links-cruciate-injury-rise-to-pitches-151256.html
